Post-M.S.N. Licensure Program for Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

(Major code: 5702)

A 28-hour plan of graduate study leading to completion of a post-graduate certificate program that will increase the number of Family Nurse Practitioners and will lay the foundation for Nursing Board licensure as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

The primary aim of the Family Nurse Practitioner role specialization option at WTAMU is to prepare nurses for primary care in underserved areas and to improve access to primary healthcare for all. The post-master’s program is designed as a certificate course of study that enables a practicing nurse who holds a Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree to prepare for credentialing as and FNP. Upon completion of the prescribed course of study, the student’s transcript indicates that he/she has completed the education preparation as regulated by the Texas Board of Nursing. The student is then eligible to take a national FNP certification exam.

Admission Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing.
  • Completed graduate level coursework in Pathophysiology, Pharmacotherapeutics, and Advanced Physical Assessment with a grade of “B” or higher. A student who has one or more of the pre-requisite courses on his/her M.S.N. transcript may receive credit toward the FNP requirements if those courses have been taken within five years of enrollment in the post-Master’s course of study and if they correspond to the WTAMU course descriptions.

General Requirements

Each student will:

  • Post-MSN Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students must complete the approved 28-hour curriculum.
  • Successfully complete the required FNP portfolio.
  • Comply with any additional Department of Nursing and general University requirements for the Post-MSN Family Nurse Practitioner certificate/licensure preparation.

Note: Students must enroll in NURS 6216  during their last long semester. Students will complete required portfolio items during all primary care courses in the FNP program. The FNP portfolio provides evidence of personal accomplishments, tangible demonstration of skills, and evidence of program learning outcomes established for the M.S.N. FNP program. Students will assemble the portfolio during courses to demonstrate competencies in the program learning outcomes and will submit the completed portfolio during NURS 6216 .
