Entering graduate students must take placement exams in music theory and music history. Additional coursework may be required as a result of these exams.

Required Music Courses for Options:


Performance Pedagogy Option


  • MUSI 6291 Pedagogy in Music  2
  • 8 hours from area-specific (instrumental, keyboard, vocal) courses in pedagogy, literature, and practicum, 
  • 4 semester hours graduate ensemble,
  • Additional courses to equal 30 semester hours: Applied music optional (eight semester hours maximum) or graduate-level music courses.

Thesis Option (Prose Thesis, or Composition)


MUSI 6301  and MUSI 6302 , applied music optional (eight semester hours maximum), graduate-level music courses to equal 30 semester hours.

Non-Thesis Option


Applied music optional (eight semester hours maximum), graduate-level music courses to equal 36 semester hours.

Comprehensive Examination


Candidates will be required to pass an oral examination over the thesis or the literature in their recital, depending on the option selected, and the major field of study.
