Engineering M.S.

Admission Requirements


  1. Undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in engineering or related STEM field
  2. Successful completion of Calculus II or higher level mathematics course
  3. Complete application to the Graduate School (https://www.wtamu.edu/academics/graduate-school/apply/index.html)
  4. Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions
  5. Letter of intent that describes the student career goals with completion of the program of study

Leveling Coursework


Leveling coursework may be required or recommended for students admitted without successful completion of Calculus II and students admitted without an undergraduate degree in engineering, dependent upon student stated goals for the program. All leveling courses will be determined in coordination with an adviser.

M.S. in Engineering Thesis Option (30 hours)


The thesis option requires a minimum of twenty-four (24) semester hours of approved courses and six (6) additional hours of thesis research credit, a successful defense of a research thesis, national or international presentation of work, and preparation of publication in a conference proceedings.

Area of Specialization (15 hours)


Take fifteen hours from one of the following areas (6000-level): Mechanical Engineering (MENG), Civil Engineering (CENG), Environmental Engineering (EVEG), Electrical Engineering (EENG), or multidisciplinary (by advisement). All 6000-level courses with a prefix of ENGR will count in any specialization or sub-specialization.

Sub-Specialization (6 hours)


Take six hours at the 6000 level from a second area of specialization: MENG, CENG, EVEG, EENG, or multi-disciplinary (by advisement).

Elective (3 hours)


Take any subject code by advisement.

Thesis (6 hours)


Take six hours of thesis research credits.

Further requirements:


Graduate courses from other STEM fields can be substituted as advised, but a minimum of 18 total hours of the degree must be engineering.

Non-Thesis Option (36 hours)


The non-thesis (project) option requires a minimum of thirty-six (36) semester hours of course work including a three-credit hour project course. The project course incorporates a written report and oral presentation to the Graduate Advisory Committee. This presentation will also serve as the comprehensive examination for the program. The 36-hour program will facilitate students who want post-graduate study as a requirement for professional certification.

Area of Specialization (15 hours)


Take fifteen hours from one of the following areas (6000-level or above): Mechanical Engineering (MENG), Civil Engineering (CENG), Environmental Engineering (EVEG), Electrical Engineering (EENG), or multi-disciplinary (by advisement). All 6000 level courses with a prefix of ENGR will count in any specialization or sub-specialization.

Sub-Specialization (12 hours)


  • Take six hours from a second area of specialization: MENG, CENG, EVEG, or EENG at the 6000 level.
  • Take six hours from MGT or CIDM by advisement at the 5000 or 6000 level.

Electives (6 hours)


Take six hours of 5000 or 6000 level courses from MGT or CIDM by advisement.

Non-Thesis Project (3 hours)


Take a three-credit-hour project course.

Students will enroll in ENGR 6394  near the completion of their degree. In this course students will work closely with an engineering faculty member and apply knowledge gained in the selected specialization and sub-specialization area of study to the solution of a project suitable for presentation at the regional or national level. Project must be approved by the supervising faculty member prior to initiation. The comprehensive examination for this degree occurs at the presentation of the student capstone product to the graduate committee.

Non-Thesis Option with Emphasis on Leadership and Management (36 hours)


The non-thesis option with emphasis on leadership and management requires thirty-six (36) credit hours of course work including a three-hour project course. The project course incorporates a written report and oral presentation to the Graduate Advisory Committee. This presentation will also serve as the comprehensive examination for the program. The 36-hour program will facilitate students who want to focus post-graduate study on leadership and management within an engineering context.
