Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) M.S.N.

Admission Requirements


In addition to University requirements for admission, the applicant must have:

  • A minimum of a B.S.N. degree from a CCNE or NLN accredited school of nursing and RN licensure in good standing in the state in which practicums will be completed.
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA with no grade below “C” for the last 60 hours taken.
  • WTAMU Graduate School acceptance.
  • Completion of a basic statistics course with a grade of “C” or higher.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Current immunizations, including Hepatitis B.
  • Formal application to the Graduate Nursing Program (application fee required).

General Requirements


Each student will:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students must complete the approved 46-hour curriculum.
  • Students taking the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Specialization must complete the approved 75-hour curriculum.
  • Successfully complete the required FNP portfolio.
  • Comply with any additional Department of Nursing and general University requirements for the Master of Science in Nursing degree.
  • Select one of two options:
    • Option 1 - Family Nurse Practitioner
    • Option 2 - FNP with Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Specialization

Note: Students must enroll in NURS 6216  during their last long semester. Students will complete required portfolio items during all primary care courses in the FNP program, as well as during the didactic and clinical courses for students in the PMHNP specialization. The FNP portfolio provides evidence of personal accomplishments, tangible demonstration of skills, and evidence of program learning outcomes established for the M.S.N. FNP program. Students will assemble the portfolio during courses to demonstrate competencies in the program learning outcomes and will submit the completed portfolio during NURS 6216 . Students that have elected to add the PMHNP specialization, will submit this combined FNP/PMHNP portfolio in NURS 6216  and NURS 6553 .
