Mechanical Engineering Requirements

A grade of “C” or better is required for all prerequisites listed for ECS courses required for MENG majors.

Program Educational Objectives

The West Texas A&M University Mechanical Engineering Program has the following objectives. During the first few years after graduation, engineers from the program will:

Be professionally employed, serving the rapidly changing technological needs of industry, governmental organizations, or other entities regionally or throughout the state and nation, and continue to grow professionally through activities such as pursuing formal graduate study, research or continuing education, achieving professional licensure, and participating in technical societies.
Develop an understanding of the business mission, vision, and objectives and be able to provide practical solutions that further those.
Understand and appreciate the social, economic, and environmental issues that relate to ethical practice in a modern global society.
Demonstrate continually advancing critical thinking in professional practice and personal lives, begin to take increasingly responsible leadership roles on interdisciplinary team, and communicate clearly in both technical and non-technical forums.

Student Outcomes

Faculty members use the program educational outcomes to develop the topics covered and assignments in each course. By the time of graduation, mechanical engineering students will demonstrate competence in:

a. ability to apply knowledge of matematics, science and engineering;

b. ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;

c. ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability;

d. ability to function on multidisciplinary teams;

e. ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems;

f. ability to understand professional and ethical responsibility;

g. ability to communicate effectively;

h. ability to attain broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental and societal context;

i. ability to recognize the need for and engagement in life-long learning;

j. ability to gain knowledge of contemporary issues;

k. ability to use techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Admission Requirements for Pre-Engineering and Mechanical Engineering

All mechanical engineering students must meet WTAMU admission standards as outlined in this catalog. Upon admission to the University, all students would be eligible to engage in and complete the first two years of the Engineering Program. In the semester during which the student would complete the pre-engineering sequence (cited below), the student may petition for admittance into the Mechanical Engineering Program. Every student enrolled in mechanical engineering courses must first be admitted into the Mechanical Engineering Program or receive special permission from the CS Director.

Criteria for Admission into the Mechanical Engineering Program

Overall GPA of at least 2.25

Completion of the pre-engineering sequence:

PHYS 2425 - Calculus Physics I (HAZ) 4
PHYS 2426 - Calculus Physics II (HAZ) 4
ENGR 1301 - Fundamentals of Engineering (HAZ) 3

ENGR 2301 - Engineering Statics 3
ENGR 2302 - Engineering Dynamics 3
with a minimum GPA of 2.75

Successful completion of the entrance interview with adviser

Note:

Students pursuing a mechanical engineering degree who do not meet the aforementioned criteria are to be listed as pre-engineering (Major Code 128) students. Students may appeal the Engineering Admissions Committee decisions, first to the committee and then to the CS Director. Exceptions, resulting in conditional admission, will be considered on an individual basis by the CS Director.
