The mission of the M.S.S.W. program at West Texas A&M University is to prepare advanced generalist practitioners who are equipped with an eclectic knowledge base, professional values, and a wide range of advanced skills to assume the professional responsibilities of change agents in our rapidly changing, culturally diverse, global society. The practitioner should enhance the social functioning and interaction of her/his client systems, help clients develop resources, alleviate human suffering in the pursuit of the improvement of quality of life and conditions of people living in the rural Texas panhandle region, the state, the nation, and the world.

The goals of the M.S.S.W. program at WTAMU are to educate students who:

  • Become Advanced Generalist Practitioners;
  • Use a variety of theoretical perspectives;
  • Develop interventions at all levels of systems practice; and
  • Are knowledgeable in the unique aspects of rural communities.

Graduates will be prepared with advanced practice skills which allow them to:

  • Differentially assess problems;
  • Employ specialized interventions;
  • Develop more rigorous evaluation techniques; and
  • Establish themselves as leaders with systems of all sizes and levels of complexity.

Requirements:

Notes:

  • Once the foundation courses are completed, foundation students can enroll in advanced standing courses.
  • Foundation students should complete 400 hours of field practicum before moving to advanced standing.

Additionally, students should complete two graduate-level elective courses.

Notes:

  • Students can enroll in free electives any semester of the program. Free Electives means that students have complete control over what class they would like to enroll in as long as it is a graduate level course (5000 or 6000 level) and NOT a repeat of an undergraduate course.
  • Synchronous virtual classrooms operate much like traditional classrooms, with set study schedules and live discussions.
  • Asynchronous classrooms look a little different, as students digest the instruction and communicate with each other on their own time with regularly scheduled assignments and activities.
  • Students complete 500 hours of advanced field practicum.
