Note: Candidates may complete the degree only or complete the degree with the principal preparation coursework. Candidates seeking the principal preparation coursework only must hold a previously earned master’s degree.

Educational Leadership (Degree only)

Admission requirements:

Bachelor’s degree (with an overall GPA of 2.75 or a 2.75 on the last 60 hours attempted at a regionally accredited institution of higher education)
Valid classroom teaching certificate or proof of pending teacher certification
Two years of creditable teaching experience as a classroom teacher or proof of pending teacher certification
Meet all Graduate School requirements
Complete application screening process, including:
- Review of past academic performance
- Professional resume
- Two letters of recommendation
- Service record

Principal Certification Courses (12 SCH):

EDLD 6343 - Advancing Instructional Practice and Student Learning 3
EDLD 6347 - Instructional Leadership and Professional Development 3
EDLD 6349 - Collaborative Teams, School Culture & Climate 3
Note: The courses above may be taken in any order within the first 12 months of the program. Practicum field experiences are integrated within these three courses. Changes in the Texas Administrative Code can impact program requirements.
EDLD 6313 - Human Capital 3
*When all four courses are successfully completed, the Principal Candidate will be eligible to take the Principal as Instructional Leader (#268) TExES.

Note: Students that are not successful in passing the Principal as Instructional Leader (#268) TExES, will be required to take EDLD 6312 for this section.

Research and Theory Courses (6 SCH):

* Upon successful completion of EDPD 6303 , the Principal Candidate will be eligible to submit the Performance Assessment for School Leaders (PASL #368) assessment.

Educational Leadership Courses (9 SCH):

Choose three courses (9 SCH) from the following options:

Competency-Based Credit Statement:

Candidates may be eligible to earn three (3) hours of competency-based graduate credit from successful completion of an approved Aspiring Administrator or Leadership Academy training. The competency-based credit will be awarded through EDLD 6391 .

All requests for competency-based credit must be approved through a Department of Education Competency Credit Faculty Review committee before the credit will be awarded.

Note:

The comprehensive exam is required during or after the last semester of enrollment and is required for the conferral of the M.Ed. degree. Documentation of two years of creditable teaching experience and successful completion of the TExES principal exams is required to earn the Texas principal certificate.
