Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) Degree

Major in General Studies


(Major Code: 136)
(Major Code: 836 - Education option)

For the bachelor of general studies degree, students must choose either Option I or Option II for the General Studies Core (Discipline Area Emphasis) and take additional advanced hours (3000-4000 level) for a minimum of 36 hours at the advanced level. The General Studies Core and the Advanced Electives must have a grade of “C” or better. Some advanced course work is available online.

When choosing either Option I or Option II in the General Studies Core, students must take hours in a specific discipline area.

Notes for Option I and Option II:

  • An academic discipline area is designated by a course prefix, such as ENGL for English, POSC for political science, or BIOL for biology.
  • For a discipline area emphasis in music: MUAP (applied music), MUEN (music ensemble), MUSI (music), and MUMI (music industry) are all counted as one academic discipline.
  • For a discipline area emphasis in education: EDEC (early childhood), EDEL (elementary), EDPD (professional development), EDRD (reading), EDSE (secondary), EDSP (special education), EDT (technology), EPSY (psychology), or EDUC (education) are all counted as one academic discipline.

A maximum of 36 hours in one academic discipline may count toward this degree.

A maximum of 30 semester hours in business courses (ACCT, BUSI, CIDM, ECON, FIN, MGT, MKT), including 6 semester hours from the Core Curriculum, may count towards this degree.

Advanced Electives (24 SCH)


Students must take additional advanced electives as needed to total 36 hours of advanced work (3000-4000 level) from WTAMU.

General Electives (est. 42 SCH)


Students must complete additional electives to total a minimum of 120 hours.

Total hours required to complete degree: 120 hours


A student must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours, which includes at least 36 advanced hours taken at WTAMU.
