Major in Plant, Soil and Environmental Science

Admission Requirements:


  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in an agricultural or closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Master’s committee chair willing to supervise course work and/or thesis research project(s).
  • Domestic students
    • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  • International students (for all requirements see the International Students - Applicants webpage: http://wtamu.edu/student-support/international-applicants.aspx):
    • Official transcripts, mark sheets, graduation certificates, etc. (with certified English translations) from all colleges and universities attended.
    • Submit Foreign Credential Evaluation of foreign transcripts and documents.
    • Minimum test score: TOFEL (at least 79 iBT) or IELTS (at least 6.0).
  • Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 or at least 3.0 GPA on last 60 hours (4-point scale).
  • The Department of Agricultural Sciences has a secondary application process (“Application for Graduate Studies”) that will be sent to the student once they have applied to the University, sent official transcripts, and it has been determined that the student meets the minimum GPA requirements. The “Application for Graduate Studies” includes reference forms to be completed by three individuals knowledgeable about the applicant, and essay questions to be completed by the applicant. Also, the applicant must include an updated vita or resume.
  • Admission to the program is highly selective. Students interested in a master’s research assistantship are strongly encouraged to visit campus and meet with the faculty in their proposed academic study area.

Deadline for application: Fall semester - July 1st, spring semester - November 1st, summer sessions - April 1st.

NOTES:


  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required.
  • After all documentation has been evaluated, your application file will be forwarded to the appropriate faculty for review.
  • Decisions about whether the student is eligible for a graduate research assistantship are not made until all documentation has been evaluated by the Department of Agricultural Sciences and a faculty member accepts you for a M.S. degree program.
  • Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission or a graduate research assistantship in one of the graduate programs in Agricultural Sciences.
  • Applicants previously admitted who do not enroll in courses for either fall or spring semester must reapply to the University and must receive permission from the M.S. program for readmission.

Thesis Option (minimum of 30 credit hours)


  • At least 18 credit hours from 6000-level and above courses.
  • At least 18 credit hours in courses offered in the Department of Agricultural Sciences.
  • At least one credit hour of graduate seminar (up to three credit hours can be used toward degree requirements).
  • AGRI 6316 and AGRI 7318 or other courses with approval.
  • Six hours credit of thesis (AGRI 6301 and AGRI 6302).
  • No more than four credit hours from individual study courses.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive oral examination and research project(s) culminated by writing and defending a thesis.

Non-Thesis Option (minimum of 36 credit hours)


  • At least 18 credit hours from 6000-level and above courses.
  • At least 18 credit hours in courses offered in the Department of Agricultural Sciences.
  • At least one credit hour of graduate seminar.
  • AGRI 6316 or other courses with approval.
  • No more than six credit hours from individual study courses.
  • Successful completion of comprehensive and/or written examination.
