Admission Requirements
- Undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0
- Successful completion of Calculus II or higher level mathematics course
- Complete application to the Graduate School (https://www.wtamu.edu/academics/graduate-school/apply/index.html)
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions
- Letter of intent that describes the student career goals with completion of the program of study
Leveling Requirements
Leveling course work in undergraduate mathematics may be required or recommended for students admitted without successful completion of Calculus II and students admitted without an undergraduate degree in mathematics or related field, dependent upon student stated goals for the program.
Applied Mathematics Non Thesis Option (36 credit hours)
Mathematics Courses
The non-thesis applied mathematics option requires a minimum of twenty-seven (27) semester hours of mathematics 6000-level courses. No more than six hours may be taken from MATH 6380 , MATH 6381 , MATH 6382 , and MATH 6383 .
Electives (6 hours)
Take six hours of electives in a related field at the 5000-level or above by advisement.
Capstone (3 hours):
Students will enroll in MATH 6394 near the completion of their degree. In this course students will work closely with a mathematics faculty member and apply knowledge gained in the selected area of study to the solution of a project suitable for presentation at the regional or national level. Project must be approved by graduate committee prior to initiation. The comprehensive examination for this degree occurs at the presentation of the student capstone product to the graduate committee.
Further requirements:
Other STEM (MENG, CENG, EENG, CIDM, etc.) can be substituted as advised by Mathematics Graduate Advisory Committee, but a minimum of 18 total hours of the degree must be in mathematics.
Applied Mathematics Thesis Option (30 credit hours)
Mathematics Courses
The thesis applied mathematics option requires a minimum of twenty-four (24) semester hours of 6000-level mathematics courses. No more than six hours may be taken from MATH 6380 , MATH 6381 , MATH 6382 , and MATH 6383 .
Thesis (6 credit hours):
Take six hours of thesis research credits, MATH 6301 and MATH 6302 . Students will participate in graduate level research guided by their thesis committee. At the conclusion of MATH 6301 students will have clearly stated their problem, completed a thorough review of the literature and determined a solution methodology. We encourage significant work as to present the current research gains at a regional or national conference at the conclusion of the first course. In MATH 6302 students will complete their research and prepare an article for submission to a targeted national or international journal. All thesis students must successfully complete a final defense of their research work, presented to the thesis committee at the conclusion of the research.
