Music Therapy B.M.

Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Degree


Requirements

Major in Music Therapy


(Major Code: 206)

Students completing this degree program will be prepared to enter music therapy profession. Following all course work and a six-month internship, students are eligible for professional membership with the American Music Therapy Association. Students also are eligible to take a national certification exam. Upon successful completion of this exam, students will receive board certification (MT-BC).

University Core Curriculum Requirements

Note:


Music majors cannot receive core credit for MUSI 1306 . MUSI 1208  and MUSI 1209  satisfies “Visual and Performing Arts” in the core curriculum. Laboratory science is BIOL 2401  and BIOL 2402 .

Other Requirements


Students must receive approval from the director of music therapy before entering the music therapy professional sequence. Students may apply for acceptance into the sequence during the first month of the first semester of the sophomore year (third semester at WTAMU). Complete applications will be reviewed only twice per year. For admission requirements and application procedures, see the director of music therapy.

Students enrolling in the following courses need to have liability insurance. For details and application procedure, see the director of music therapy


 

A minimum of eight semesters of major ensemble


 

Recital, concert, weekly seminar and departmental meeting attendance


 

Satisfactory senior recital performance before graduation


(This recital may feature the student’s major instrument, music therapy demonstration or a combination of these. If a music therapy demonstration is included, it must involve performances on the student’s major instrument plus another instrument.)

Internship


Students must satisfactorily (which means a grade of “C” or better in MUSI 4398 ) complete a six-month internship with an approved institution prior to being awarded the degree.
