The Office of Scholarship Services, located in Old Main, Room 105, oversees scholarship processes at West Texas A&M University. The University’s scholarship program is designed to give tangible encouragement and public recognition to students with outstanding academic qualifications and skills. Although most University scholarships are awarded based on an applicant’s academic record and overall achievements, some are based on demonstration of leadership, campus and community involvement, and financial need.
The scholarship application and award processes occur each spring semester for the following academic year. There are several levels of award opportunities for incoming freshmen who submit their application by the Feb. 1 priority date. The application for scholarships for all students is available on the scholarship website at wtamu.edu/scholarships. Prior to submission of the scholarship application, new freshman, transfer and graduate students must first complete the application for admission at applytexas.org.
New freshman applicants who complete and submit the scholarship application by the “Early Action” date of Dec. 1 of each year are given first consideration for review and will receive notification of award decisions by Feb. 1; new freshman applicants who complete and submit the scholarship application by the “Priority” date of Feb. 1 will receive notification of awards by May 1 or earlier.
All other students who complete and submit the scholarship application by the Feb. 1 priority date will be given first consideration and receive notification of award decisions by July 1 or earlier; applications received after Feb. 1 will be given consideration until scholarship funds are exhausted.

Patrick J. Acker Memorial Scholarship was established from earnings of an endowment fund established for students interested in pursuing a career in alternative energy.
Baker-Singhal Scholarship for Outstanding International Scholars was established in 2012 by WTAMU alumni Baker and Singhal, who met at WTAMU and married and currently reside in Rochester, NY. WTAMU holds a special place in their hearts and have given them unforgettable memories and cherished, lifelong friendships. Recipient must be a full-time (15 semester hours) freshman, transfer, or currently enrolled undergraduate student with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to international students. With the application, submit an essay on “How will you continue your relationship with WT after graduation?” and send via email attachment to scholarships@wtamu.edu.
John T. Boone and Physical Plant Employees Memorial Fund was established by gifts from individuals who knew and loved Boone. Eligible recipients of this scholarship are full-time employees of the WTAMU Physical Plant, their spouses or children who attend WTAMU.
Bob and Connie Burgoon Educational Scholarship was established by the Burgoon’s children in honor of their parents dedication to education. Recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior enrolled in 12 hours per semester, maintain a 2.8 GPA and must be an active participant in the WTAMU Church of Christ Bible Chair and Student Center. Preference will be given based on need.
Church of Christ Scholarship provides scholarships for full-time students. Freshmen must have applied and been accepted by WTAMU; current students must be enrolled in at least 12 hours per semester, maintain a 2.0 GPA and must be a member of their home congregation. Application must provide a recommendation letter from home eldership of church leaders.
Annette L. Couch Memorial Leadership Scholarship serves as a lasting honor to Ms. Couch and her commitment to and passion for WT. Ms. Couch graduated from WT in 1976 with a B.S. in communication. Recipient must be a full-time student actively participating in the LEAD WT program. Preference will be given to students with financial need.
Wesley Cox Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 to provide scholarships for WTAMU students and to attract and retain students from across the Texas Panhandle as active members of the Church of Christ Bible Chair.
Charles C. and Pauline A. Dosier Memorial Educational Scholarship Fund was established by Ms. Connie Burgoon in memory of her parents, Charles C. and Pauline A. Dosier, to honor their dedication to higher education. Recipients will be students who are active in the Church of Christ Bible Chair and have been recommended by the Church of Christ Bible Chair.
Education Credit Union-Wind Energy Scholarship was established to support a growing need for resources and education in the field of renewable energy. Recipient must be a full-time student interested in wind energy.
Spicer Gripp Rodeo Scholarship was established in 1995 to provide rodeo scholarships to students demonstrating performance and leadership in rodeo activities. The student must remain eligible by NIRA standards.
Jody Hart Memorial Rodeo Scholarship was established in 1996 to honor Hart and to provide scholarships for students who demonstrate performance and leadership in rodeo activities and remain eligible by NIRA standards.
Wilbur and Nellie Killebrew Provost Leadership Scholarship was established by Flavius, Robert and Wilbur Killebrew in memory of their parents. Students must be from the Texas Panhandle. Preference will be given to students from Canadian, Hemphill County or Roberts County, and must have a 3.0 GPA.
C.M. Kuhlman Memorial Rodeo Scholarship was established in 1999 to honor the memory of Kuhlman and to provide scholarships to WTAMU students in rodeo activities. No specific majors; 2.5 GPA for sophomore, junior and senior students; entering freshmen must be in the top 25 percent of their graduating class; financial need and leadership will be considered.
Herbert F. Kuhlman Memorial Rodeo Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Herbert Kuhlman and to provide scholarship awards to WTAMU rodeo students. No specific majors; 2.5 GPA for sophomore, junior and senior students; entering freshmen must be in top 25 percent of their graduating class; financial need and leadership will be considered.
Virginia Maples/WT Women Scholarship was established in 2008 by WT Women in memory of Maples, who worked at WTAMU for 15 years and retired in 2008. She was a dedicated member of WT Women and served in various offices of the organization. Recipient must be a child or grandchild, of any faculty or staff member of WTAMU, who is attending or planning to attend WTAMU. Class rank and ACT/SAT scores will be the primary determinant for incoming freshmen, and transfer and returning students must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or greater. Preference will be given based on demonstrated leadership and campus and/or community involvement; other scholarship awards may be taken into consideration.
Matthews Rodeo Scholarship was established in 1995 to provide scholarship awards to students in the WTAMU rodeo program. Students must demonstrate outstanding performance and leadership in the Southwest Region and remain eligible by NIRA standards.
Ruth Cox Merchant Scholarship was established by Ruth Cox Merchant to provide scholarships to encourage Christian teachers. All applicants must have applied and been admitted to WTAMU, declared education as their major and demonstrate active involvement in the Church of Christ denomination. Current students must maintain a 2.75 GPA or above, full-time status (12 semester hours) and provide a letter of recommendation from church leadership.
Starcher-Nelson Renewable Energy Scholarship was established in 2009 by Kenneth Starcher and Dr. Vaughn Nelson, two prominent researchers in the field of renewable energy, specifically wind energy, who have worked at the WTAMU Alternative Energy Institute since its founding in 1977. The scholarship will benefit students contributing to the ongoing research of renewable energy. Recipient must be an undergraduate or graduate student selected from the renewable energy degree program upon its creation. Until that time, recipients will be selected from majors in engineering (any discipline), engineering technology, physics or math.
Sam Wallas and Helen Cowan Huggins Provost’s Leadership Scholarship was established in 1998 to provide annual scholarships to recruit and retain outstanding students at WTAMU. Recipient must be enrolled in a minimum of 15 hours per semester, maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA, and provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Bertie May Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1974 by family, students and friends of was established in 1974 by family, students and friends of Williams. Cornette Library student employee who has completed 30 hours with the last 12 hours at WTAMU; 3.0 GPA. Selection is made by the Bertie May Williams Scholarship Committee.
Eddie Wilson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002 in memory of Chief Eddie Wilson by friends and family. Recipient must be pursuing a degree that will assist in becoming a peace officer and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Financial need and leadership will be considered. Preference will be given to full-time University Police Department employees; renewable.
WT Women Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for children and grandchildren of WTAMU faculty and staff members who are attending or planning to attend WTAMU. Priority will be given for academic ability, leadership, campus and community involvement. If the student is a beginning freshman, rank in class and ACT/SAT scores will be a primary determinant. If the student is a continuing, transfer or returning student, accumulative grade point average will be primary determinant. Financial need is not a prerequisite, but other scholarships awarded may be considered.
WTAMU Rodeo Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide scholarships to students demonstrating outstanding performance and leadership in the Southwest Region. The student must remain eligible by NIRA standards.
Scholarships Administered by the Office of Financial Aid
James H. and Minnie M. Edmonds Educational Fund was established from monies contributed from the James H. and Minnie M. Edmonds Educational Foundation and provides need-based scholarships for students. Priority will be given to first-generation students with proven need.
Scholarships Administered by the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics
Athletic General Scholarship was established in 2014 to assist students with their academic endeavors. Students must be enrolled at WTAMU and must be a member of the WTAMU athletics team or a full-time student who meets the criteria of a specific promotional contest.
Athletic Summer Scholarship was established to award summer scholarships to athletes in the intercollegiate athletic programs. The recipient must be a WTAMU athlete.
John M. Ayers Memorial Scholarship for Football was established in 1995 to honor the memory of Ayers, a WTAMU football player from 1972-1975. The recipient should be a WTAMU student in football; preference will be given to an upperclassman in good academic standing, hard worker, solid citizenship and leader by example.
Boyce and L. Louise Box Christian Athlete Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Box’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to honor the couple for their dedication to West Texas A&M University. Establishment of this Christian athlete scholarship at WTAMU forever celebrates the two most memorable and unifying parts of the Box family life, the love of God along with the pursuit and joy of sports. Recipients must be undergraduate Christian athletes who maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Inez Butler Memorial Lady Buff Volleyball Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide scholarship funds for Lady Buff Volleyball player(s). It will be awarded to an outstanding freshman and may be renewed for a student-athlete with a 2.5 GPA and recommendation of the head coach.
Paul and Bess Castleberry Memorial Scholarship was established in 1994 by friends and family of Castleberry to provide scholarships for the most-dedicated and hardest-working student football-equipment manager, completion of one semester at WTAMU.
Ray Cliver Lady Buff Basketball Scholarship Fund was established in 1998 to provide Lady Buffs Basketball players with scholarship funds; must meet NCAA requirements.
Everett and Myra Nell Culp Memorial Scholarship was established by the Culp’s son in honor of his parents love for West Texas A&M University. Recipient must be an active baseball player enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) or complete a minimum of 24 semester hours per year and maintain a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Kendrick Cutsinger Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family to honor the memory of Cutsinger, a tight end for the Buffaloes who was well liked and respected by his teammates. Recipient must be a current member of the WTAMU football team and maintain NCAA eligibility requirements. Also, the student-athlete must complete a minimum of 12 hours per semester and maintain at least a 2.8 GPA.
Janna Detrixhe Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1994 by gifts from family and friends of Detrixhe to honor her memory. This fund provides intercollegiate athletics scholarships for WTAMU students preferably in women’s basketball.
Jess Lwood Dow Football Scholarship was established in 2003 in memory of Dow, a 1938 graduate of the University, by Dow’s widow, Marjy N. Ehmer Dow. Mr. Dow was a member of the Buffalo football team and is a member of the WTAMU Hall of Champions and had a distinguished career as a coach and educator. The scholarship is designated for a current intercollegiate football player, member of the Buffalo football team who is originally from the Texas Panhandle or South Plains region and who has a background in farming.
Foundation for Buffalo Athletics Scholarships are presented to student-athletes who maintain current NCAA academic and satisfactory progress standards.
J.W. Foust Men’s Basketball Scholarship was established by the WTAMU Cager Club in memory of long-time friend and supporter of men’s basketball, J.W. Foust. Recipients will be men’s basketball players who have exhausted their playing eligibility, with at least two years in residence at WTAMU, minimum 2.0 GPA and lack no more than 30 hours to meet graduation requirements.
Cal Garrett Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Garrett family to honor Calvin and provide support for a deserving student on the men’s and/or women’s golf teams at WTAMU. The recipient must be a member of the WTAMU golf team.
Bob Givens Cross-Country Memorial Scholarship was established in 2001 to honor the memory of Bob Givens and to provide scholarships for the students who are members of the WTAMU Cross-Country Team(s). The recipient must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours. Incoming freshman recipient must satisfy requirements as a NCAA qualifier. Returning student currently enrolled and in good standing may be eligible for the scholarship by maintaining a cumulative 2.75 GPA.
Homer and Eloise Harvey Booster Scholarship was established by Homer and Eloise Harvey, long time boosters of the Lady Buff Volleyball team. They have taken the ladies of the volleyball team in as their own and provided endless support throughout the athlete’s career and after. Recipient must be a returning member of the Lady Buff Volleyball team with a 2.5 GPA or higher, must show dedication and spirit, and be recommended by the head volleyball coach.
2009 Lady Buff Volleyball Seniors Endowed Scholarship was established by the 2009 senior class of Melissa Harper, Natalie Johnson, Laura Prinsen and Katie Rickwartz with previous teammate, Jessica Tuttle, along with family and fans to help sustain the tradition of excellence for Lady Buff Volleyball. Recipient must be an active member of the WT Volleyball Team meeting all criteria necessary to be awarded an athletic scholarship, U.S. citizen and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA. The scholarship will be awarded for both long semesters but may be canceled at the end of the fall semester if the recipient fails to meet the criteria during the fall term or if the recipient elects to quit the team.
Eric Lathrop Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Eric Lathrop, former WTAMU men’s cross-country coach from 1993-2006, who passed away on March 26, 2006. The award will be made to benefit all scholarship athletes in men’s cross-country.
Robert A. Lauffer Memorial Men’s Soccer Scholarship (formerly the Robert A. Lauffer Memorial Lady Buff Soccer Scholarship) was established in loving memory of Lauffer by his sister Marylee Jones and her husband Dave. Student must be a member of the WTAMU men’s soccer team and must meet NCAA eligibility requirements.
Coach Gene Mayfield Football Scholarship was established and supported by friends and family of former WT head football coach, Gene Mayfield. Recipient must be a football player chosen for his leadership both on and off the field of play. Also, the student must maintain a minimum GPA in accordance with NCAA standards. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met or an undergraduate degree is earned.
NWIT Lady Buff Scholarship provides scholarships for Lady Buff Basketball players who meet NCAA requirements and are Texas Panhandle female graduates from the northernmost 32 counties of Texas, including Plainview, Abernathy, Tulia.
Ryan Palmer Foundation Golf Scholarship was established to support the women’s and men’s golf scholarship program.
Jimmy Reese Athletic Scholarship Endowment was established to provide intercollegiate athletics with scholarships in men’s basketball and to honor the memory of Reese, a long-time supporter of WT athletics. Recipient must be a member of the WTAMU men’s basketball team and must meet eligibility as defined by NCAA and institutional standards.
Beryl Ellen Richardson Memorial Lady Buff Volleyball Scholarship was established in memory of Beryl, an avid Lady Buffs volleyball fan. Recipient must be a WTAMU Lady Buff volleyball player, current student-athlete or an outstanding freshman with a 2.5 GPA and recommendation by the head coach. Scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Scherr Family Volleyball Scholarship was established by Douglas and Lori Scherr in honor of their daughter, Jessica Scherr, a volleyball player at WTAMU. The family wanted to show their support for the program and to help a deserving student. Recipient must be a member of the WTAMU Women’s Volleyball Team; be enrolled full time (15 semester hours); and have a minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable.
Coach Bob Sloan Baseball Scholarship was established by Coach Sloan’s former players as an honor to the time and effort that he put forth while at the University and the influence he had in each one of their lives. Recipient must be a WTAMU baseball player enrolled in at least 12 hours per semester and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Additionally, the recipient must be from the Texas Panhandle, Eastern New Mexico or Western Oklahoma with preference given based on need.
Kay Stahlecker Memorial Lady Buff Scholarship was established in 1998 by friends and family of Stahlecker to honor her and to provide Lady Buff basketball players with scholarships; must meet NCAA eligibility requirements.
Pamela Pool Stevens Endowed Scholarship for Women’s Athletics was established by Stevens, member of a long-time Texas Panhandle ranching family and strong supporter of programs that help ensure college graduation for women. Recipient must be a female student-athlete enrolled full time (15 hours per semester) or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year and maintain a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Imogene Wagner Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Ms. Imogene Wagner by her family and friends, including her daughters Roya Gore, Robin Crumb, Lissa Merchant and Marie Bogda, a close family friend. Recipient will be the most scholastically accomplished female graduate from the Amarillo Independent School District who participated on her school’s tennis team as a senior; must meet NCAA eligibility requirements.
The Philip and Patsy Wright Athletics Scholarship was established by gifts from Lee and Len Wright, sons of the Wrights, in memory of their father and in honor of their mother. Philip and Patsy could be seen together at WT football, basketball, and volleyball games, and have attended hundreds of local high school and college sporting activities. This scholarship ensures that students achieving success in WTAMU athletics will also achieve success in the classroom. The recipient must be an active member of the WTAMU volleyball team, enrolled full-time, and maintain a 3.0 GPA. Additionally, the student-athlete must demonstrate leadership and a hard work ethic on and off the court. The recipient must be a motivator to their fellow teammates and display a positive attitude of perseverance that drives not only a successful season but also, a successful academic career. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

ARAMARK President’s Honor Scholarship was established in 1993 to award a President’s Honor Scholarship to a worthy and deserving student. Recipient must be enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
AT&T Foundation President’s Honor Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to recruit and retain outstanding students at WTAMU. This scholarship, originally named the Southwestern Bell President’s Honor Scholarship, has supported students since its inception in 1997. AT&T Foundation continues to support the mission of the University ensuring economic strength of the Panhandle Region. Preference will be given to a major in mathematics or one of the sciences, U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Recipient must be enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year. First- and second-generation college students, students who qualified for free lunch in high school and/or bilingual students will be given special consideration. Scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Bank of America President’s Honor Scholarship was established in 2002 to provide scholarships to a student with a 3.4 GPA. Recipient must be enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year. Student must demonstrate leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Kenny Bryan Memorial President’s Honor Scholarship was established to recruit and retain outstanding students at WTAMU and honor the memory of Bryan. Recipient must be an agriculture major at WTAMU and enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year for continuing eligibility, maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA, and provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Christian American Patriot President’s Honor Scholarship in Finance was established by the Fletchers, WTAMU Alumni, to support a small-town student who exhibits Christian principles and is active in community service. Recipient must be a finance major, enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Christian American Patriot President’s Honor Scholarship in Science or Education was established by the Fletchers, WTAMU Alumni, to support a small-town student who exhibits Christian principles and is active in community service. Recipient must be enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. Preference will be given to an education or science major. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Mary Harris Clark President’s Honor Scholarship was established and endowed by Dr. Barry Clark in memory of his mother, Mary Harris Clark. Recipient must be a math, physical sciences or engineering major enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, and maintain a 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Clay Cooper President’s Honor Scholarship was established by Charles Cooper, son of Clay. Recipient must be a graduate of McLean High School, enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Clay and Ermyle Cooper President’s Honor Scholarship was established in 2000 by Charles Cooper to honor his parents. Recipient must be a graduate of Canyon High School in Canyon, Texas, enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Ermyle Ruth Hill Cooper President’s Honor Scholarship was established by an initial gift from Charles Cooper, son of Ermyle Ruth Hill. Recipient must be a graduate of Dalhart High School, enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. The student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Marvin and Wilma Cornette President’s Honor Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Cornette. Recipient must be an education major, enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Ruth and George Eason President’s Honor Scholarship in Music was established in 2007 by Dr. Eason, former WTAMU faculty member. Recipient must be a music major with an emphasis in piano, organ, music therapy or double reed, maintain a 3.4 GPA, and enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Louisa Miller Eldredge Memorial President’s Honor Scholarship was established through a bequest by Frank Eldredge in memory of his wife to provide scholarships to recruit and retain outstanding students at WTAMU. Students must have been members of the National Honor Society or its equivalent, enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, and maintain a minimum cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Mary Ann Engler Nursing President’s Honor Scholarship was established by Paul Engler in honor of his wife Mary Ann’s birthday. The Englers expressed the hope that this scholarship will help ensure a continued supply of well-trained nurses for the Texas Panhandle. Recipient must be a nursing major enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Thelma and B. Raymond Evans Presidential Scholarship was established in 2008 by a generous gift from Mrs. Evans, a proud graduate of WTAMU. The late B. Raymond Evans graduated from WT in 1946. The recipient must be a participant in the Equine Industry Program as an equine industry and business major, Equestrian Team and/or Horse Judging Team member. Preference will be given to a student that is an Equestrian Team and/or Horse Judging Team member in addition to being an equine industry and business major. Additionally, the student must be enrolled 15 hours per semester or complete 30 semester hours per year and maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of eight long semesters or until the student completes a bachelor’s degree, as long as criteria are met.
Jim Foran Memorial President’s Honor Scholarship was established in 1995 by William J. and Roberne W. Foran in loving memory of their son, Jim. Recipient must be enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year; maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA; preference to graduates from Memphis, Texas, or from surrounding communities; and participate in high school athletics. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Roberne Wilson Foran President’s Honor Scholarship was established in 2008 by Roberne and William Foran. Funk Family President’s Honors Scholarship was established in 2000 by the Funk family and friends to provide scholarships for WTAMU football players. S.L. and Mildred Garrison President’s Honor Scholarship was established in 2002 with a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Garrison. Girl Power President’s Honor Scholarship was established by the proceeds from Girl Power 2004 and 2005. Many donors were responsible for contributing to this worthwhile project. Recipient must participate in women’s athletics; be enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year; and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Arthur J. Glover Memorial President’s Honor Scholarship in Accounting was established in 2008 in memory of Arthur J. Glover who was a life-long practicing certified public accountant and estate planner attorney. From 1968-1991, he spent the most enjoyable part of his life teaching all levels of accounting and CPA law review courses at WTAMU. Recipient must be a declared accounting major and enrolled 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of eight long semesters or until the student completes a bachelor’s degree, as long as criteria are met.
Luan Henson Memorial President’ Honor Scholarship was established by Nolon and Bobby Henson in memory of their daughter, Luan Henson. Recipient must be an agriculture major, preferably agriculture education major, enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, and maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Hodges Memorial President’s Honor Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to recruit and retain outstanding students to WTAMU, preference to graduates of Valley High School and residents of Briscoe, Floyd or Hall counties. Ray Koehler President’s Honor Scholarship was established by Catherine Koehler in memory of her husband, Ray Koehler. In honor of Catherine and as a Mother’s Day gift, her children made gifts to the endowment and increased the level to make this a President’s Honor Scholarship. David D. and Nona S. Payne Foundation President’s Honor Scholarship was established in 1996 as a leadership scholarship and was converted in 2008 to a President’s Honor Scholarship. Mrs. Payne established the foundation in 1980 and did much of her charitable giving in honor of her late husband, David Payne. Mrs. Payne was a very generous benefactor to charitable organizations in the Texas Panhandle. Lily Kitchens Wafford President’s Honor Scholarship in Visual Arts was established by Jackie Wafford Mercer, a WT graduate in 1943 and 1951, in honor of her mother who was a member of one of the first classes at WT. Jackie fondly remembers her mother talking about her own years as a student at WT when she took art classes with Georgia O’Keeffe. Recipient must be a full-time art student with a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Easton and Lila Wall President’s Honor Scholarship in Education (formerly the Easton and Lila Wall Provost’s Leadership and Easton and Lila Wall Education Scholarship) was established in 2002 to honor the Walls, both graduates of WTAMU with master and bachelor’s degrees, on their 50th wedding anniversary. Recipient must be enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA, and provide leadership and service to the University and community. Additionally, the student must have been a graduate of high school in (first choice) Angleton, Canyon, Dumas, Stratford or Vega, Texas; or (second choice) any high school in the Texas Panhandle. The student must have a sincere interest and desire in acquiring teaching credentials to teach in an elementary or secondary school in the state of Texas. Woltz Family President’s Honor Scholarship was established by Katherine Woltz’s family to support students who love music but are pursuing other academic interests. Recipient must be a non-music major who participates in the band program each long semester, be enrolled in at least 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year, and maintains a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Additionally, the student must provide leadership and service to the University and community. Preference will be given to eligible education majors. Salem and Ruth Ann Abraham Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by Salem and Ruth Ann Abraham. Recipient must be a graduate of Canadian High School, enrolled full time (12 hours per semester), maintain a 2.5 GPA, demonstrate financial need and have a determination to achieve a college degree.
Academic Excellence/Academic Freedom Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide scholarships for academically talented students who will recognize and support academic freedom. Preference to graduates of high schools in Region 16. Recipient must be enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) and maintain a 3.5 GPA overall for the year. The scholarship is renewable as long as recipient maintains eligible requirements. Application must be accompanied by written recommendations from two educators acquainted with the student.
Alcorn and Taylor Cotton Scholarship was established by Jan Alcorn, a 1966 and 1969 WT graduate who loved her college experience. Student must be a U.S. citizen or actively seeking citizenship within two years of the initial scholarship application. Also, student must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) undergraduate student and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Recipient must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA, verifying household adjusted gross income of no less than $40,000 and no more than $75,000. Recipient must document and explain how at least 75% of their household income, as reported on the FAFSA, is from the cotton industry and send via email attachment to scholarships@wtamu.edu. Preference will be given to applicants who are from cotton farming families and their dependents, or cotton farming employees and their dependents. Also, preference given to applicants who have attended high school in a Texas county that is a member of the Plains Cotton Growers, Inc. Applicant should be available for a personal interview if requested. Scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

C. Ray and Rachael Altmiller Scholarship Fund was established by Russell Altmiller to honor the memory of his parents, Ray and Rachael Altmiller. Recipient must be a graduate from a high school in Hemphill, Ochiltree or Lipscomb counties; must be an entering freshman with a high school 3.0 (“B”) GPA or better; and must write a short statement of not less than 50 words explaining why the scholarship is important to him or her.
Always WT Scholarship was established in 2010 by Dr. Marty Kuhlman, associate professor in the Department of History, who has a passion for teaching and helping students. Recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA with preference based on need.
Amarillo Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Inc. was the first corporate entity to give a substantial gift to the WTAMU Foundation Endowment for Excellence. Monies from this endowment are used for scholarships for outstanding students.
Amarillo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Intern Scholarship was established to promote Hispanic business development and quality of life. The recipient must be a bilingual College of Business major with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Josephine Anderson Leadership Scholarship was established in 1996 to provide scholarships for high school graduates from the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Selection of the recipient is competitive with minimum 85 GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered, and demonstration of leadership required. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Joseph and Rhoanna (Griego) Austin Scholarship was established by Joseph (Joe) and Rhoanna (Rho) who met and graduated from WTAMU. They have an appreciation for the individual attention and encouragement provided by their professors, as well as the overall “caring” environment that WTAMU provides. The Austins believe in the importance of a quality education in ensuring a high quality of life and want to help provide the opportunity to others. The recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in information and decision management or nursing, enrolled full time and have a B+ average (85 or higher) or 3.25 GPA. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Clifford Boyd and Linda Kay Baker Scholarship was established by the Panhandle-Plains Student Finance Corporation in honor of Clifford Baker, who serves as chairman of the board. Baker’s commitment to providing financial aid to college students goes back to 1966 when he became associate director of financial aid at WTAMU. He became director in 1970 and continued to arrange financial aid for students in need. Selection criteria will be based on financial need, service and leadership roles in high school and/or college, and not solely based on academic achievement but could accompany service and leadership roles if appropriate.
Bank of America Family Scholarship Fund was established in 1996 and intended to lighten the financial burden which education places on parents and/or grandparents of students attending college. Recipients must meet WTAMU admission requirements and attend the University. Also, students must be children or grandchildren of Bank of America-Amarillo area full-time employees who have been employed for one year and in good standing. Recipients must be full-time students, carrying a minimum of 12 hours per semester and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Other selection is based on (in order of importance): financial need, academic standing, and commitment to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Nona Barnett Leadership Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to freshmen from high schools in the northern most 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. The scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis with minimum 85 grade average, class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered, and demonstration of leadership required. The scholarship is renewable not to exceed eight semesters per recipient with minimum 2.50 GPA and 12 hours per semester.

Bell Helicopter Internship Scholarship was established to support Bell Helicopter’s internship program at WTAMU and elevate the program to a premiere and competitive opportunity for students. Scholarships are awarded to WTAMU students who are “interns in good standing.”
Betty Teel Bivins Leadership Scholarship was established in 1994 by friends and family of Bivins to honor her on Mother’s Day and to provide scholarships to freshmen from high schools in the northern most 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle.
M.K. Brown Foundation Leadership Scholarship, established in 1994, provides scholarships, preferably to graduates from Pampa High School or transfer students from Clarendon College, Pampa Center. Recipients must have a minimum 85 grade average or 3.0 GPA, with class rank, ACT/SAT scores and demonstration of leadership qualities.
Brumley Leadership Scholarship, established in 1993, is an annual scholarship given to students transferring to WTAMU with approximately 60 hours of which a minimum of 30 hours are from Amarillo College. Recipient must have a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate leadership qualities. Special attention to students receiving financial assistance at Amarillo College.
Mary Alice Burnett Leadership Scholarship was established in 1997 to provide scholarships for high school seniors, preferably graduates of Dumas High School, with a minimum 85 GPA; class rank and ACT/SAT scores will be considered; and demonstration of leadership is required. Scholarships are renewable when criteria is met.
Jack Burnett-Brumley Leadership Scholarship is awarded to entering freshmen, preferably a graduate of Dumas High School, with selection of the recipient competitive with minimum 85 GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered, and demonstration of leadership required. This scholarship is awarded annually and is renewable.
Cabot Corporation Leadership Scholarship was established in 1996 to provide scholarships to high school graduates from Pampa. Selection of the recipient is made on a competitive basis with minimum 85 GPA required, class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered; demonstration of leadership is required. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Canyon Rotary Club Scholarship provides scholarships for graduates (current or prior year) from a Canyon Independent School District high school. The student must be enrolled full time (12 or more hours each semester) and maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Cargill-Friona, Texas, Scholarship was established in 1992 by American Maize Product Inc. to provide scholarships to worthy and deserving students. Recipient must be a full-time student with first preference to children of Cargill-Friona, Texas, employees and secondary preference to students from Parmer, Castro or Deaf Smith counties.
Gary Lynn Castleman Memorial Scholarship was established to provide a $100 to $200 scholarship to a Canyon High School graduate who has attended WTAMU for one semester.
Zeke Castro Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends of Castro. The student must be a full-time junior or senior from the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Additionally, the student must provide documentation of migrant background. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Addie Brown Childress and Robert F. Childress Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends of the Childresses in 1993. This scholarship is available to worthy, deserving students enrolled at WTAMU. Financial need is a primary consideration.
Rodney Clawson Scholarship was established by Clawson, BMI’s 2013 songwriter of the year, to help students graduating from Gruver High School achieve their goals in higher education and live their dreams, just as many of his songs dictate. Clawson received his bachelor’ degree from WT and credits his education at WT for helping him to learn to write music. The recipient must be a graduate of Gruver High School and enroll full-time at WTAMU. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Levi W. Cole Leadership Scholarship was established to provide scholarship opportunities to deserving graduates of Canyon High School who are enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) and exhibit leadership qualities. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Harold and Joyce Courson Leadership Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide scholarships for high school graduates. Preference for high school graduates from Perryton, Texas. Selection of the recipient is competitive with minimum 85 GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered and demonstration of leadership required. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
J.W. “Cap” Daniels Memorial Scholarship was established in 1985 by the family of Daniels to provide annual scholarships to full-time sophomore and/or junior students with 3.0 GPA.
C.J. “Red” Davidson Scholarship was established by the Davidson Family Charitable Foundation of Fort Worth, Texas. It provides funds to award scholarships annually to deserving and capable full-time undergraduate Texas students who have never married; must have demonstrated academic excellence; a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Ralph and Elsie De Rubbo Scholarship was established by Lawrence and Jenny Lind Porter Scott in honor of Ralph and Elsie De Rubbo. Recipient should aim to enter the field of business, ranch management or music.
Scott Doores Scholarship was established in 2010 by Scott and provides much needed financial support to students. Preference will be given to students from Perryton High School and also, current WTAMU student-athletes. The recipient must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA or the high school equivalent.
M.S. and Meek Lane Doss Endowed Opportunity Award Scholarship was established in 2002 by the M.S. Doss Foundation Inc. to provide scholarships to undergraduate students at WTAMU with financial need, with a preference for students who are graduates of high schools located in western Texas anywhere west of a line drawn between Wichita Falls, Texas, to Laredo, Texas, or a high school located in southeastern New Mexico. Students pursuing an undergraduate degree from any school or department in the University are eligible.
Dumas Noon Lions Scholarship was established in 2009 through the West Texas A&M University Promoting Panhandle Partnerships (P3) campaign. Recipient must be transferring from the Amarillo College Moore County campus, enroll in at least 12 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 24 semester hours per year, and maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
Duncan and Boyd Scholarship provides scholarships for Duncan and Boyd employees and their children. Recipient must maintain a 2.0 GPA.
Farm Credit and Great Plains Ag Credit Scholarship was established as a partnership with Great Plains Ag Credit, based in Amarillo, and Farm Credit Bank of Texas, headquartered in Austin. Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) undergraduate students who have completed at least 30 hours with a minimum 2.5 GPA. The full-time requirement may be waived if the recipient is in his or her final semester before graduation and does not require a full course load to graduate. Recipients must be U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens and must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students from traditionally underrepresented populations in the approved majors (accounting, economics, finance, agriculture business and agriculture economics) and CAMP program.
FIMC Commercial Realty Inc. Residential Assistance Scholarship was established by Mr. Bill Chudej to help graduate students with housing awards. Recipient must be a new or continuing student admitted to a graduate degree program at WTAMU. Student must be enrolled in at least six hours per semester and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Additionally, the student must have completed FAFSA and demonstrate need. Scholarship Services will send graduate students email notification when the scholarship is available and interested students must write a short response of no more than 200 words answering two questions, details will be included in the email. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
First United Bank Scholarship was established in 2010 by First United Bank in support of education at WTAMU. The scholarship will fund nine individual scholarship awards annually with two from the College of Business, two from the Department of Agriculture, one from the Department of Education and four University-wide. Recipients must be juniors or seniors with a declared major and degree plan in that major. Emphasis shall be given, but not limited, to students from the Texas Panhandle or South Plains regions of Texas. Applicants need to be prepared to be personally interviewed about the information in their applications. Students must maintain a good standing with the University and maintain a 2.75 GPA with a minimum course load of 12 hours per semester. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Hosea D. Foster Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor Hosea Foster who was a business leader in the Canyon area for many years. Recipient must be an undergraduate and graduate student with purpose, merit and potential. Additionally, the student must enroll full-time (12 hours per semester, 6 hours per semester for graduate students), demonstrate need, and maintain a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable, although not guaranteed, if the criteria are met.
Foundation Leadership WTAMU Scholarship provides scholarships to encourage and enable high school seniors upon graduation to enroll and continue their education at WTAMU. Recipients must be freshmen WTAMU students from high schools in northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Competitive basis with minimum 85 grade average; class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered; demonstration of leadership required; renewable not to exceed eight semesters per recipient with minimum 2.5 GPA and 12 hours per semester.
James B. and Yvonne J. Franklin Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Franklins for students from the Texas Panhandle-Plains area who need financial assistance; grade point average is secondary to need.
Clyde M. Gassaway Memorial Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for graduates of Borger High School who are attending WTAMU, enrolled full time (12 semester hours) and who have a 3.0 GPA.
Greater Texas Foundation-Los Barrios de Amarillo Removing Educational Barriers Scholarship was established by Los Barrios de Amarillo, a civic organization in Amarillo, Texas, in partnership with Greater Texas Foundation. Membership of Los Barrios, composed of professional business men and women, have focused on encouraging youth to further their education beyond high school in order to secure their financial success and opportunities. Recipient must be an incoming freshman, enrolled 12 hours per semester, have attended the Step Up to Success Leadership Conference and have a 3.0 GPA.
Greater Texas Foundation - Phoebe and Chuck Hartline Removing Educational Barriers Scholarship was established by the Hartlines in partnership with the Greater Texas Foundation to promote the study of life sciences at WTAMU. Recipient must be a College of Agriculture, Science and Engineering major enrolled a minimum of 12 hours per semester with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given based on need. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Cindy Groomer Scholarship Fund was established by friends and family in honor of Groomer. Recipients will be any student in need of financial assistance to further his or her education.
Don and Sybil Harrington Academic Scholarship was created by gifts from the Don and Sybil B. Harrington Foundation. Recipients must be entering freshman, transfer or continuing students. Freshman students must have a minimum 24 ACT or comparable SAT. Transfer and continuing students must have a minimum 3.3 GPA and complete a minimum of 30 semester hours per year. This scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Dr. Gregory E. and Barbara J. Harrison Endowed Scholarship was established in 2013 by the Harrisons in conjunction with the Share Your Pride campaign at WTAMU. The Harrison family has a long-lasting connection to WTAMU. Recipient must be a full-time student with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to junior and seniors, student involvement, and need.
J.A. Hill Memorial Leadership Scholarship was created by family and friends to honor the memory of Dr. Hill, president of the University from 1918-1948. Recipients must be freshmen from high schools in the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle and have a minimum 85 (3.5) grade average, demonstrate leadership abilities, with class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered. This scholarship is renewable provided recipient maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA and enrolls in a minimum of 12 hours per semester.
Charles and Wanda Hoover Scholarship was established by gifts from Charles and Wanda Hoover to provide scholarships for outstanding students; National Merit recognized, President’s Honor Scholars, WTAMU Student Foundation Honor Scholars or Don and Sybil Harrington Honor Students; and financial need will be considered.
Betty Howell Leadership Scholarship was established in 1995 to honor Howell for a job well done in development at WTAMU. Preference is given to high school graduates from the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Selection of the recipient is competitive with minimum 85 GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered, and demonstration of leadership required. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Jacob and Frances Huber Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007 by the Hubers. Jacob served in World War II and returned to West Texas State College to complete his undergraduate and M.B.A. degrees in accounting. The Hubers wanted to give back to the University which prepared them and to the area and its students who have financial need. Recipient must demonstrate financial need, enroll full time and maintain a 2.6 GPA. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Hughes and Kelly Scholarship was established to honor Mr. Charles Hughes and Mr. Carter Kelly. Students must meet eligibility requirements for admission to WTAMU, enroll full-time, and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Preference given to juniors or seniors from the Amarillo area pursuing a degree in accounting, business or finance. Also, preference to students demonstrating financial need, but not qualify at the inception for a needs-based or low-income grant or scholarship. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Mildred Hulsey Scholarship was established by the Tulia High School Class of 1954 in honor of Mildred Hulsey, Tulia High School English teacher extraordinaire. Her students from 1942 through 1964 credit her with much of their success in life. They excelled in grammar and were excellent writers with a vast memorized collection of poetry. The majority became life-long readers because of her love of literature. The scholarship will go to a worthy Tulia High School graduating senior in the top 25 percent of the academic class.
Melvin and Mike Isley Leadership Scholarship was established in 1993 to provide scholarships for freshmen from high schools in the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Selection of the recipient is competitive with minimum 85 GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered, and demonstration of leadership required. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Dewey Jackson and Gladys Parkey Scholarship for Entering Freshmen was established by Mr. and Mrs. Glen Parkey to honor Mr. Parkey’s parents, Dewey Jackson and Gladys Parkey. Recipients must reside in the Panhandle Region; must be in the top 25 percent of their high school class, academically; must be a first-generation student; must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher; must complete a minimum of 12 hours each semester; and must take and pass the College Success Course or its equivalent the first semester of their freshman year. From their sophomore year forward, recipients must be involved in extracurricular activities on campus, such as community service, leadership in campus organizations, fraternities or sororities.
R.C. and Agnes Johnson Scholarship Fund was established by Christine Schuhart in loving memory of her parents and to provide financial assistance to qualified students who desire to further their education at WTAMU. Recipients must be of good character and ability, demonstrating true desire to obtain an education beyond the high school level; must be in the top quartile of their high school graduating class; priority given to students from Dallam and Hartley Counties.
Reba Rhea Killian Jones Scholarship was established in 2002 by Dr. Mitchell Jones, friends and family in memory of Mrs. Jones, a 1953 graduate of WTAMU. It provides scholarships for full-time (12 semester hours) female students with a 3.0 GPA with demonstrated financial need. No specific field of study is necessary, but the student must be seriously pursuing a degree.
Josserand Scholarship was established to recruit first-time in college graduates from Hereford High School. The goal is to provide well-qualified students from Hereford, Texas, a scholarship offer competitive with other institutions. Recipients must be Hereford High School graduates with a 3.3 or greater grade point average ranked in the top 25 percent of their high school graduating class with a preference to students in the top 10 percent. Instead of GPA and class rank other considerations may be used, such as, demonstrated potential for success. If the student is offered an academic commitment/guarantee award, these incentive funds will be in addition to the award.
Francis A. Kahler Scholarship was established by gifts from his son, Dr. John Kahler, to provide scholarships for outstanding students; National Merit recognized, President’s Honor Scholars, WTAMU Student Foundation Honor Scholars or Don and Sybil Harrington Honor Students. Financial need will be considered.
Kenady-Lee Scholarship was established in 1998 by friends and family to honor Arden and Lonnelle Kenady and to provide scholarships for a high school graduate from Wheeler, Texas, or the surrounding area. The student must be an incoming freshman enrolled full time (minimum of 12 semester hours). Preference will be given to a graduate from Wheeler High School, second to a high school graduate from Wheeler County, and third to a high school graduate from either Collingsworth or Donley counties.
Lemons Memorial Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to students that have a visual impairment of 20/70 or worse in the best eye with corrected measure. Additionally, the student must have completed 30 or more hours and have a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.

S.L. (Roy) Lockhart Boys Ranch Scholarship was established in 1973 by Lillie Mae Lockhart in honor of her husband to provide scholarships to graduates of Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch who attend WTAMU. Scholastic standing and ability of applicant and desire to further his or her education will be considered.
Troy and Betty Mays Leadership Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide scholarships to high school graduates from the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Selection of the recipient is competitive with a minimum 85 GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered, and demonstration of leadership required. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
H.E. and Inez B. McCarley Foundation Leadership Scholarship, established in 1994, is awarded to entering freshmen with preference to high school graduates from Pampa with competitive basis determined by minimum 85 grade average, class rank, ACT/SAT scores and demonstration of leadership. This scholarship is renewable provided recipient maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA and carries a minimum course load of 12 hours per semester.
Dr. Michael and Mrs. Lou Ann McKinney Endowed Scholarship was established as a gift from Chancellor Century Council of The Texas A&M University System in honor of Chancellor and Mrs. Michael D. McKinney. Dr. McKinney became Chancellor of the A&M System in 2006 and retired in 2011. Recipient must be an incoming freshman in the top 25 percent of his/her graduating class and must maintain a 3.25 or higher GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Linda G. Miller Leadership Scholarship is an annual scholarship presented to students transferring to WTAMU with approximately 60 hours of which a minimum of 30 hours are from Amarillo College. The recipient must have a 2.5 GPA and demonstrate leadership abilities. This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA and carries a minimum course load of 12 semester hours.
Michael J. Miller Scholarship was established by Miller who served as an adjunct instructor for the College of Business teaching management and marketing from 1987 to 1991. Recipient must be a junior, senior, or graduate student with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to students working full or part-time and also, nontraditional students (returning, single mothers, etc.).
Molyneaux Leadership Scholarship was established in 1999 to provide scholarships to freshmen from high schools in the northern most 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. The scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis with a minimum 85 GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered, and demonstration of leadership required. The scholarship is renewable not to exceed eight semesters per recipient with minimum 2.50 GPA and 12 hours per semester.
Muthersbough Family Endowment Scholarship was established by Kevin “Kim” Muthersbough in 1996 to honor his father John “Jack” Muthersbough on his retirement and also as a Christmas present. Recipients must be worthy and deserving WTAMU students.
Don and Dorothy Patterson Leadership Scholarship was established in 1993 by a gift from the Sybil B. Harrington Living Trust in honor of the Pattersons and is given to entering freshmen, who are graduates from high schools in the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Recipients must have a minimum 85 GPA, with class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered, and demonstration of leadership is required. This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA and carries a minimum course load of 12 hours per semester.
The T. Boone Pickens Scholarship for Academic Excellence was established from funds provided by T. Boone Pickens. The scholarship is intended to reward and recognize entering freshmen, continuing, and transfer undergraduate students who have demonstrated academic achievement, financial need and involvement in extracurricular activities. Freshman must be in the top 25 percent of their high school class, ACT/SAT scores considered; continuing students must have a cumulative 3.3 GPA. Preference will be given to all majors in the College of Business.
Esther L. Plank Memorial Scholarship provides scholarships to deserving students with financial need by giving assistance for tuition, fees and books above that received from other sources. Recipient must be enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to elementary education majors with financial need. This scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Don and Twanna Powell Leadership Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide scholarships for freshmen students from high schools in the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Students are required to have a minimum 85 GPA and to demonstrate leadership. Class rank and ACT/SAT test scores will be considered.
Jo Stewart Randel Leadership Scholarship, established in 1994 by gifts from friends of Randel, is awarded to entering freshmen, preference to high school graduates from Panhandle High School who have a minimum 85 GPA, with class rank, ACT/SAT scores considered and leadership abilities demonstrated. This scholarship is renewable to the recipient who maintains a 2.5 GPA and carries a minimum course load of 12 hours per semester.
Lt. Col. John Regal Semper Fi Scholarship was established by members of Kilo-3-1 veterans group to honor Regal, who graduated with a B.S. degree in agriculture. Recipient must be a graduate from an Amarillo or Canyon Independent School District high school with preference given based on need.
Residence Hall Scholarship was established to enable the University to enroll and retain high-academic, specially talented and minority students. Scholarships range from $100 to $500 per semester and are awarded only to students who reside in University housing.
Jack Duncan Rhodes Scholarship was established in memory of Jack who lived in Amarillo all of his life and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Jack enjoyed so many things in life, especially playing his guitars and spending time with family and friends. The recipient must be a full-time junior or senior psychology, social work, or music therapy major. Will consider part-time graduate student majoring in psychology, social work, school counseling, or licensed professional counselor with preference to full-time enrollment. Also, the recipient must volunteer at The Hope and Healing Place. Additionally, finalists will be interviewed by the Rhodes Foundation & Hope and Healing Place Committee. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
James M. and Sarah Wade Rockwell Scholarship was established by the Rockwell Foundation Inc. in memory of the Rockwells. Annual income from the fund is awarded to deserving students, taking into consideration academic ability, personal character and financial circumstances.
Paul and Amy Romine Scholarship for Entering Freshmen was established by Mr. and Mrs. Glen Parkey to honor, Mrs. Parkey’s parents, Paul and Amy Romine. Recipients must reside in the Panhandle Region; must be in the top 25 percent of their high school class, academically; must be a first-generation student; must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher; must complete a minimum of 12 hours each semester; and must take and pass the College Success Course or its equivalent the first semester of their freshman year. From their sophomore year forward, recipients must be involved in extracurricular activities on campus, such as community service, leadership in campus organization, fraternities or sororities.
Rural Electric Cooperative Scholarship was established by rural electric cooperatives. Recipient must be a full-time student in the engineering program, Department of Agricultural Sciences or College of Business. Preference will be given based on merit.
Odus and Nell Rush Scholarship was established in 2012. Odus and Nell lived the majority of their lives in Quay County, New Mexico, on a farm near Forrest. They believed that higher education was important and encouraged and financially supported their family in continuing their education, many attended WT. The family decided that it was only fitting to pass along the tradition established by Odus ad Nell and provide scholarship opportunities to other deserving students. Recipients must be from New Mexico and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Paulus F. Schroeter Leadership Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide scholarships to high school graduates with preference to students from the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Students are required to have a grade point average of at least 85 and to demonstrate leadership. Class rank and ACT/SAT test scores will be considered. The scholarship is renewable provided recipient maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA and enrolls in a minimum of 12 hours per semester.
Sigman Family Scholarship Fund was established to honor their grandmother, Oma, who was widowed with nine children during the 1930s and ‘40s. In order to sustain the family, she opened and operated a boarding house for students who attended West Texas A&M University. Recipient must be an entering freshman enrolled 15 hours per semester with a minimum 2.6 GPA. Additionally, the recipient must live on campus in a dual-occupancy student residence for both long semesters. Recipient should be from a farming or ranching background in one of the 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle; Canyon and Amarillo communities will be exempt from consideration. Scholarships will be awarded to students in the following programs: agriculture (three), education (two), military veteran or child of veteran or reservist (one), business administration (one), wildlife biology (one) and nursing (one). The scholarship is renewable for two years as long as the student is making satisfactory progress toward a degree.
Southwestern Public Service Leadership Fund Scholarship was established in 1996 to provide scholarships to encourage and enable high school seniors upon graduation to enroll and continue their education. Preference for high school graduates from the northernmost Texas Panhandle counties. Barton Russell Spurlock Scholarship was created from funds donated by friends of Spurlock to assist students who demonstrate a legitimate need.
Staff and Faculty Endowed Scholarship was established initially from a gift from the WTAMU Foundation and additional funds are from donations, gifts and fund-raising events. Recipient must apply for tuition assistance, be a budgeted WTAMU employee (listed by name in the approved operating budget) regardless of percent of effort or length of appointment, be a full-time employee with an original hire date at WTAMU if the employee falls in an outsourced department working for WT (if employee leaves position after outsource and later returns, they are no longer eligible for tuition assistance), take more than three credit hours during the semester in which they received the scholarship, have a 3.0 GPA for an undergraduate degree and 3.5 GPA and above for a graduate degree and must be following a degree plan to complete the degree. Preference will be given to employees pursuing first baccalaureate or master’s level degree and those demonstrating leadership as well as campus and/or community involvement.
Albessa Stephenson Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to full-time (15 hour per semester) students who maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA.
Sunray Co-op Scholarship Endowment was established in 2011 to financially assist students. Sunray Co-op has been the grain industry leader in the Texas Panhandle serving members from Dallam, Hansford, Hartley, Moore, Texas, and Sherman counties. Recipients must be graduates from high schools in these counties with preference given to students who maintain a 2.5 GPA and those who demonstrate financial hardship.
Zelda Morgan Sweet Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Jason Sweet in memory of his mother, Zelda Morgan Sweet. Recipient will be a full-time undergraduate student from Oklahoma, must have participated in a high school varsity sport and have a “B” average or 3.0 GPA.
AJ Swope Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends of Swope. Swope was a WTAMU graduate and local musician who expressed his passion of life through the art of songwriting. The recipient must be a junior or senior who has maintained an overall 3.0 GPA. Applicants will be required to submit an independently written song by video or audio recording along with the written lyrics of the song. If video, please submit a DVD in order to play on a home DVD player. If audio, submit as MP3. Also, a cover letter must accompany the video or audio recording. Talon/LPE Scholarship (formerly Talon/LPE Environmental Science Scholarship) was established by Talon/LPE, an environmental consulting and engineering business. The company operates across the region with offices in Amarillo, Midland, Austin, New Braunfels, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Hobbs, N.M., with more than 25 percent of the company’s workforce graduates of WTAMU. Recipient must be a full-time (12 semester hours) undergraduate or graduate student with a minimum “B” equivalent grade point average. Preference will be given to employees and children or grandchildren of employees of Talon/LPE regardless of major. If no employees, children or grandchildren of employees are eligible, one or more awards will be given to students majoring in environmental science, engineering, geology, and business administration disbursed equally between the four programs in stated order.
Tascosa Lions Club Scholarship was established in 2013 by the Tascosa Lions Club of Amarillo, Texas, to support deserving students attending WTAMU. The recipient must be a first-generation college student ranked in the top 25 percent of his/her high school graduating class with a 3.0 GPA or high school equivalent. Preference will be given based on need.
Kim and Clay Teter AC Transfer Student Scholarship was established by the Teters from Nashville, Tennessee, who attended Tascosa High School, when to Amarillo College and transferred to WT for completion of their degrees. Having recognized the value of the partnership between AC and WT, they would like to help other AC students attend WT. Recipients must be junior transfer students from Amarillo campuses of Amarillo College, open to all majors, and have a 2.75 GPA. The scholarship is renewable for one additional year as long as the student maintains the GPA requirement.
Texas Panhandle Builders Association Scholarship was established by the Texas Panhandle Builders Association to award scholarships to deserving students. Recipient must have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to junior, senior, or graduate business or engineering majors, students with financial need, students from the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle, Texas Panhandle Builders Association members and TPBA family members.
3 Star Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of C.M. Kuhlman, Jody Hart and Todd Fincher who tragically lost their lives in 1996. The three men were all avid ropers and supporters of the world of rodeo. Recipient must be an incoming freshman, current student or transfer student enrolled full time and must be a participant in the West Texas Timed Event Championship or a student assisting with operations of the event.
Todd Family Memorial Scholarship was established as a gift from Sybil R. Todd as a memorial to her parents T.C. and Rowena Todd and her sister Mary Ann Todd Palmer. Recipients will be students from Amarillo who commute to campus and have financial need.
Toot’n Totum Endowed Scholarship was established in 2013 as a part of a multi-year commitment to the Share Your Pride campaign. Recipient must be a full-time entering freshman or transfer student in good standing with preference to dependents of employees of Toot’n Totum. Additionally, preference will be given to students from the communities of Amarillo, Borger, Dumas, Dalhart, Stratford, Pampa, and Perryton. Recipient must submit a biographical essay including goals and interests and send via email attachment to scholarships@wtamu.edu.
Tuition Assistance Fund Scholarship was established in 1999 by WTAMU Staff Council and funded through the President’s Office to provide tuition assistance to all full-time budgeted WTAMU employees (listed by name in the approved operating budget) or a dependent of defined employees; also retirees and their dependents. Recipient must be following a degree plan and be in good academic standing with the university. University online scholarship application must be submitted along with the tuition assistance application which may be obtained in the Office of Personnel Services.
Lila Vars Scholarship was established by the Division of Enrollment Management and Scholarship Services to honor Vars for more than 36 years of dedicated service to WTAMU. Recipients must be incoming freshmen in the top 25 percent of their high school class or have a high ACT or SAT test score; transfer and continuing students must have a 2.5 or higher GPA. Demonstration of need and leadership may be considered.
Bennie Donald Vittrup Scholarship Fund was originally endowed by a gift from the Vittrup estate as well as family and friends. Recipients must be incoming freshmen who have at least a “B” average from accredited high schools in Texas.
E. Paul and Helen Buck Waggoner Foundation Scholarship was established to provide scholarships and financial assistance to employees, spouses of employees and or/dependents of employees of the W.T. Waggoner Estate. Recipient must be an employee, spouse of an employee, or employee dependent of the W.T. Waggoner Estate; enrolled full time (12 hours per semester); and maintain a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Merle Walker Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Walker and is awarded annually to a graduate of Idalou High School. Recipient must be in the top quarter of their graduating class with a minimum 23 ACT or 950 SAT and must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA as a continuing student.
Frank Warren/Brumley Leadership Scholarship, established in 1993 by gifts from the Brumley Foundation, is awarded to entering freshmen graduating from high schools in the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. The recipient must have a minimum 85 grade average, demonstrate leadership qualities with class rank and ACT/SAT scores considered. This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA and carries a minimum course load of 12 hours per semester.
Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. Scholarship (formerly Norwest Bank, Canyon, Texas, N.A. Scholarship) was established in 1992 to provide scholarship opportunities for WTAMU students. Recipients must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA and full-time enrollment status (12 hours per semester). Entering freshmen must have ACT scores of 22 or higher.
C. Mark and J’Lynn Newman Wheeler Family Foundation Mentoring Scholarship at WTAMU was established by the Wheeler family. The Wheelers fund a mentoring scholarship in Midland College. Their decision to fund a similar scholarship at WTAMU was based on their desire to offer their Midland College recipients an opportunity to continue their education and to do so at their alma mater. Recipient must be a first generation student demonstrating financial need and enrolled full-time (15 hours per semester). First preference will be given to Midland College Wheeler Family Foundation Scholarship recipients with a minimum 2.0 GPA. Second preference to other Midland College or Odessa College transfer students. Also, veterans who meet the above criteria. Third preference to any community college transfer student meeting criteria. Recipients will meet with the Wheelers every two months for mentoring and encouragement.
K. Roger Williams Leadership Scholarship was established in 2007 in honor of Williams’ birthday. Williams is the site leader of the Bell Helicopter Textron aircraft assembly facility in Amarillo, Texas, and has served on the WTAMU Foundation Board. He was also instrumental in getting the support necessary to establish a degree in mechanical engineering at WTAMU. Recipient must be a business, nursing, or engineering major with a 2.8 GPA and must be a child of a current at Bell Helicopter’s Amarillo facility. Preference will be given to graduates of Texas Panhandle high schools.
Bob Wills Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by gifts from Charles and Mary Townsend who knew and loved Wills and provides scholarships for honor scholars or outstanding students who need financial assistance.
Gillespie Wilson Scholarship was established by board members of the Gillespie Wilson Scholarship Foundation to continue the support that was provided to them by Wilson, founder of the WTAMU branch of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and mentor to the men. Athletics, Education, Agriculture, Art, Communication, and Theatre students will be considered. Recipients must be enrolled full time and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. Students must reflect the diversity of WTAMU and be active in the University and community.
Hazel Kelley Wilson Leadership Scholarship was established in 1995 to provide scholarships to transfer students with 60 hours, 30 hours from Amarillo College. Students must have a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate leadership. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
WTAMU Fore County Golf Scramble Scholarship is funded by the proceeds of the annual WTAMU Fore County Golf Scramble held in Hereford, TX. Recipients must be graduates of a high school in Deaf Smith, Parmer, Oldham or Castro counties. Preference will be given to at least one recipient from each county per year who is a sophomore, junior, or senior student in the Department of Agricultural Sciences with need.
WT Homecoming Committee Scholarship was established in 2007 and is funded by proceeds of the Homecoming Classic Golf Tournament and was originally created with matching funds from the Milam Estate. Recipient must be a sophomore or higher and have a minimum 2.75 GPA. Preference will be based on campus involvement. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
WTAMU Endowment for Excellence Scholarship was established in 1984 and provides scholarships for students enrolled in at least 12 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 24 semester hours per year. Additionally, the student must maintain a 3.0 GPA and provide leadership and service to the University and community. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
WTAMU Institutional (WTI) Scholarship provides scholarships to recruit top students. Academic, need and leadership will be considered.
WTAMU Presidential Need Based Scholarship was established to attract and retain students at WTAMU. The recipient must be an undergraduate first-degree seeking student. Consideration will be given to helping students in need. Additionally, consideration will be given to high school attended and other special circumstances, such as first generation.
WTAMU Staff Leadership Scholarship provides scholarships to encourage and enable spouses, children and grandchildren of WTAMU staff members to enroll and continue their education at WTAMU. Recipient must be high school graduate or undergraduate, and selection is competitive with a minimum 85 GPA, class rank, ACT/SAT scores, work experience and leadership qualities. This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA and carries a minimum course load of 12 hours per semester.
WTAMU Transfer Student Honor Scholarship Fund was established in 1981 by income from the University telephone campaign. Recipients must be transfer students from a two-year accredited college with a 3.3 or higher GPA based on the WTAMU official calculation of hours. Preference given to Phi Theta Kappa members, must show proof of membership.
WTAMU Tuition Breaks for Part-Time Students provide tuition scholarships for part-time students attending WTAMU.
Scholarships Administered by the Office of Student Affairs
ATO Leadership Scholarship (formerly the Glen and Pat Parkey Endowment Fund) was established in 1997 by Glen and Pat Parkey and funded by friends and family of the Parkeys’ to provide scholarships for members of Zeta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.
Harland and Peggy D. Collins Endowed Scholarship was established in 2011 by the Collins to help physically disabled students attend WTAMU and pursue their academic endeavors. The scholarship is open to any student with a visual or hearing impairment and/or other severe physical disability wishing to pursue a degree at WTAMU. The student must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Ruth Cross Scholarship, established in 1969 by the Association for Women Students, provides scholarships to deserving students pursuing a degree in teaching and to honor Cross for her dedicated service to WTAMU. Financial need will be the primary qualification, with a preference given to a student committed to a career in teaching. The recipient must live in a residence hall, have a minimum of 30 hours credit at WTAMU, maintain a 2.0 GPA and full-time enrollment status (12 hours per semester).
L.V. Currey Honor Scholarship was established in memory of Currey by family and friends during the 50th anniversary of the Eta Delta Chapter of Sigma Nu at WTAMU. Recipient must be a member in good standing of the Eta Delta Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Judge Garland Green Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002 by the children of Green (1920-2001), who served as county judge of Hartley County for 28 years, 1950-1978, and was never opposed for reelection. He also served as ex-officio superintendent of schools for the county and was heavily involved with the county education process. Upon his death in December 2001, his family decided that a scholarship in his name would be the best way to perpetuate the memory of Green and his good works by assisting selected students with the financial burdens of college education. The student must be a member of Gamma Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order at WTAMU; member participation and financial need will be considered. The chosen recipient must submit a 500 word paper on the life and time of Judge Green.
Dr. Robert Gulde Wellness Scholarship provides scholarships for sophomore through senior Peer Educators.
Mary and Bill Hill Leadership Scholarship (formerly Mary Hill Recreation Club Scholarship) is awarded to the peer educator who is of sophomore, junior or senior standing with a 2.7 GPA or higher and who demonstrates a positive lifestyle with high moral values and practices “holistic wellness.”
Hispanic Student Association of WTAMU Scholarship was established in 1997 to provide scholarships for WTAMU students involved in the Hispanic Association. Student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours per semester and maintain a 2.7 GPA. Additionally, student must show financial need and have at least one parent of Hispanic lineage. Preference given to active Hispanic Association members who have been active participants for at least one semester. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
W. Mitch Jones Residential Living Scholarship was established in 1992 by students to honor 1925 WTAMU graduate, coach and Dean of Men “Mitch” Jones and to assist residential living students at WTAMU. Recipients must live in a residence hall, be at least a sophomore in good standing, have residential living involvement, be a full-time student and maintain at least a cumulative 2.75 GPA.
Kappa Delta Chi, Eta Chapter Scholarship was established by charter members of the Eta Alumnae Chapter of the sorority. The purpose of Kappa Delta Chi is to promote the values of unity, honesty, integrity, and leadership among women at colleges and universities. Applicants must be current active members of Kappa Delta Chi and must have been active for two consecutive semesters prior to receiving the award. Additionally, they must have held an office or committee chair, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, and completed 50 service hours.
Jack B. Kelley Leadership Scholarship was originally endowed by gifts from the Jack B. Kelley family. Recipients must be active members of student organizations and previous officers of major campus committees. Also, recipient must be a full time undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a major of his or her choice. The student must have completed one long (fall or spring) semester at WTAMU and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Eric Lathrop Memorial Scholarship for Students with Disabilities is provided by Buffs Unlimited, the handicapped students’ association. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of six hours and maintain a 2.0 GPA. If not registered with Student Disabilities Services (SDS), student must provide documentation of disability to the SDS office. With the application, submit an essay on “How have you overcome the challenges of your disabilities?” and send via email attachment to scholarships@wtamu.edu.
LEAD WT Endowed Scholarship was established in 2012 by the Division of Student Affairs for the newly created Leadership Education and Development (LEAD WT) program. Recipients will be students selected to enter or continue in the LEAD WT program. The scholarship is renewable for up to four semesters.
Saundra Meek Scholarship Fund was established in 1984 by students, friends and associates of Meek as a tribute to her dedicated efforts for WTAMU students. Scholarships are given to full-time junior, senior or graduate students who maintain a cumulative 2.75 GPA. Recipients must have attended WTAMU the previous fall semester, be active in campus student organizations and possess the pride and dedication to WTAMU as exemplified by Meek. With the application, student must submit an essay on “Why did you choose to be involved in non-academic activities during your collegiate career?” and send via email attachment to scholarships@wtamu.edu.
Gary A. Milton Scholarship was established by Sigma Nu alumni during the 50th anniversary of the Eta Delta Chapter of Sigma Nu at WTAMU. Recipient must be a member of the Eta Delta Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Annette F. and Garry L. Nall Endowed Scholarship was established by Garry and Annette Nall to provide scholarships for members of Zeta Zeta Chapter, Delta Zeta Sorority, or Gamma Sigma Chapter, Kappa Alpha Order and/or members of their families. Preference is first given to students who are initiated members (old and new) of Zeta Zeta Chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority, second preference to Gamma Sigma Chapter, Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity and third, to members of families of either sorority or fraternity member. Also, preference shall be given based on need. Recipient must have completed at least one regular semester at WTAMU, be continuously enrolled as a full-time student and maintain at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
Garry L. and Annette F. Nall Endowed Scholarship was established in 1991 to honor Dr. and Mrs. Nall for their service to WTAMU. Preference is first given to students who are initiated members (old and new) of Gamma Sigma Chapter, Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity, second preference to Zeta Zeta Chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority and third, to members of families of either the fraternity or sorority. Also, preference shall be given based on need. Phi Delta Theta Leadership Scholarship was established in 2009 to assist students who are members of Texas Theta chapter of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity or children of members of Texas Theta chapter of Phi Delta Theta. Preference may be given based on grade point average and hours enrolled.
President’s Community Service Award Recipients Scholarship was established in 1999 to honor President’s Community Service Award recipients and to provide scholarships for worthy WTAMU students. Recipients must be currently enrolled in a minimum of six semester hours and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Additionally, community service as demonstrated on the scholarship application will be the primary selection criterion.
Scholarship for Single Parent was established in 2003 by Daniel and Myrna Raffkind to assist single parents in reaching their educational goals. Recipient must be a full-time student (12 semester hours) and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Financial need will be considered.
Mike Stephens ATO Scholarship was established by Glen Parkey and friends of Mike Stephens in 2004. Recipient must be a member of the Zeta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.
Student Government Endowment Scholarship-Internship was established in 1998 to provide internships to WTAMU students. Recipients must have attended WTAMU one semester, be enrolled full-time (12 hours undergraduate; six hours graduate) and maintain a 2.25 GPA. Students must submit a one-page essay describing the internship in which they are applying for, submit one recommendation letter from faculty adviser sponsoring internship and include on the scholarship application a list of other scholarships received for the year.

Student Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 1997 to provide scholarships in the names of deceased WTAMU students. Recipients must be undergraduate students of at least sophomore standing, maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA with full-time enrollment status (12 hours per semester), be in good standing with the University and be involved in campus activities.
Students Assisting “N” Good Endeavors Community Service Scholarship was established by WTAMU student members of SAGE to recognize and reward an incoming freshman for their community involvement, leadership and extracurricular activities. Recipient must be an entering freshman in the fall semester and have a 3.0 GPA. Additionally, they must be involved in their community, have leadership qualities and participate in extracurricular activities. Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation and a one-page typed essay describing community service activities that they have participated in and how the activities have impacted their life. Texas Zeta Chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Society offers several small scholarships based on available funds. Scholarship recipients must be juniors or seniors who are members of Alpha Chi.
Charles R. and Mary Townsend Scholarship was established in 1992 to honor Dr. and Mrs. Townsend for their love and service to the students at WT. The Townsends motivate leadership through support of Chi Omega as well as through involvement in the classroom, extracurricular activities and events such as the WT Rodeo. Recipient must be a Chi Omega officer, leadership and scholarship will be considered for final selection.
Zeta Tau Alpha Academic Achievement Endowment Fund was established in 1991 by Linda Elliott and members of Zeta Tau Alpha to reward academic achievement of active members of the sorority. Recipient must be enrolled full-time (12 hours per semester) and have a cumulative grade point average equal to or greater than the all-University grade point average during the preceding spring semester and returning to WTAMU the following fall.
Scholarships Administered by the WTAMU Alumni Association
Richard Anderson Bowling Scholarship was established by Anderson’s family and friends upon his death in October 2003. Anderson attended the University and was a member of the bowling team, continuing his involvement with the team even as a former student. The scholarship is awarded to a current member of the University Bowling Team who has completed at least 30 hours, sophomore or higher standing, and is in good academic standing with the University. Preference will be given to male students who are originally from outside the state of Texas. If no male student fits the criteria, a woman on the University Bowling Team will be considered.
Susan Babcock Harp Leadership Scholarship and Ring Award was established by Harp’s family and friends, as well as the WTAMU Alumni Association, upon her death in November 1998. Harp was a 1995 graduate of WTAMU and a former student body president. She also served as treasurer of the board of directors of the WTAMU Alumni Association. The scholarship and ring award recognizes a current female student who has completed her sophomore year at WTAMU and excel academically and in leadership activities. She must embody qualities that include active membership and leadership roles in student organizations, a strong commitment to WTAMU and high character traits, including Christian faith, loyalty, fairness in all dealings, dedication to duty and love of fellow humans.
Hicks Scholarship Alumni TAMF was established by Dr. Andy and Sue Ann Hicks in 1995. The scholarship honors the Hicks family and provides scholarships to undergraduate transfer students from a junior college. Preference to transfer students from Amarillo College, Frank Phillips College, Clarendon College, Howard College and South Plains College. Selection is based on academic achievement.
Bill and Peggy Pollart, JoLynn Grieser Memorial Scholarship was established in May 2000 by Penny Pollart in memory of her parents and sister. Recipients must have a 2.5 GPA and be a full-time (12 hours per semester) undergraduate student. Additionally, the student must exhibit leadership qualities and demonstrated involvement in student organizations and campus events and activities, exhibit exuberant enthusiasm and love for WTAMU, is a positive role model for students, and display strong moral values and Christian principles. It is the desire of the donor that the recipient become a member of the WTAMU Alumni Association upon graduation from the University and that a demonstrated level of giving back to the University be apparent.
Student Alumni Board General Scholarship Endowment awards scholarships to students that have completed 60 hours of college credit, currently enrolled, completed at least one semester at WTAMU, show campus involvement and spirit, and have a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to a child of a WTAMU graduate, a child of a member of the WTAMU Alumni Board of Directors, and/or a member of the Student Alumni Board. Special consideration to students who have lost a parent due to death.

College of Agriculture, Science and Engineering
ASE Annual Fund-Scholarship was established to assist the College of Agriculture, Science, and Engineering with various activities including scholarship awards. Scholarship recipients must be majors in the College of Agriculture, Science, and Engineering.
Greater Texas Foundation-Cowboy Roundup USA Removing Educational Barriers Scholarship was established by Cowboy Roundup USA in partnership with the Greater Texas Foundation to support a student, preferably from a ranch family, pursuing a college education. Agriculture Education Leadership Scholarship was established by Jason Cantrell. Recipient must be an agriculture education major; preference to students from Hansford, Castro and Swisher counties.
Sam Attebury Memorial Ag Scholarship was established in 2012 by friends and family of Attebury to honor his memory and passion for agriculture. Recipient must be an agriculture major.
Henry Bassett Agriculture Scholarship was established in 1998 by friends and family of Bassett to provide scholarships for full-time (12 semester hours) students in the Department of Agricultural Sciences. The student must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Greg Black Memorial Ag Scholarship was established in 2007 by Herschel and Ruth Black in honor of their son, Greg, who was a graduate of West Texas State University and area development manager for Deaf Smith Rural Electric. He was active in his community and civic activities as well as the First Baptist Church. Recipient must be a full-time student in the Department of Agricultural Sciences.
Roy Bryan Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide scholarships for worthy and deserving junior or senior agriculture students with a 3.0 GPA.
Chair in Cow-Calf Management Scholarship was established by an anonymous gift to aid WTAMU in supporting the cow-calf and range cattle industry in the Texas Panhandle and surrounding areas. Recipient must be a full-time student majoring in agriculture with preference to students interested in the cow-calf and range cattle industry.
J.W. and Dorothy Clark Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003 by their son, Dr. James R. Clark, and his wife, Barbara, to provide scholarships to sophomore through senior students majoring in one of the areas in the Department of Agricultural Sciences. Students must have 2.5 GPA and a financial need.
James Clark First Choice Scholarship was established in 2008 as a general scholarship fund and in 2010 was renamed to honor Dr. James Clark, dean of the College of Agriculture, Science and Engineering for his service to WTAMU. Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student in the Department of Agricultural Sciences. Preference will be given based on need.
Norman and Gladys Cleavinger Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family of the Cleavingers to provide scholarships to declared junior or senior majoring in one of the fields of agriculture. Students must be involved in campus and community activities and have financial need.
COBA/Select Sires Scholarship was established to benefit students in the Agriculture Department at WTAMU that come from a dairy farm background. The recipient must be a student in the Department of Agriculture, any major, and must have a dairy farm background.
Cole Agriculture Scholarship was established from an initial gift of Noel Andy Cole. Scholarship recipient must be a full-time student majoring in agriculture with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Financial need will be considered.
Coleman Associates Agricultural Endowment Fund-Scholarship was established to award scholarships to full-time students in the Department of Agricultural Sciences.
David C. and Sandra L. Cook Agriculture Scholarship was established in 2013 by David and Sandie of Canadian, TX in honor of Evaline Hardin Cook, David’s mother and a graduate of West Texas State Normal College. David and Sandie operate Cook Farms and Cattle Company and have been long-time supporters of WTAMU. Recipient must be a non-freshman student majoring in agriculture with a minimum 2.5 GPA with preference to students with need.
Cowboy Roundup USA Ranch Management Scholarship was established by Cowboy Roundup USA to support a student from a ranch family. Recipient must be a WTAMU ranch management student and been raised on a ranch.

Norman Crum Memorial Agriculture Fund, established in 1997 by family and friends of Crum, is designed to assist sophomore through senior full-time (12 hours or more per semester) students majoring in agriculture and maintaining an overall 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to descendants of Crum, graduates of Perryton High School and others qualified from the northernmost 26 counties of Texas.
Robert Devin Scholarship was established for students that have been a Randall County 4-H member. He/she must major in an area in the Department of Agricultural Sciences.
S.L. and Mildred Garrison Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide scholarships for worthy and deserving graduate students in agriculture with preference for dryland agriculture or feedlot management. The student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Gladwin Gillispie Scholarship was established in 1993 by Gladwin and Lydia Gillispie through the WTAMU Alumni Association. Recipients must be worthy and deserving agriculture majors, freshmen must be in the top quarter of their graduating class and sophomore-senior students must have a 3.0 GPA. Financial need will be considered.
Bob Givens Memorial Agriculture Scholarship was established in 2000 by friends of Givens to provide scholarships to students majoring in agriculture. Criteria will include a minimum 2.75 GPA and activities.
Gene and Eleanor Glazener Endowed Leadership Scholarship in Agriculture was established from a gift of Eleanor Glazener in memory of her husband, Gene Glazener. Recipient must be majoring in an area of agriculture. (Preference given to a student majoring in agribusiness.) Recipient must be a full-time student (12 semester hours) and a sophomore, junior or senior in standing with a 2.5 GPA overall and 3.0 in their major.
Tommy Grant Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends of Grant to support students at WTAMU. Grant owned and operated Grant Construction beginning in 1984 and served on the executive board of the Tri-State Fairgrounds for over a decade. Recipient must be a full-time student (12 semester hours) in the Department of Agricultural Sciences and must maintain a 3.0 GPA or high school equivalent. Preference will be given to students based on need, participation in 4-H and/or FFA, and children of employees of Grant Construction. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Jimmie Green Scholarship was established in 1974 by former students and friends of Green, professor and head of the department of plant science, to provide an annual scholarship for an outstanding plant science student. Based on scholarship, leadership and/or need.
Spicer Gripp Memorial Scholarship was established by the Spicer Gripp Foundation for an agriculture major with a minimum 2.75 GPA. Student must be active in campus extracurricular activities.
Ralph Harbin Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Harbin who taught animal science courses from 1954-1980. This scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior agricultural major; academic excellence, campus leadership and extracurricular activities, and financial need will be considered.
Vernon H. Harman Endowed Scholarship in Agriculture was established by V.H. Harman in honor of his father, Vernon H. Harman, to provide scholarship support to deserving agriculture students at WTAMU. Recipients must be agriculture majors with preference to students who display leadership and have a desire to impact the agriculture industry.
Susan Babcock Harp Memorial Agriculture Scholarship was established by Harp’s family to recognize and support outstanding students in the Department of Agriculture Sciences. Mrs. Harp was a 1995 graduate of WTAMU and former student body president, as well as, a member of the board of directors of the WTAMU Alumni Association. Scholarship recipient must be a full-time agriculture major with preference to female students majoring in agriculture business and economics or agribusiness. Also, preference will be given based on leadership and campus involvement.
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarships were established in 1980 for students working toward a degree in some phase of agriculture. These scholarships are based on academic excellence.
Dr. Terry A. Howell, Sr. Agriculture Scholarship was established by friends and colleagues of Dr. Howell upon his retirement from USDA-ARS. Scholarship recipient must be a full-time agriculture major.
Tammy Jackson Agriculture Leadership Scholarship was established by Stanley Schaeffer in memory of Jackson, long-time employee and friend. Recipient must be full-time Department of Agriculture Sciences major with a minimum 2.0 GPA with preference to students who demonstrate above-average leadership skills.
Douglas Josserand Memorial Scholarship was established in 1991 by the family of Josserand and is awarded to junior, senior or graduate agribusiness major. Recipient must have completed two regular semesters at WTAMU and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
C.M. and Herbert Kuhlman Beef Cattle Production Scholarship was established by the Kuhlman family. Recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in animal science. Student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students who show interest in pursuing a career in beef cattle production.
C.M. Kuhlman Memorial Provost’s Leadership Scholarship was established in 1996 to honor the memory of Kuhlman and to provide scholarship to WTAMU students in agriculture. Recipient must be an agricultural sciences major with an interest in production agriculture. Additionally, the student must be enrolled a minimum of 15 hours per semester or complete a minimum 30 semester hours per year and maintain a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given based on leadership and service to the University; renewable when criteria are met.
Greg and Denise Mills Memorial Scholarship was established by Cactus Feeders Inc. to provide an annual award to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student majoring in agriculture and/or education with a 2.5 GPA. Priority is given to families of employees of Cactus Feeders Inc. and to graduates of Dumas High School.
Filogomes Alves de Carvalho Neto Memorial Scholarship was established in 2014 by family and friends of Neto, a native of Brazil and a 2008 animal science graduate. Recipients must be full-time animal science majors.
No Borders Scholarship was established to assist with the recruitment of the best and brightest students from coast to coast. Recipients must be sophomore or higher standing majoring in one of the areas in the Department of Agricultural Sciences with preference to students with a 3.3 GPA or higher. Also, preference will be given to students transferring from other higher education institutions outside of the region and continuing students that have previously transferred to WTAMU from another institution.
Panhandle Livestock Association Ben and Nancy McIntyre Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide scholarships to junior, senior and graduate students majoring in agriculture with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA; recipient is expected to attend PLA meetings.
Panhandle Livestock Association Frederic C. Schmidt Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for worthy and deserving junior, senior and graduate students pursuing studies in agriculture with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA; the recipient is expected to attend PLA meetings.
Panhandle-Plains Land Bank Scholarship was established to offer awards for agriculture students from each of the four land bank territories. Panhandle-Plains Land Bank employs a number of WTAMU graduates and is committed to supporting the Texas Panhandle’s University. Recipient must be an agricultural sciences major and graduate from a high school in one of the four territories of the Land Bank. Territories include Pampa (Gray, Roberts, Hutchinson, Hemphill counties), Amarillo (Potter, Randall, Oldham, Carson, Armstrong counties), Perryton (Hansford, Ochiltree, Lipscomb counties) and Plainview (Hale, Briscoe, Floyd, Motley, Hall counties). Preference will be given to seniors, then juniors, then sophomores.
Bill Piehl Agriculture Scholarship was established by Plug Piehl and Puff Piehl Niegos in memory of their father, Bill Piehl. Recipient must be a full-time student in the Department of Agricultural Sciences and maintain a 2.8 GPA or high school equivalent and actively involved in agriculture and/or university activities. Recipient must provide an annual letter recapping their year and sharing future plans. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Dr. John and Kenda Pipkin Endowment for Excellence in Horse Judging Scholarship was established with an initial gift from Dr. Gordon David/CEV Multimedia. The endowment honors long-time Equine program director and horse judging teach coach, Dr. John Pipkin and his wife, Kenda, for their tireless efforts to bring the program to national prominence. Recipient must be a member of the WTAMU horse judging team.
John S. Plank Agricultural Scholarship, established in 1979 by the family of Plank in his memory, is awarded to an agriculture major of at least junior standing. Financial need and scholastic ability are considered.
Rachel Quest Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends in loving memory of Quest, 2004 WTAMU graduate. Quest completed a degree in equine industry and business and was a successful member of the WTAMU Equestrian and Horse Judging Teams. Recipient must be an active, eligible and second-semester or higher member of the WTAMU Equestrian Team or Horse Judging Team; and must have a 2.0 GPA or higher. Preference shall be given to an Equestrian Team member.
Bradley Jay Rickwartz Memorial Scholarship was established by his parents and friends to be awarded to a junior or senior plant science major. The recipient will be from a farm family and demonstrate academic excellence, financial need and leadership activities.
Dr. Bob Robinson Randall County Agriculture Scholarship was endowed by Randall County Commissioner, Dr. Bob Robinson, to benefit students who actively participated in FFA and/or 4-H in Randall County and actively pursuing and agriculture degree at WTAMU. Recipient must be a full-time student in the Department of Agricultural Sciences and an active participant in FFA and/or 4-H in Randall County with preference given to 4-H participants.
Dr. Bob and Cleo Robinson Agriculture Support Fund and Scholarship was established by the Robinsons to assist the Department of Agricultural Sciences with departmental activities including scholarship awards. Scholarship recipients must be agriculture majors.

Dr. Bob and Cleo Robinson Randall County 4-H Gold Star Scholarship was endowed by Randall County Commissioner, Dr. Bob Robinson, to reward recipients of the prestigious gold star awarded by Randall County 4-H. Recipient must be a full-time freshman in the Department of Agricultural Sciences who has received the Randall County 4-H Gold Star.
David Romley Memorial Scholarship was established by Mark Adams of A2 Cattle Feeding Inc. in Dimmitt, Texas, and the Spicer Gripp Memorial Youth Foundation to honor the memory of Romley. Recipient must be a full-time animal science major with preference to students participating in rodeo and students with need.
Smallwood Leadership Scholarship was established in 1978 by the Agriculture Development Association as a tribute to Charles M. Smallwood and his 20 years of outstanding service to WTAMU and Texas agriculture. The scholarship will be awarded to students with at least a 2.5 GPA with outstanding leadership activities.
“Cotton John” Smith Scholarships are awarded to agricultural majors with outstanding scholastic ability.
Southwest Meat Association Meat Science Scholarship was established by the Southwest Meat Association. Recipients must be a sophomore, junior or senior pursuing a degree in animal science and showing an interest in the pursuit of a career in the meat and food sciences. Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Steve W. Steffey Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 by friends and family of Steffey to honor him and to provide a scholarship to a WTAMU student majoring in any degree program in the Department of Agricultural Sciences. Recipient must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
B.A. and Jane Ann Stewart Dryland Agriculture Scholarship was established in 1994 to honor Stewart on his retirement from the USDA Agriculture Research Service Conservation and Production Research Laboratory at Bushland, Texas, and to provide scholarships for agriculture majors with demonstrated interest in dryland agriculture. Preference to graduate students with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
David A. Swinford Agriculture Scholarship was established by the Amarillo Republican Women along with friends, family and supporters of Representative David Swinford to honor his years of service to the people of the Texas Panhandle and the state of Texas. Recipient must be a full-time student in the Department of Agricultural Sciences.
Ronald and Anne Thomason Scholarship was established by David and Mark Thomason in honor of their father and mother, Dr. Ronald Thomason and Anne Thomason. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in one of the disciplines offered by the Department of Agricultural Sciences. Entering freshmen with a high school 2.5 GPA will be eligible, and other undergraduate students must have a 3.0 GPA to be eligible. Preference shall be given to students that demonstrate leadership ability; renewable if criteria are met.
Dr. Ronald C. Thomason Plant Science Scholarship was established from an anonymous gift in honor of Dr. Ronald C. Thomason for his long years of service to WTAMU. This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student majoring in agriculture with an emphasis in plant production. A 3.0 GPA or “B” average is desirable.
Rusty Tinnin/Bell Ranch Working Cowboy Scholarship was established in memory of Johnnie Dwayne (Rusty) Tinnin, who was born in Floydada, Texas, and dedicated his entire life to the ranching business in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Tinnin was a 1962 graduate of West Texas State College (WTAMU) with a degree in animal science. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was very involved in various civic and business organizations. The recipient must be an agriculture major currently living or working on a working ranch or grew up on a working ranch. The student must maintain a 2.5 overall GPA; renewable.
Floyd and “B” Tomlinson Scholarship was established in 1978 by the family of Floyd and “B” Tomlinson as a tribute to their contribution to the Canyon community and to Texas agriculture. The scholarship provides funds to students who wish to pursue a career in agriculture and is awarded based on scholarship, need and/or leadership.
Jack H. and Ruth Mary Whitson Scholarship was established in honor of Jack and Ruth Mary Whitson by their children. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who graduated from high school in Dallam, Sherman, Hansford, Ochiltree, Lipscomb, Hemphill, Roberts, Hutchinson, Moore or Hartley County. Recipient must be an entering freshman and have a “B” average or higher from their high school and may not be eligible for federal or state educational grants. Renewable if criteria are met.
Dr. Donald L. Williams Agriculture Scholarship was established by Williams, a native of White Deer, Texas, and graduate of WTAMU. Williams began teaching at WTAMU in 1973 and educated students from the Texas Panhandle and High Plains area for 34 years. In 1985, he began a student travel program which gave local agriculture students the opportunity to visit New York, Chicago and various European destinations. He is also the long-time adviser of the Agribusiness Club and coach of the Agribusiness Quiz Bowl Team. Recipient must be enrolled a minimum of 12 hours per semester, maintain a cumulative 2.2 GPA, be a student in the Department of Agricultural Sciences and have graduated from a high school in the Texas Panhandle. Preference shall be given based on need, students majoring in agricultural business and economics, students involved in leadership activities on campus and in the community, and students working a minimum of 20 hours per week. This scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Leonard Wilson Excellence Award was established by the Wilson family in memory of Dr. Wilson who taught nearly every Plant Science course along with graduate level statistics and served on countless graduate committees before his retirement from WTAMU in 1994. Recipient must be an outstanding senior Plant Science major with consideration given for academic achievement and proven leadership skills.
Ed and Patrecia Wright Agriculture Support Fund and Scholarship was established by the generosity of the Wrights, supporters of WT athletics and agriculture for more than two decades. Program funds will be used to support departmental activities including scholarship awards. Scholarship recipients must be agriculture majors.
WTAMU Rodeo Club Program Fund and Scholarship was established to assist active participants of the WTAMU rodeo team.
School of Engineering and Computer Science
Amarillo Gear Company Scholarship was established in 2000 to encourage students pursuing engineering studies at WTAMU and to support growth of the program. The company continued its support and has increased the amount of the scholarship award over time. Recipient must be a junior or senior engineering major, including engineering technology and computer science with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Lyndol Bynum Carter, P.E. Civil Engineering Scholarship was established by Carter, a retired civil engineer whose business endeavors included Southwest Prestressed Concrete, Inc. in Amarillo. Recipient must be a full-time junior or senior civil engineering major and must be a U.S. citizen with proof of citizenship.
Mary Harris Clark Memorial Scholarship was established and endowed by Dr. Barry Clark in memory of his mother, Mary Harris Clark. Student is required to major in engineering.
ECS Textbook Scholarship was established by faculty and staff of the Engineering and Computer Science department as a part of the “I AM WT” Faculty/staff annual giving campaign. The recipient must be a full-time student in the School of Engineering and Computer Science.
Education Credit Union Engineering Scholarship (formerly known as Engineering Scholarship) was created in 2009 to support a growing need for resources to build a comprehensive engineering program at WTAMU. Recipient must be a full-time engineering major and have a 2.5 GPA or the high school equivalent.
Engineering-Engineering Tech Scholarship was initially created by a gift from the Amarillo Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute. Recipient must be a full-time engineering or engineering technology major. Preference will be given based on academic performance.
Fred and Edith Haiduk Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by H. Paul Haiduk to honor his parents’ innovation and leadership in agriculture, engineering and humanitarian causes. Fred and Edith Haiduk were strong supporters of higher education and were amazed at the contributions of computer science. The award is given to the outstanding freshman computer science student. Recipient must have completed six hours of computer science courses by the end of his or her freshman year with a 3.5 GPA overall and within computer science.
Robert D. Hollingsworth Scholarship in Engineering Technology was established by Robert D. Hollingsworth who received a national award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials for his innovative changes made to existing road equipment which helped to establish the scholarship. Recipients must be a graduate student in engineering technology, enrolled at least 12 hours of graduate engineering technology courses and maintain a 3.5 or above GPA.
Johnson Controls Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships to deserving students in engineering technology. Recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior engineering technology major, maintain full-time (12 or more hours per semester) enrollment status and an overall 2.75 GPA.
James S. Kone & Company Scholarships, established Preference will be given to current employees and dependents of employees of J. Shehan Engineering.in 1991, offer a $500 scholarship each semester to a junior, senior or graduate student majoring in engineering technology and having attended WTAMU for two semesters with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
McCoy Myers and Associates Internship Program Fund and Scholarship was established to provide enhanced educational opportunities, direct work experience, and financial support for students at WTAMU. Scholarships are awarded to “interns in good standing” with McCoy Myers and Associates.
Mechanical Engineering Scholarship/Program Support was established by donations given by area businesses, foundations and friends of WTAMU. Endowment will provide the scholarship and support for program expenses. The recipient must be a student majoring in engineering (any discipline), engineering technology, or computer science.
James E. Moreland Industrial Safety Endowment Fund was established in 1981 by the Panhandle Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers in memory of Moreland. The scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding junior, senior or graduate engineering technology student seeking a career in the field of industrial safety.
Dr. Jim Rogers Environmental Science Scholarship was established to support students majoring in environmental science with preference to students with financial need.
Bill and Betty Semmelbeck Engineering Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. William E. Semmelbeck to help students focus on engineering studies. Mr. Semmelbeck taught in the College of Business and retired with the rank of professor emeritus of business. Recipients must be majoring in pre-engineering, engineering tech or engineering, and based primarily on need.
Sharyland Utilities Engineering Scholarship was established by Sharyland Utilities to promote and support the rapidly growing School of Engineering and Computer Science. The recipient must be a full-time engineering or pre-engineering major with a minimum 3.5 GPA or high school equivalent. Additionally, the student must be a graduate from a high school in Oldham, Potter, Carson, Armstrong, Randall, Deaf Smith, Castro, Swisher, Briscoe, Floyd, Motely, or Dickens County.
J. Shehan Engineering Scholarship was established in 2007 by Keys and Shehan Engineering, L.L.C., and renamed in 2010. J. Shehan Engineering, P.C. (JSE), is a Texas professional corporation whose primary business is civil engineering design and planning in the state of Texas. Shehan has been very supportive of the engineering program at WTAMU and continues to support and guide the growth of the program. Recipient must be enrolled a minimum of 12 hours per semester, be a civil engineering major and maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Scholarship was established in 1991 and is awarded to an engineering technology major who is a student member in SME. The $200 scholarship is awarded in the spring semester.
Donald Sopher Scholarship was established by family and friends of Sopher. Recipients must be junior or senior engineering technology majors with a 3.0 GPA.
Xcel Energy Foundation Endowed Scholarship in Engineering was established in 2009 by the Excel Energy Foundation. Recipient must be an undergraduate engineering major with a cumulative 2.5 GPA.
Department of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Dr. Lacy Caldwell Beckham and Joanne Beckham Memorial Scholarship was established by Beckham friends and family and provides a scholarship for junior and senior students planning a career in medicine with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Biology Activities Account provides scholarships to students enrolled in biology-related programs, as well as entering freshmen.
Dr. John S. Brantley Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 by friends and family of Brantley to provide scholarships for full-time junior or senior premedical majors.
Robert C. and Ada Busteed Scholarship was established by relatives, friends and former students of Robert Busteed. No academic level restriction beyond current enrollment at WTAMU. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on all work completed.
John B. and Mary O. Coleman Scholarship was established in 1993 to provide academic scholarships to students who have completed 30 or more semester hours, maintained a 2.2 GPA and major in pre-dentistry, pre-law, political science or criminal justice.
Cooper Crouse-Hinds Environmental Excellence Scholarship was established to provide a scholarship for a full-time (12 hours per semester) environmental science major in good standing with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Ecological PCL Database Scholarship was created to award scholarships to students actively participating in research.
C.J. Fowlston Scholarship was established by family and friends of Fowlston. Recipient must be an undergraduate geology major or related environmental field who is active in campus affairs and maintains a 2.0 or 3.0 GPA. Additionally, the student must not be a previous recipient of this scholarship.
Shawn Freytag Memorial Scholarship was established by the Southwest Chapter of the American Business Club in Amarillo in memory of Freytag. Junior or senior students working toward a degree in pre-physical therapy may apply.
Geology Excellence Scholarship, established in 1968 by Dr. and Mrs. Franklin Daugherty, is awarded annually to a student(s) majoring in geology.
Dr. Thomas S. and Helen Gerald Scholarship, established by a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Gerald in 1993, is awarded to worthy and deserving full-time junior or senior students who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA overall with preference to students majoring in pre-medicine or pre-dental.
Craig Ray Hamman Memorial Scholarship was established in 1992 by family and friends to provide a $500 annual scholarship for a junior or senior student majoring in geology or related environmental discipline with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Willis E. Harrison, D.D.S. Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for full-time (12 hours per semester) junior or senior pre-dental majors with a cumulative 3.2 GPA; financial need will be the primary consideration.
Tom Kritser Scholarship was established in 1983 by family and friends of Krister. The scholarship will be awarded to junior, senior or graduate students with at least two regular semesters at WTAMU who are planning a career in wildlife management and have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Dr. David Miller Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 by friends and family of Miller to provide a scholarship for a pre-medicine major with a minimum 3.3 GPA of sophomore, junior or senior standing.
Dr. Robert and Dorothy Neblett Scholarship was established by family in honor of Neblett’s long-time contributions to the area in the field of medicine. The scholarship will be awarded to junior or senior students majoring in pre-medicine.
John Phillip Notestine Geology Scholarship was established in 2002 by John and Gail Notestine in honor of their son, Phillip, B.S. 1984, to provide scholarships for full-time returning junior or senior students seeking a bachelor of science degree in geology. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Panhandle Geological Society Endowment Scholarship Fund was established by gifts from the Panhandle Geological Society with scholarships awarded annually to geology and/or geophysics majors planning a career in geology or geophysics.
Dr. Jim Rogers Environmental Science Scholarship was established to support environmental science majors with preference given to student with financial need.
Ron Samuels/IHS Energy Scholarship was established by IHS Energy of Dallas to honor Samuels, a retiring employee of IHS who worked in the energy industry for 40-plus years and a 1965 graduate of WTAMU. Recipient must be a freshman geology major. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Nathan Edward Sauer Memorial Scholarship was established in 1993 by Dr. and Mrs. C. Edward Sauer in memory of their son who passed away in December 1992. Preference will be given to declared pre-medical or pre-dental students originally from the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. Student must have completed 60 hours of college credit and have a 3.5 GPA overall or higher.
Department of Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics
AMI Industrial Machining Scholarship was established in 1991 by Eddie Hamilton, a graduate of the engineering technology department. The $250 scholarship is awarded in the spring semester to an engineering technology major.
Alumni-Faculty Math and Physical Science Endowment was established in 1986 from initial funds donated by mathematics and physical sciences faculty and has since been increased by donations from alumni. Earnings from this fund provide scholarships for students enrolled in the Department of Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.
Robert E. Barieau Research Scholarship was established in 1986 by Barieau and matching funds from Chevron and provides scholarships for full-time students majoring in mathematics, chemistry or physics with preference to students engaged in research projects with the Department of Math, Chemistry, and Physics and/or the Alternative Energy Institute.
Treasure Brasher Endowed Scholarship in the Physical Sciences was established in 2012 by former students in honor of Treasure Brasher, a fun-loving instructor and proud graduate. Brasher taught at WT for many years and was bestowed the honor of Professor Emeritus in 2010. Recipient must be pursuing a major within the Department of Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics with preference given to physics or chemistry majors and students actively participating in AMPS (Association of Math and Physical Science).
Dr. Howard Andrew Chamblin Memorial Physics Scholarship was established by Ed and Caroline Chamblin in honor of their son, Howard Andrew Chamblin. Dr. Chamblin earned a degree in mathematics from Rice University and his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Cambridge University. He was a highly accomplished scholar, and his work was regarded to be among the best in the field. Recipients must be physics majors, enrolled in a physics course each semester and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA.
E.R. “Dutch” and Odessie Cleavinger Award was established in 1995 to provide two math awards annually-one to an outstanding math education major and one to an outstanding junior math major.
Dr. Hollis L. Cook Scholarship was established by friends and family of Cook, retired professor of mathematics and department head at WTAMU. It is awarded to graduate students planning a career in mathematics who have a cumulative 3.0 GPA and 3.5 GPA in math.
Edna Graham Memorial Mathematics Scholarship provides scholarships to mathematics majors or minor. Recipient must have at least 24 hours of mathematics credit before consideration will be given. In considering students of equal rank, preference will be given to the student who has the most hours in mathematics. Additionally, at least 30 hours must be earned at WTAMU before consideration will be given; preference among students of equal rank will be given to those who have done all their work at WTAMU. Recipient must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in mathematics courses, be a good citizen and show good qualities of leadership. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
John Edward Miller Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Miller by friends and family to benefit students majoring in mathematics. Recipient must be a mathematics major enrolled a minimum of 12 hours per semester. Preference will be given based on need.
Fletcher Moseley Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor Moseley, outstanding math instructor at West Texas State University. The recipient must maintain an overall 2.5 GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work in the Department of Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. The student must be an underclassman who shows outstanding achievement in the field of abstract and/or linear algebra.
C.A. Murray Mathematics Scholarship Fund, established in 1970 by Mr. and Mrs. Murray, provides an award for the outstanding female, undergraduate mathematics major each year, as determined by the mathematics faculty.
Douglass Alfred Shirley Scholarship was established in 1995 to honor the memory of Shirley, past WTAMU dean, and to provide scholarships to senior physical science major who has a minimum 3.0 GPA.
College of Business
Malouf and Iris Abraham Business Scholarships are provided from earnings of a $50,000 endowment furnished by the Abrahams for business majors planning a business career. Recipient must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Amarillo Executive Association Scholarship was established by the Amarillo Executive Association, an association of business owners and representatives in Amarillo. The association’s members, past and present, have provided invaluable leadership guidance to the community. The scholarship was established to encourage and support students seeking a degree from WTAMU so that they might carry on the tradition of leadership. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in the College of Business with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to dependents of active members of the association. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
The Phillip and Anna Mae Andrews Scholarship was created in 2013 to honor the memory of Phillip and Anna Mae and generously support students in need at WTAMU. Recipients must demonstrate financial need with preference to College of Business majors.
Mildred Bassett Business Scholarship was established in 1998 by Bassett’s family and friends to provide scholarships for full-time (12 hours per semester) students in the College of Business who maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Sharon Brown Leadership Scholarship was established by friends and associates of Brown in appreciation of her many years of service at the Boatman’s Bank and to provide scholarships to WTAMU students pursuing careers in banking, finance or accounting with preference given to high school graduates from the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle with a minimum 85 grade average; class rank and ACT/SAT scores will be considered. Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) business majors and demonstrate leadership. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Business Education Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate business education majors with preference to resident undergraduate students; merit will be considered.
C.C. Callarman Memorial Scholarship, established in 1987, recognizes contributions of this faculty member and dean of business, serving from 1956-71. The recipient must be a business major planning a business career and have completed at least two semesters at WTAMU, have junior, senior or graduate standing, and cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Rosemartha and James W. Cates Scholarship was established in 2012 by the Cates, owners and operators of The Donut Stop, which operates seven locations in Amarillo and Canyon. Recipient must be a business major with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Bob Chester Memorial Scholarship was created in 1994 by family and friends of Chester to honor his memory and is awarded annually to an outstanding business major preferably from Alpha Kappa Psi.
Levi W. and Margaret T. Cole Endowment Fund is provided each year from earnings of an endowment fund established by Cole’s widow, Margaret T. Cole. It is awarded to a College of Business student chosen on the basis of academic ability, general intelligence and personal character with consideration of the individual’s financial circumstances.
D. Edward Davis College of Business Scholarship was established by friends and family of Ed Davis to honor his memory. Davis was revered as a man of integrity who believed in developing our area and investing in its future. He viewed education as a critical investment for the future viability of our area and this scholarship carries on his legacy of caring about individuals and the community. Recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior College of Business major enrolled full-time and must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given based on need.
Virginia “Jinx” Engler Scholarship was established by family and friends of Engler to provide scholarships to full-time students majoring in business and maintaining an overall 3.0 GPA.
J.W. and Nell Foust Alumni Association Scholarship was established by the WTAMU Alumni Association, friends of the Fousts and the Foust family in memory of J.W. Foust and in honor of Nell Foust. Student in business must have 60 semester hours and 3.0 GPA or above.
Wayne and Patsy Fox Scholarship was established in 2005 to present higher-education opportunities for students in need. Recipient will be a full-time (12 hours per semester) student majoring in business with a minimum “B” equivalent grade point average.
Wayne and Patsy Fox Scholarship II was established by the Fox family. The Foxs met and received their initial college education at WTAMU and want to take an active role in presenting opportunities for higher education to students in need. Recipient will be a full-time (12 hours per semester) student majoring in business with a minimum “B” equivalent grade point average.
Wayne and Patsy Fox Scholarship III was established by the Fox family. The Foxs met and received their initial college education at WTAMU and want to take an active role in presenting opportunities for higher education to students in need. Recipient will be a full-time (12 hours per semester) student majoring in business with a minimum “B” equivalent grade point average.
The Friends of the College of Business Scholarship was established by a generous bequest of the Mabel Riley Jones Estate. The recipient must be a full-time (15 semester hours) junior or senior College of Business major with preference to students pursuing an accounting degree.
Ida Clay Hager Memorial Business Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Hager, a WTAMU employee for 24 years. Recipient must be a freshman business major who has attended all years of high school and graduated from one of the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle and who has a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Robert Austin Hatcher Scholarship was established in 1985 by M.M. Hatcher for deserving students with preference for those majoring in business. Hatcher helped establish the first student-loan program in Texas and assisted with the first bond for Panhandle Plains Higher Education Authority.
Don and Freddie Hodges Business Scholarship was endowed fall 2013 by the Hodges to support students in the College of Business and the Share Your Pride campaign at WTAMU. Recipients must be College of Business majors.
Hudgins Crosier Sumpter, PC Educational Intern Scholarship was established in 2006 by Hudgins Crosier Sumpter, PC to provide course credit, an intern opportunity and a scholarship to a business student interested in pursuing a career in the public accounting profession. Completion of 18 credit hours of accounting course work; priority given to accounting majors but other undergraduate and graduate business majors are considered; student that is working part-time or seeking internship experience in the accounting profession preferred.
Junior Achievement of the High Plains Internship Program Fund and Scholarship was established to award scholarships to “interns in good stadning.”
Matador Resources/Harold E. Melton Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Foran in honor of Harrold E. Melton. Recipient must be a freshman business major and show financial need.
Matador Resources/William E. Semmelbeck Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Foran in honor of Semmelbeck. Recipient must be a freshman business major and show financial need.
MICROFOUR Inc. Scholarship was established by MICROFOUR Inc. to help IDM, finance, accounting or marketing majors. Recipients must have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Jerry Miller Scholarship Fund was established in 2000 by a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Miller and additional gifts in honor of Miller at his retirement by friends, students and colleagues. This fund provides scholarships for freshmen majoring in business.
Larry and LaVelle Mills Family Scholarship was established in 2010 by the Mills because of the impact WT has on the lives of their family and their belief in the value of education to change lives. LaVelle is a professor of management and associate dean of the College of Business. Recipient must be a business major with preference to students with a 2.8 GPA or higher. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
NAIFA Amarillo Area Scholarship was established in 1992 by the Amarillo Association of Life Underwriters business majors. Academic ability, but not necessarily honor students, good character and potential to become contributors to the business community will be considered.
Kenneth H. Olsen Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to honor this associate professor of economics and to honor junior, senior and graduate students in the College of Business.
T. Boone Pickens Scholarship was established in 1987 by T. Boone Pickens Jr. to enhance the business program at WTAMU and encourage and support outstanding students.
Realtor’s Scholarship, established in 1974, benefits junior, senior or graduate business administration majors who have demonstrated interest in a profession related to real estate and a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Ronald and Sandra Watts Scholarship was established in 2013 by the Watts to support students in the College of Business and the Share Your Pride campaign at WTAMU. Recipients must be College of Business majors.
Ann Weatherly Vincent Scholarship, established in 1993 by gifts from A.D. and Mozelle Weatherly in memory of their daughter, provides scholarships for entering freshmen planning a major in business and who have a minimum “B” average with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 grade-point system for scholarship renewal. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Warren Warner Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor Warner who was formerly the head of Lubbock’s Foreign Trade Zone and a dedicated DEC member. The scholarship will fund student internships which will assist students in obtaining practical experience in international business. Recipient must be a junior or senior in the College of Business pursuing studies leading to a career in international trade. Also, recipient must be a resident of a county served by the West Texas District Export Council. Students must present or submit a report to West Texas DEC.
Ruth B. Williams Scholarship was established in 2006 by Don Williams to award scholarships to deserving business students in honor of his mother, Ruth B. Williams, and supplemented in 2006 by the Joachim Foundation in memory of Odis Sims, trustee. The scholarship is available to all College of Business majors with a minimum 2.5 GPA or higher, although priority is given to students most closely meeting the following criteria: single parent pursuing higher education in business; demonstrated financial need; working a part-time or full-time job while pursuing business degree; demonstrated character via commitment to public service and volunteerism; and sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student status.
H. Eugene Worsham and Brown, Graham and Company Scholarship was established in 1992 in memory of Worsham, a member of this accounting firm. Recipients must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) junior or senior, preferably accounting major, with a cumulative 2.5 GPA and 3.0 GPA in major. Ability, leadership, participation in extracurricular activities and potential in major will be considered. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance
Accounting, Economics, and Finance Scholarship Fund was established for general scholarship support to accounting, economics, and finance majors.
James and Linda Bagley Scholarship was established by James and Linda who are both graduates of WTAMU with a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting. Recipient must be an accounting major.
Mildred Bassett Finance Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to students majoring in finance. Preference is given to female, part-time (six to nine hours per semester) students majoring in finance. Recipients must continue to work 30 or more hours per week while receiving scholarship funds and maintain a cumulative 3.3 GPA.
J. Herschel Coffee Scholarship Fund was established by associates and friends of Coffee, a former faculty member, and provides scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students majoring in economics with preference to senior students. Academic achievement and student’s character will be considered.
E. Wayne Davidson Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Davidson, a Korean War navy veteran, first generation college graduate, and CPA for 48 years. Recipient must be an accounting, economics or finance major with preference to juniors, seniors and graduate students with a 3.0 GPA or above and also, preference to a veteran and/or a nontraditional student. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Barry L. Duman Family Scholarship was established by Dr. Barry L. Duman, professor of economics, and his family. Duman came to WTAMU from the University of Southern California in 1969 and remained throughout his entire academic career as both a faculty member and administrator. The scholarship is being endowed so that Duman, his wife, Dyana, and children, Laura and Jeffrey, as well as friends and colleagues, can take an active role in supporting the University and present opportunities to meritorious students to pursue their education. The recipient must be a full-time second-, third- or fourth-year economics or finance major who has maintained a cumulative minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to an economics major.
Gene Edwards Scholarship was established in 1999 to honor the CEO/president of First National Bank upon his retirement and provides assistance to students seeking a career in banking or finance.
Vincent M. Eggers Scholarship was established by Vincent M. Eggers and his friends. Recipient must be a junior or senior and have a minimum 3.0 GPA or higher. Economic majors are first choice, finance majors are second choice and accounting majors are third choice. Preference will be given based on need.
Arthur J. Glover Accounting Scholarship was established for outstanding junior, senior and graduate accounting majors.
Haggard Scholarship, Panhandle Chapter of Texas Society of CPA’s, established in 1968 and provides scholarships to an outstanding accounting student. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Dale R. Hall Accounting Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Hall in 1990 for a junior, senior or graduate accounting major planning an accounting career with a minimum of two regular semesters at WTAMU and a 3.0 GPA overall.
Terry W. Harris Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Harris by his family. He attended WTAMU, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. Harris was the founder of Harris Financial Group Inc. Recipients must be a junior or senior majoring in an accounting, economics or finance field, and in good standing with a minimum of 3.0 GPA.
David Hill Second Chance Fund was established in 2002 in memory of David G. Hill, B.B.A. 1993, B.B.A. Texas A&M University 1964, to provide scholarships to students majoring in accounting and who, like Hill, need a “second chance” at a new career later in life. The scholarship is primarily need based.
Institute of Management Accountants Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide accounting scholarships for WTAMU students. Recipients may be full-time students maintaining a minimum of 12 hours, 15 preferred, with completion of nine hours accounting including the first semester of intermediate accounting, 3.0 GPA and exhibit need for assistance, or they may be part-time students carrying a minimum of six hours with completion of nine hours accounting including the first semester of intermediate accounting, 3.0 GPA, employed part time (20 hours per week) and exhibit need for assistance.
Lasater-Looney Scholarship in political economy was established to provide one scholarship annually to a political science or economics major with 12 hours of both political science and economics (at least six hours upper division in each). The $400 scholarship, payable $200 per semester, was established by Tom Lasater and Paul Looney.
W. Byron Lawrence Finance and Economics Scholarship was established in 1992 by family and friends of this 47-year employee of First National Bank of Amarillo and one of 50 charter bank auditors in the nation. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior student pursuing a career in banking, finance or economics who has completed a minimum of 65 hours and has a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Character, leadership potential and family circumstances will be considered; renewable when criteria are met.
William F. McWhirter Scholarship was established through a generous bequest in Mr. McWhirter’s estate. McWhirter attended WT and graduated with a BBA in 1950 and an MBA in 1958. Recipient must be a junior or senior accounting major, ranked in the top 20 percent of their class according to GPA, and a graduate of a high school in the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle.
Larry and Sandra Oldham Accounting Scholarship was established in 2012 by the Oldhams who were celebrated students at WTAMU in the early 70’s. Larry was Man of the Year in 1975 and Sandra was the feature twirler for the marching band. Recipient must be an accounting major demonstrating financial need with preference to students from Midland, Texas, or the surrounding area.
Parman E. Reynolds Business Scholarship was established by Reynolds who received his MS in finance and economics from WTAMU in 2003. Reynolds has been a part-time instructor in economics since August 2004. Recipient must be an economics or finance major with a minimum 3.0 GPA with preference to a returning student and/or a single parent.
Pulliam Family Scholarship was established in 2003 by Bill Pulliam and Dr. Darlene Pulliam to provide scholarships and assistance to deserving accounting and M.P.A. students. Recipients must be undergraduate and graduate accounting majors.
Mary Frances Saunders Scholarship was established in 1995 to provide scholarships to full-time students majoring in finance with a 3.0 GPA.
Terry Scholarship Fund was established in 2003 by Dr. Neil Terry and Dr. Anne Macy Terry to provide scholarship and assistance to deserving economics, finance M.S.F.E. and M.B.A. students.
Leon Trekell Scholarship was established in 1982 by a gift from Leon and Charlene Trekell and has been developed by WTAMU alumni and friends. Recipient will be the “top” intermediate accounting (ACCT 3331 and ACCT 3332 ) student as determined primarily by class average but with consideration given for class assignment completion and class attendance. Recipient must have completed both classes or completed ACCT 3331 and be currently enrolled in ACCT 3332 as an “on campus” student at WTAMU, no online classes or transfers. Recipient must have completed both classes within the 12 months prior to announcement of the award. Based only on performance in courses with no attention to academic major, past performance in other courses or overall grade point average.
David and Myrt Wilder Scholarship was established in 1995 to provide scholarships to full-time (12 hours per semester) students with a 2.5 GPA majoring in accounting and finance with preference to students exhibiting need.
H. Eugene Worsham and Brown, Graham and Company Scholarship was established in 1992 in memory of Worsham, a member of this accounting firm. Recipients must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) junior or senior preferably accounting major with a cumulative 2.5 GPA and 3.0 GPA in major. Ability, leadership, participation in extracurricular activities and potential in major will be considered. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
WTAMU Accounting Club Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for sophomore and above accounting majors who are members of the WTAMU Accounting Club. Academic record, University and community activities, and financial need will be considered in selection of a recipient.
Department of Information and Decision Management
Abdullat-Maaytah CIS Scholarship was established in 2007 by Dr. Amjad Abdullat, head of the Department of Information and Decision Management, and his spouse, Taghreed Maaytah, M.D., to support students at WTAMU majoring in Computer Information Systems. Recipient must be enrolled as a full-time sophomore, junior, senior or graduate CIS major or any College of Business major with preference to a CIS major; must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Anderson Merchandisers Internship Scholarship was established for students enrolled as an information and decision management major in good academic standing; must be a participant in WTAMU’s cooperative education and internship program; and must maintain “intern in good standing” status with Anderson Merchandisers Internship Scholarship to be considered for the next semester.
Joseph and Rhoanna (Griego) Austin Scholarship was established by Joseph (Joe) and Rhoanna (Rho) who met and graduated from WTAMU. They have an appreciation for the individual attention and encouragement provided by their professors as well as the overall “caring” environment that WTAMU provides. The Austins believe in the importance of a quality education in ensuring a high quality of life and want to help provide the opportunity to others. The recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in information and decision management or nursing, enrolled full time, and have a “B+” average (85 or higher) or 3.25 GPA. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Computer Science Association Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide scholarships to full-time (12 hours per semester, prefer 15) or part-time (six hours per semester) information and decision-management or CS majors with a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Recipient must be active in the Department of Information and Decision Management.
CSI Meridian Internship Program Fund and Scholarship (formerly McCoy Myers and Associates Internship Program Fund and Scholarship) was established to provide enhanced educational opportunities, direct work experience, and financial support for students at WTAMU. Scholarships are awarded to “interns in good standing” with CSI Meridian.

Gensler Scholarship Fund for Students Majoring in IDM was established by the Golden Spread Chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals in the name of Gensler, the first head of the information and decision management department at WTAMU. Recipients must have declared a major in the IDM department or incoming freshmen with the written intention of majoring within the IDM department. Non-incoming freshman recipients must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be eligible and must have completed at least 12 semester hours of course work during the previous semester.
Information Systems Scholarship was established by organizations interested in providing scholarships for IDM or computer science majors; competitive GPA.
Carey Lyles Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends in loving memory of Lyles. Recipient must be a CIS/IDM major, enrolled in at least six hours per semester and maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.
Scholarship for Enterprising Students was established to provide scholarships for full-time (12 hours per semester) students majoring in information and decision management, management, marketing or general business. The recipient must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA and be a U.S. citizen with preference given to Texas Panhandle-area students who demonstrate a visible interest and involvement in entrepreneurial activities.
Dr. and Mrs. Thannoun Scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Thannoun for first-generation college students majoring in information and decision management. Recipient must be enrolled in at least six hours and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Department of Management, Marketing and General Business
Business Management Scholarship Fund was established to award scholarships to management majors with preference to junior, senior or graduate students, demonstrate good academic ability and show good potential in management through demonstrated leadership in academic and extracurricular activities.
Ocie G. Chism Scholarship Endowment Fund was established for students majoring in marketing.
CINTAS Corporate Business Scholarship was established by CINTAS in recognition of the close relationship with WTAMU and the Management, Marketing and General Business department. The selection will be made by the College of Business Scholarship Committee based on grade point average.
Don R. Fraser Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding marketing student.
Robert S. Glazer Memorial Scholarship in Business was established by Glazer’s Wholesale Distributors for a business student studying marketing, management or general business. Recipient must be enrolled in the College of Business, junior or senior standing, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be a full-time student (at least nine hours per semester).
Institute of Marketing Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to full-time (12 hours per semester) marketing majors with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Panhandle Human Resources Association (PHRA) Scholarship was established by the PHRA, an organization formed to educate, train and provide a forum for communication for professionals in the human resource field. Recipients will be a business management major taking a minimum of 12 hours per semester with a minimum “B” equivalent grade point average.
Scholarship for Enterprising Students was established to provide scholarships for full-time (12 hours per semester) students majoring in information and decision management, management, marketing or general business. Bill and Betty Semmelbeck Business Scholarship was established in 2008 by Mr. and Mrs. William E. Semmelbeck to help students focusing on business studies. Recipient must be a marketing major (first choice), management major (second choice) or general business major (third choice). Selection will be based primarily on need.
College of Education and Social Sciences
Greater Texas Foundation-Dr. Fred and Betty Stoker Removing Educational Barriers Scholarship was established in 2007 by Fred Stocker in partnership with the Greater Texas Foundation and honors the marriage of Fred and Betty Stoker, their commitment to family and the value of education. Recipient must be a College of Education and Social Sciences majors enrolled a minimum of 12 hours per semester. Preference will be given based on need; may be renewable.
Department of Education
A.A.U.W., Amarillo Branch, Ruby Lee Smith Scholarship was established in 1998 to provide scholarships for WTAMU education students planning to teach history and/or social studies and to honor the memory of Smith. Recipient must be a full-time female junior or senior student having completed one semester at WTAMU and one or more of the Fundamentals of Education courses and must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to secondary education students planning to teach history and/or social studies. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Amarillo Retired Teachers Association (ARTA) Education Scholarship was established by members of Amarillo Retired Teachers Association. The organization’s objective is to promote the professional, economic, intellectual, social and healthy well being of retired school personnel in Amarillo, Texas. Recipient must be a graduate from one of the four Amarillo ISD high schools; must enroll in a Teacher Education Program at WTAMU; accepted by the Teacher Education Unit of the Department of Education; and is a junior or senior with an overall 3.0 GPA on their freshman- and sophomore-level college work.
Arnold Gentry and Vivian Dunn Attebury Memorial Scholarship in Education was established in 1996 in honor and memory of Arnold and Vivian Attebury and to provide scholarships for junior, senior and graduate education majors. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have completed two semesters at WTAMU.
Mary Collins Bagot Scholarship was established in 1995 to honor Bagot and to provide scholarships to junior, senior and graduate education majors. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and completed two semesters at WTAMU.
Raymond W. and Enid Bates Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 by the Iota Theta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi to honor the late husband of Dr. Enid Bates, professor of education at WTAMU since 1970. Recipient must be a junior, senior or graduate (preference to undergraduates) education majors planning a career in teaching with preference to Kappa Delta Phi members or those who are eligible for membership. Student must have attended WTAMU at least two semesters and maintain a minimum 3.25 GPA.
Helen Slater Bentley Education Scholarship was established in 2006 by Ben and Pam Bentley in honor of Ben’s mother, Ms. Helen Slater Bentley. The recipient must be a junior or senior education major with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Edna Burdine Bridwell Scholarship (formerly the Edna Burdine Bridwell Loan Fund) was originally set up as a loan fund and in 2010, was converted to a scholarship. Recipient must be a single parent who is a sophomore elementary education major with a minimum 2.8 GPA. With the application, submit a 500 word essay describing your current conditions and future goals and send via email attachment to scholarships@wtamu.edu.
Dr. Robin L. Capt Memorial Scholarship in Education was established in memory of Capt to provide scholarships to education majors and members of the Kappa Delta Pi organization. Capt was a beloved professor at West Texas A&M University and served as the associate dean of graduate school. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother that gave to others before herself. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate education major and member of Kappa Delta Pi. The student must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Delee Taylor Carter Endowed Scholarship in Education was established in honor of Carter by her family. Mrs. Carter, a 1960 graduate of WTAMU, served the community as a teacher for 32 years in Amarillo. Recipient must be a full-time education major with preference to elementary education majors with an emphasis in reading. Also, preference will be given to students demonstrating strong leadership capabilities.
Leta M. Cayton Memorial Scholarship was established by Patrick Hunt and Suzanne Chock Hunt in memory of Cayton to provide scholarships to students pursuing a teaching career. Student must be a full-time education major with emphasis in bilingual education/secondary Spanish or ESL and must submit two letters of recommendation from faculty. Letters may be sent via email attachment to scholarships@wtamu.edu.
Childre-Mayhew Scholarship was established in 1982 in honor of Edith Childre and Ruth Mayhew, and is awarded to teacher-education students.
E.R. “Dutch” and Odessie Cleavinger Award was established in 1995 to provide two math awards annually-one to an outstanding junior math major and one to an outstanding math education major.
Frances Collins Christian Scholarship was established in 1998 by gifts from family and friends to honor Christian and to provide scholarships for WTAMU students majoring in education. Recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) junior, senior or graduate education major with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and completed two semesters at WTAMU.
Allie Smith Collins Scholarship was established in 1994 by children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of Collins to honor her memory. Collins taught first grade for 26 years in the Canyon schools. Recipients must be junior, senior or graduate students majoring in education with a minimum 3.0 GPA and two semesters at WTAMU.
Peggy and Bill Cotton Scholarship was established in 1998 to provide scholarships for graduates of Vega High School who are in the top third of their class and who wish to pursue a career in education. In 2000, it was expanded to include students graduating from any high school in Oldham County and also include counseling students and those involved in the PACE program. The student must be enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) unless a counseling or PACE program student and must maintain a 2.5 GPA.
Nadine Crum, Karen Burkhart and Bryna Harris Education Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for full-time (12 hours per semester) junior or senior education majors, preparing to teach in Texas public schools, with an overall 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to descendants of Nadine Crum, graduates of Perryton High School or others qualified from the northernmost 26 counties of Texas.
Elva Mae Deer Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995 to provide scholarships to assist students in education to pursue teaching certificates.
Betsy Dickerson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1983 by family and friends of this Amarillo High School senior. Recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) education major pursuing a teaching career and must maintain a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Carolyn Easterling Memorial Fund (formerly Metro AMBUCS/Carolyn Easterling Memorial Fund) was established in 1997 to honor the memory of Carolyn Easterling and provide scholarships to qualified education majors. Recipient must be a junior or senior education major enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) and must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Additionally, financial need will be considered.
Education Credit Union Scholarship for Special Education Majors was established to aid in attracting education majors to the special education field. Recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) special education major with preference to students interested in learning disabilities.
Dorothy Egerton Farley Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor Farley and to provide scholarship opportunities for WTAMU students majoring in elementary education. Recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) elementary education major who might not otherwise be financially able to attend college. The student must have a 3.0 GPA and be of good moral character. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Sergeant First Class Tommy I. Folks Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established to honor SFC Folks by the Soldiers of Alpha Company, upon their return from duty in Iraq. Recipient must be an education or sports and exercise science major and then determined by the following criteria: a member of good standing in the Texas Army National Guard, or a dependent of a current or retired Texas Army National Guardsman; or, if neither previous criteria can be met, the scholarship can be opened to any student entering into education or sports and exercise science major, enrolled in either courses each semester and must maintain a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Future Teacher Blue Chip Recruits Scholarship was established in 2002 to provide scholarships for future teachers. Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) undergraduate students enrolled in a WTAMU teacher preparation program, identified as “Future Teacher Blue Chip Recruits” by the department or students who have completed an “Agreement to Participate and Declaration of Intent to Teach” form. Entering freshmen students must be in the top quarter of their high school graduating class and must maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Sophomore and junior students must maintain a cumulative 2.7 GPA and senior students must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the following high-needs areas of the teacher preparation program: mathematics, science (including life science and physical science), special education, languages other than English, technology and bilingual education. Additional qualifications may be determined by WTAMU. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Future Teacher Scholarship was established in 2001 and provides scholarships for education majors planning a career in teaching. Recipient must have a 3.25 GPA.
Kenneth and Christine Gibson Scholarship was established in 1993 and is awarded to students majoring in education with preference to elementary education majors. Also, preference first year to an entering freshman. This scholarship is renewable if the student maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Clyde V. Goodwine Scholarship was established by friends and family of Goodwine to provide scholarships for students who wish to pursue a teaching career. Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) students from the Texas Panhandle who are pursuing teacher certification and who maintain a 2.5 GPA.
Howard D. Graves Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide scholarships for education majors. The recipient must have junior standing or above; hold the highest grade point average of those applying; must be able to demonstrate financial need; be enrolled in a regular teacher certification program; and recommended by the Education Scholarship Committee.
Dr. Ted Guffy Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Dr. Norman T. Guffy Jr., who retired Aug. 31, 2006, after a 44-year career as an educator in Oklahoma and Texas. In 1990, he moved to WTAMU where he served six years as division head and 10 years as dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences. First consideration will be given to an incoming female athlete, who graduated from Canyon High School with a minimum 85 GPA and plans to certify as a teacher in a shortage area; must maintain a 2.75 GPA. In the event that no one is found meeting the criteria, another “future teacher” of any classification may be recommended. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
H.K. “Tex” and Ruth R. Guthrie Scholarship Fund was established by family and friends honoring the memory of Herbert K. and Ruth R. Guthrie and to provide scholarships to WTAMU students pursuing a degree in education. Recipient must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA and committed to teach in the public school system.
Rose T. Hall Math Education Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor Hall and provide scholarships for math education students. Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) junior or senior math education majors.
High Plains Instructional Staff Development Scholarship provides scholarships for undergraduate students enrolled in a WTAMU teacher preparation program for not less than 12 semester credit hours; undergraduate students who have completed an “Agreement to Participate and Declaration of Intent to Teach Form”; graduate students currently enrolled in a WTAMU teacher preparation program for not less than six semester credit hours; and students enrolled in the Panhandle Alternative Certification Program. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the following high-need areas of the teacher preparation program: mathematics, science (including life science and physical science), special education, languages other than English, technology and bilingual education. Additional qualifications may be considered.
LaRue Hite Education Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide scholarships to returning women students majoring in education. Preference is given to female students returning to or beginning school later in life and pursuing a career in teaching. The scholarship may be renewable at the committee’s discretion.
Instructional Technology Scholarship provides scholarships to students pursuing a graduate degree in Instructional Technology on a full-time basis. Selection is based on need, scholarship, leadership and student involvement. The students must maintain a 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Mary Ann Winfrey Juels Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide a scholarship to a junior, senior or graduate student majoring in education, preferably elementary education, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference for graduates of high schools in the Texas Panhandle.
Myles Adrian and Imogene Kelly Memorial Scholarship was established by J.D. and Kay Kelly Swinford in honor of her parents to provide scholarships for education majors and/or students pursuing a career in teaching. Student must be a graduate from Pampa High School, Canyon High School, Dimmitt High School, Paschal High School, or Perryton High School enrolled a minimum of nine hours per semester and must maintain a 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Dr. Jim L. and Sue Carole Kidd Scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Kidd, relatives, friends and students who have known Jim or Sue Carole Kidd. Dr. Kidd served as a WTAMU dean of education. Recipient must be a Caprock High School, Amarillo, Texas graduating senior, a spouse or child of a CHS graduate, demonstrate financial need, enroll as a full-time student at WTAMU, and enter a teacher education program. The student must also have a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Dr. Mike King Scholarship was established in 1999 by friends and family to honor King and to provide scholarships for graduates of a Canyon Independent School District high school who wish to pursue a career in education. Students must be enrolled full-time (12 hours per semester) and meet requirements for admission to WTAMU and the education program. In alternate years, the scholarship will be given to elementary education and secondary education majors.
Glenn and Sallie Lloyd Education Scholarship was established in 2004 by Glenn and Sallie Lloyd to promote the teaching profession through scholarship. Student must be a junior or senior education major with a goal of teaching in a public school and must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Wanda Claborn Lockridge Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 by Roxanne Carter and Melanie Fletcher in memory of their mother, Wanda Claborn Lockridge. Recipient must be an education major and maintain a 2.5 GPA.
J.B. and Lois Lowe Endowment Fund was established by the Amarillo Branch of AAUW, relatives and friends who have known and loved J.B. and Lois Lowe. Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) junior, senior or graduate education majors pursuing a career in classroom teaching. Student must have completed at least two semesters at WTAMU and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA.
Ruth Lowes Scholarship was established in 1991 to honor Lowes, professor in education for 50 years at WTAMU. Recipients must be junior, senior or graduate education majors planning a teaching career. The student must have completed two semesters at WTAMU and maintained at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA.
Nancy McCaslin Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 as a tribute to McCaslin who was dorm matron of McCaslin Hall, formerly known as Randall Hall. Students must be full-time undergraduate juniors pursuing any education certification degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Greg and Denise Mills Memorial Scholarship was established by Cactus Feeders Inc. to provide an annual award to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student majoring in agriculture and/or education with a 2.5 GPA. Priority is given to families of employees of Cactus Feeders Inc. and to graduates of Dumas High School.
John and Jo Mozola Education Scholarship was established in 1999 to provide scholarships for three full-time (12 hours per semester) incoming freshmen who are committed education majors with a desire to teach and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
John and Jo Mozola Math Education Scholarship was established in 2013 to provide scholarships to full-time math education majors with a 3.0 or better GPA. The recipient must demonstrate a sincere intent to teach in Potter and Randall counties.
Nathaniel “Nat” and Helen Neal Scholarship, established in 1994 by gifts in memory of Neal and from friends of education, provides scholarships to students majoring in education. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate education majors planning a career in teaching and who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to minority students. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Panhandle Council of Administrators of Special Education Scholarship was established by PCASE, an organization made up of special education directors from the Region 16 area. The organization collects dues from directors every school year and some of the funds are used to provide scholarships for college students pursuing degrees related to the special education field in public education. The recipient must be a graduate student who resides in the Region 16 area seeking a degree in the educational diagnostician program.
Gerald G. and Mary E. Parker Scholarship was established in 1999 by Dr. Parker and matching funds to provide scholarships to members of Kappa Delta Pi with a 3.0 GPA.
Dipakben J. Patel Endowed Scholarship was established by gifts from Dr. and Mrs. Suryakant J. Patel and friends to provide scholarships to full-time junior, senior or graduate students, preferably female in teaching education, social work or nursing with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Dr. E.B. and Martha Elizabeth “Beth” Posey Education Scholarship was established in 2013. E.B. Posey and Beth Patton married in 1946 and moved to Canyon in 1967. Dr. Posey taught at WT and retired after 20 years of service and named Professor Emeritus in 1993. Recipient must be an education major with a commitment to teach in the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle and must also maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Ima Scott Redden College of Education Scholarship was established in honor of Ima Scott, a native of Mobeetie, Texas. She and her sister, Eddie Mae Scott, graduated from West Texas State Teachers College. Ima spent her entire life teaching elementary school in Mobeetie, Briscoe, Shamrock and then in Oregon. She received an advanced degree at the University of Colorado and taught geology at Baylor University. Recipient must be an undergraduate full-time female student majoring in education or intend to teach with a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
J.W. “Ted” Reid Memorial Scholarship was established in 1984 in memory of Reid, long-time area educator, for junior or senior education majors pursuing a teaching career.
Dr. Don A. Rice ‘66 and Sara Slagle Rice ‘66 Endowed Scholarship was established from an initial gift by the Rice’s to provide assistance to mature, non-traditional students who are seeking to better themselves through education. Recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) undergraduate student working toward a degree in teacher education with a family income of $50,000 or less. Also, must be a Texas resident for at least two years with preferences in the following order: married parent with children living in the home who is attempting to juggle work and care of children; single parent with children living in the home who is attempting to juggle work and care of children; student 25 years or older, married with or without children living in the home; and student 25 years or older, married with or without children living in the home working toward a master’s degree in teacher education.
Eddie Mae Scott College of Education Scholarship was established in honor of Scott, a native of Mobeetie, Texas. She and her sister, Ima Scott, graduated from West Texas State Teachers College. She loved teaching and spent her entire life teaching, the past 30 plus years at Forest Hill Elementary School in Amarillo. Recipient must be an undergraduate full-time female student majoring in education or intend to teach with a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Douglas Alfred Shirley Scholarship was established in 1995 by family and friends of Dr. Shirley, one-time dean of WTAMU, to honor his memory and to provide a scholarship for a junior or senior education major with a 3.0 GPA.
Texas Association of Future Educators (T.A.F.E.) Student Scholarship was established to provide an annual award to two current high school students involved in T.A.F.E. who intend to attend WTAMU and pursue a degree in education. Student must be an incoming freshman enrolled full time pursuing any education certification degree and must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Also, student must currently be or previously have been a member of the Region 16 TAFE organization.
Ken Waugh Scholarships were established in 1993 and 1995 to provide scholarships for students majoring in counselor education with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
W. Rob and Judy D. Williams Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 by the Williams as a legacy to their family’s alma mater. Student must be a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate pursuing any education certification degree and must maintain a minimum 3.3 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Claud and Inell Zevely Scholarship established in 1982, provides scholarships to special education majors with a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Student must take at least 12 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 24 semester hours per year. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice
John B. and Mary O. Coleman Scholarship was created in 1993 by family and friends of the Colemans in recognition of their interest in students and in higher education. Students of at least sophomore standing with a minimum 2.2 GPA majoring in pre-dentistry, pre-law, political science or criminal justice are eligible to apply.
Criminal Justice Master’s Program Scholarship was established in 2000 by contributions and grants to provide a scholarship for criminal justice graduate students in good standing.
Maxine Durrett Earl Charitable Foundation Scholarship in Political Science was established in memory of Earl. Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in political science with preference to Garza county students; second preference to the following counties: Gaines, Dawson, Borden, Scurry, Kent, Lynn, Terry, Yoakum, Cochran, Hockley, Lubbock, Crosby, Dickens, Motley, Floyd, Hale, Lamb and Bailey. Third preference to the following counties: Andrews, Martin, Howard, Mitchell, Nolan, Taylor, Callahan, Shackelford, Jones, Fisher, Stonewall, Haskell, Throckmorton, Baylor, Knox, King, Cottle, Foard, Wilbarger, Hardeman, Childress, Hall, Briscoe, Swisher, Castro, Parmer, Deaf Smith, Randall, Armstrong, Donley, Collingworth, Wheeler, Gray, Carson, Potter, Oldham, Hartley, Moore, Hutchinson, Roberts, Hemphill, Lipscomb, Ochiltree, Hansford, Sherman, Dallas, and the following counties in New Mexico: Chaves, Lea, Roosevelt, Curry and Quay. Additionally, th e student must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Captain Ed Foster Law Enforcement Scholarship was established by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Foster, a long-time member of University police at WTAMU. Criminal justice students with an emphasis in law enforcement who have completed at least 45 hours at WTAMU with 2.75 GPA are eligible for the award.
Harrington Law Enforcement Scholarship Fund is available to full-time employees in criminal justice agencies in Potter, Randall and Deaf Smith counties of Texas. The student must enroll in six or more undergraduate or three graduate hours and earn a minimum 2.3 GPA undergraduate or 3.3 GPA graduate. These scholarships cover a portion of tuition, fees and books.
Margaret and Jerry Hodge Criminal Justice Scholarship was established to provide scholarships to graduate students majoring in criminal justice. Students must be in good academic standing.
Judge Marvin Jones Scholarship was established in 1976 to provide scholarships to assist students exhibiting outstanding character and leadership ability, as well as having a proven scholastic record. The scholarship honors Jones’ service to the Texas Panhandle as a member of Congress, federal judge and adviser of three U.S. presidents. Selection of recipients shall be made on a competitive basis taking into consideration high school rank, SAT or ACT scores, or GPA of previous college work; evidence of outstanding character/leadership ability; involvement in extracurricular activities; and past honors received.
Lasater-Looney Scholarship in Political Economics was established to provide an annual scholarship to a political science or economics major with 12 hours of both political science and economics (at least six hours upper division in each). The scholarship was established by Tom Lasater and Paul Looney.
Brent T. Lynch Criminal Justice Scholarship Award was established in 1980 to honor Lynch, a long-time faculty member and founder of the Criminal Justice Program. The annual scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate criminal justice major who has completed a minimum of 60 semester hours with a 3.0 GPA or better in the major’s course requirements.
Debra McCartt Public Service and Administration Scholarship was established in 2013 by McCartt, the first female mayor of Amarillo. The McCartt scholar must be enrolled as a full-time junior or senior public service and administration major. In the event that there is no public service and administration major, the scholarship may be awarded to a political science major with an interest in public service. Additionally, the student must maintain a 3.0 GPA and participate in a mentorship with McCartt. The scholarships is renewable for an additional year when criteria are met.
Travis McBride Political Science Scholarship Fund was established in 1986 by Professor Emeritus McBride and other members of the WTAMU Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice. Recipient must be a full-time student pursuing a degree in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice.
Jerry Neal Scholarship was established in honor of Neal’s 26 years of dedicated service to the city of Amarillo and the surrounding communities. This scholarship is for criminal justice majors who maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA. Preference will be given based on need and also Amarillo police officers, employees of the city of Amarillo who are preparing to become police officers, or children of employees of the city of Amarillo who are preparing to become police officers. This scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Jesse and Grace Osborn Endowment Fund was established by the Osborn family in recognition of their many contributions to the state of Texas and Texas Panhandle, especially during Jesse Osborn’s terms in the Texas House of Representatives and on the Texas Board of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. Provides scholarships to students majoring in political science, criminal justice, or a related field with emphasis in criminal justice or political science who have completed at least 12 hours in political science and/or criminal justice with a 3.0 GPA.
Retired Professors Scholarship for Political Science and Criminal Justice was established from gifts given by retired professors and their colleagues, families and friends in order to assist in the education of political science and criminal justice majors.
Walter L. Shelly Political Science Scholarship was established in 2002 to provide scholarships for students from the Texas Panhandle or Oklahoma Panhandle majoring in political science and who have the talent and commitment to succeed in undergraduate political science with special interest in Texas government or political theory. Student must be enrolled in 15 hours per semester, 3.5 GPA, 40 hours per semester in volunteer activities with accredited non-profit organization focusing on children’s issues, and pursue career in government, law or teaching government. Student must have good character, leadership, enthusiastic about major and financial need.
Max and Gene Alice Sherman Public Affairs Scholarship was established by colleagues and friends of the Shermans in recognition of their interest and service to WTAMU during his tenure as president of the University and to the people of the Texas Panhandle during his service as state senator. The scholarship is available to undergraduate students majoring in political science or a related public affairs discipline and must have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours with a 2.5 GPA or better.
J. Pat Stephens Honorary Scholarship (formerly the J. Pat Stephens Honorary Internship Program) was established in 1997 to honor Stephens for his long-term dedication to the City of Canyon. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student with a 3.0 GPA majoring in political science or public administration. This scholarship may be awarded as an internship on an “as needed” basis.
Claudia D. Stravato Women in Government Scholarship was established in 1984 in honor of Stravato’s many accomplishments. This scholarship is for political science majors who are planning a career in public administration. Recipient must have completed two semesters at WTAMU and be of at least junior standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
John Ward Public Administration Scholarship was established by donations in honor of John Ward at his retirement. He gave 21 years of valuable service as city manager of Amarillo, Texas. Recipient must be an undergraduate majoring in political science, public administration or emergency management administration with a minimum 3.0 GPA overall, or a student enrolled in the graduate program pursuing a master’s degree in political science. Applicants will be required to submit an essay explaining their interest and intent in the public administration field.
Department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work
Jane Addams Memorial Scholarship was established in 1988 to be awarded to students with a minimum of nine hours in social work or sociology, with at least a 2.5 GPA on all work at WTAMU.
Dr. Timothy Atchison Memorial Scholarship in Psychology was established by family and friends in memory of Atchison. Dr. Atchison joined the WTAMU faculty in 2002 and received the Instructional Excellence Award in 2010-2011 for his outstanding work in the classroom. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student with a high GPA. Also, the student must be a psychology major, neuroscience certificate student, or student intending to pursue graduate studies in psychology or school psychology.
LaNelle Bassett-Winn Counseling and Guidance Scholarship was established by the family of Mrs. Lanelle Bassett-Winn in honor of her 83rd birthday. Recipient must be a female full-time junior, senior or graduate student with preference to psychology majors focusing on counseling and guidance. If psychology major cannot be found, an education major with a focus on counseling and guidance will be selected. Student must be working towards the current counseling standards and certification and must also be a working parent or be an active member of the military reserves, with a child. Additionally, the recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Brian M. Beckley Scholarship was established by his parents, Robert and Cheryl Beckley. Recipient must be a sociology major, and selection will be based on grade point average.
Dorothy Gimp Brand Scholarship was established by Myrna Gimp Raffkind, former WTAMU student and faculty member, and her husband, Daniel, in honor of her mother. Recipients will be outstanding professional candidates in psychology, sociology and social work; based upon academic performance and academic potential.
Tom Cannon Student Service Scholarship was established in 1986 in recognition of Cannon’s commitment to developing each student’s abilities, both personally and academically. Awards are made to junior, senior or graduate psychology majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
W. Joseph Findley Scholarship Fund was established by the department of psychology in 1983 in recognition of 33 years of distinguished service to WTAMU by Findley. Recipients must be junior, senior or graduate psychology majors who are planning a career in psychology and completed two semesters at WTAMU with a 3.0 GPA on all work completed and a 3.5 GPA in psychology.
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Scholarship Award was established in 1982 by the Indian Association of Amarillo for students majoring in sociology and/or social work. Recipient must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and have completed 60 credit hours. Financial need is the most important factor considered.
W. Mitchell Jones Scholarship Fund was established by the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work in 1983 in recognition of the 45 years of distinguished service to WTAMU by Jones. Recipient must be a junior, senior or graduate psychology major who is planning a career in psychology and completed at least two regular semesters at WTAMU. Also, student must have at least a 3.0 GPA on all work completed and a 3.5 GPA in psychology.
Marjorie Waddle Kruckeberg Scholarship was established in 1993 by gifts from family and friends of Kruckeberg to honor her 26 years of service at the Amarillo State Center and to provide scholarships for promising students majoring in social work. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA and demonstrate outstanding communication skills with preference for students with a strong interest in direct contact/counseling of families. Financial need is a consideration.
Judith Mathewson Lankford Social Work Scholarship was established in honor of Lankford by her husband John. Recipient must have completed nine hours in the social work program.
Jay Allen Mathis Memorial Scholarship was established by Claude E. and Alice R. Mathis and other contributors in memory of Jay Allen Mathis. Psychology majors planning a career in psychology, who have completed at least two regular semesters at WTAMU, and attained junior, senior or graduate standing with a 3.0 GPA on work completed at the college level and 3.5 GPA in psychology, may apply.
Sibyl Mitchell Scholarship was established by Sibyl H. Mitchell in support of a hard working student in a social science field. Recipient must demonstrate financial need and must have a 2.0-3.0 GPA.
Nona L. Moore Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 by a gift from the estate of Moore. Awards are made to social work, sociology and psychology majors who have attended WTAMU at least two regular semesters and maintained a 3.0 GPA on all work completed at WTAMU and in their major.
National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Scholarship, Amarillo Unit, was established in honor of K.R. (Raju) Ramakrishnan and in support of WTAMU social work students. Recipients will be a NASW member and participate in Amarillo Unit meetings, workshops and seminars; be in good academic standing with an accumulation of 12 hours social work credits; and graduate or undergraduate standing. Financial need is considered.
Hubert W. Oppe Scholarship Fund was established by the Department of Behavioral Sciences in 1988 in recognition of Oppe’s distinguished career as a sociologist at WTAMU. Awards are made to social work, sociology and psychology majors who have attended WTAMU at least two regular semesters and demonstrated a commitment to their major. Additionally, the student must have a 3.0 GPA on all work completed at WTAMU and in major. Preference will be given first to social work and sociology majors followed by psychology majors.
Dipakben J. Patel Endowed Scholarship was established by gifts from Dr. and Mrs. Suryakant J. Patel and friends to provide scholarships to junior, senior and graduate students, preferably female in teacher education, social work or nursing with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Phi Alpha Nu Society Scholarship was established in 1998 to provide scholarships to members of Phi Alpha Nu Honor Society. Preference will be given to current members with the highest GPA and participation in the Sociology/Social Work Club.
Psychology Club Scholarship was established to honor students who help to promote psychology in the community and through service. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student seeking a degree in psychology with preference to members of the Psychology Club or a student who is actively engaged in the program beyond coursework. Students must also maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Sarah Raffkind Scholarship Fund was established in 1983 by the family of Raffkind. Awards are made to declared psychology majors planning a career in psychology who maintain a 3.0 GPA on all work completed at WTAMU and a 3.5 GPA in psychology.
Dr. Kollengode R. Ramakrishnan Scholarship was established by graduate social work students in honor of Ramakrishnan who devoted his life as a social work professor to WTAMU and has helped with numerous Recipient must be an undergraduate and/or graduate social work student, community service and financial need considered, and good academic standing.
John and Sally Skaggs Psychology Scholarship was established by Sally Ingerton in 1982. Recipient must be a junior, senior or graduate psychology major planning a career in psychology. Also, the student must have completed at least two regular semesters at WTAMU and have at least a 3.0 GPA on all work completed and a 3.25 overall GPA in psychology.
Jeffery Weiss Psychology Scholarship was established with initial gifts from COESS-faculty and staff, family members of Weiss, and the outside community. Weiss graduated from WTAMU with a BS degree in psychology and loved WT and the psychology professors. Recipient must be a full-time junior or senior psychology major with preference to students with disabilities. Student must maintain a 2.5 GPA and must have completed at least one semester (12 semester hours) at WTAMU.
Arvezene Winter Scholarship Fund was created by gifts from friends, children, relatives and other contributors who knew and loved Winter. The scholarship is awarded annually to students who are psychology majors planning a career in counseling and have reached junior, senior or graduate standing. Applicants should have at least a 3.0 GPA and must have completed at least two semesters at WTAMU.
Clark E. Wooldridge Memorial Scholarship was established in 2010 in honor of Wooldridge who was instrumental in developing the Social Work Program at WT. He retired as an associate professor of social work in 1993 and was honored as professor emeritus. Recipient must be a full-time rising junior undergraduate pursuing a social work degree with a minimum 2.25 GPA. Additionally, the student must be involved and active in class participation. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities
Bennink Fine Arts Scholarship became a reality in 1984. Because of her love for her alma mater, Ruth Barton Bennink and her husband made it possible for a junior, senior or graduate student in fine arts with two regular semesters at WTAMU to receive this scholarship. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Levi W. and Margaret T. Cole Fine Arts Endowment Fund was created to provide awards to fine arts students. Selection is based on academic ability and personal character. Financial circumstances will be considered.
Joan Collins Music Provost’s Leadership Scholarship was established by her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and John Smithee. Collins was a talented artist and pianist who used her gifts to enrich the lives of those around her. Recipient must be a female theatre, music or art major enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) and must maintain a 3.0 or above GPA. Also, the student must display leadership and involvement in school and community as well as scholarship.
C.W. Forman and Louise Forman Endowed Scholarship was established in 1993 by Mrs. Louise Forman in memory of her husband C.W. Forman. Recipients must be a junior, senior or graduate student; major in one of the humanities; and maintain a 3.0 GPA and minimum course load of 12 hours per semester. Financial need is a consideration.
Mary Gill Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Dr. Mary J. Gill, professor emeritus of West Texas A&M University, by her family, friends and former students. Recipients must be junior/senior/graduate-level standing; any major; an interest and love of Hispanic things, travel abroad and foreign languages; completed at least two regular semesters at WTAMU; take or have taken at least two semesters of Spanish at WTAMU; and have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall and 3.2 GPA in their major work.
Greater Texas Foundation-Dr. Sue Park Removing Educational Barriers Scholarship was established in partnership with the Greater Texas Foundation. The scholarship honors Park’s 40 years of service to WTAMU as professor of English, department head and, for 18 years, dean of the Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities. Recipient must be enrolled a minimum of 12 hours per semester and must be a College of Fine Arts and Humanities major; preference will be given based on need.
Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 by a bequest from the Sybil B. Harrington Living Trust to support scholarships for the Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities.
“I Have a Dream” History Scholarship was established in 2008 by Dr. Marty Kuhlman, associate professor in the Department of History. Kuhlman endowed this scholarship to assist undergraduate students who have a deep appreciation of history and a specific interest in Civic Rights history. Recipient must be an undergraduate student with a true appreciation for history and Civil Rights history; all majors will be considered.
Kathy Killebrew Honorary Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships for students who exhibit a strong interest in the fine arts. Students must take two to four hours of fine arts classes during the semester the scholarship award is given. Students must have maintained at least an 80 average in high school. Students who are Stepping Out graduates will be given first consideration and priority. Student must be able to prove financial need.
Moody-Northen Endowment for Excellence was established by the Moody Foundation to provide scholarships for students majoring in fine arts.
Opening the Doors of Perception Scholarship was established in 2009 by Dr. Marty Kuhlman, associate professor in the Department of History. Recipient must be an undergraduate or graduate student who demonstrates enthusiasm for an open mind to education and must maintain a 2.5 GPA. All majors will be considered.
Peace, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll Scholarship was established in 2008 by Dr. Marty Kuhlman, associate professor in the Department of History. Kuhlman endowed this scholarship to assist students who have a deep appreciation of U.S. history since 1945. Recipient must be an undergraduate or graduate student and must have a true appreciation for U.S. history since 1945; all majors will be considered.
Janet Walker Music Scholarship was established by friends of Walker to honor her service and dedication to teaching and her love of music. Recipient must be enrolled in a music class, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and show leadership, integrity, and respect. Preference will be given to students from Dumas, Texas. If a recipient is not identified or selected, the scholarship committee may choose another recipient from Dumas, Texas that is not enrolled in a music class.
Department of Art, Theatre and Dance
Salem and Ruth Ann Abraham Endowed Dance Scholarship was established by Salem and Ruth Ann Abraham. Recipients must be dance majors enrolled full time (12 hours or more) and maintain a 2.5 GPA.
Art Club Scholarship was established from funds raised by the Art Club to recognize achievement and service. The recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) undergraduate or graduate art major with a cumulative 2.5 GPA or 3.0 GPA for graduate students.
Ilene Roberts Balliett Dance Scholarship was established in 2002 by the Lone Star Ballet. The recipient must be a current dancer with the Lone Star Ballet Company. This is a talent-base scholarship.
Royal L. Brantley Musical Theatre Scholarship was established in 1992 to recognize the years of outstanding choral and theatre direction provided by former WTAMU and Branding Iron Theatre musical/opera director and professor Brantley. The scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding WTAMU musical theatre major who has completed at least two regular semesters with a cumulative 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Emilio Caballero Memorial Art Scholarship was established in memory of Caballero who taught his first class of students at West Texas State University. His commitment to young art students spanned into five decades at the University and impacted the lives of thousands of students while also contributing significantly to the area’s cultural enrichment. The recipient must be an art major.
Billy Carr Creamer Memorial Scholarship was established to honor WTAMU alumnus Creamer and is awarded annually to students who are planning a career in theatre. Scholarship may be renewed if the student maintains a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Dance Development Fund-Scholarship was added in 2013 as a component to the fund. The selection criteria for the award will be determined by a competitive audition.
Louise and Bill Dee Scholarship was established in 1985 for junior, senior or graduate dance majors who have completed two regular semesters at WTAMU and maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Neil and Camille Hess Dance Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for students in the Dance Program. Preference for full-time students and dance majors; must have a minimum 2.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Charles Hohmann Endowment Fund was established in 1980 in memory of Hohmann, a graphic designer who worked in the Amarillo advertising market and helped establish the WTAMU graphic design program. This fund was established for students majoring in communication graphics.
Jim Kemmerling Drama Scholarship was established by Lois Hull in Jim Kemmerling’s honor to provide funding for drama students interested in set design and technical theatre. Recipient must be a full-time student and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Dr. David A. and Lucy S. LaBrie Theatre Scholarship was established by the LaBrie family in honor of David LaBrie. Recipient must be a theatre major; academic ability and theatre skills will be considered.
Lone Star Ballet Scholarship was established to build the dance program at WTAMU and provide a source of trained dancers for the LSB Company. Recipient must be a full-time dance major with a cumulative 2.5 GPA and 3.0 GPA in major. Recipient will be selected based on a competitive audition by the director of the dance program, in consultation with the LSB director of dance.
Alma C. Madden Visual Arts Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007 by Wales Madden, WTAMU Foundation Board member, in honor of his wife, Alma, who is an accomplished visual artist. Recipient must be a visual arts student with a 2.5 GPA or greater.
Mercer Theatre Scholars Scholarship was established in 2013 by the L. Jack “Jackie” Mercer Trust. Ms. Mercer was a graduate of West Texas Normal College and taught music in the public school system and supported fine arts endeavors in several communities. Scholarships will be awarded to exceptional incoming or continuing theatre majors based on talent, academic qualifications, service and leadership, demonstration of financial need, and potential for success. Recipients must be full-time theatre majors with a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Recipient will be selected based on a competitive audition by the theatre faculty. Scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
William A. and Margaret Moore Scholarship was established by family, friends and former students of William and Margaret Moore. Recipient must be a theatre or musical theatre major enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to students who have completed a minimum of 24 semester hours. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
William A. and Margaret Moore Theatre Scholarship was established with an initial gift from Lois Hull and gifts from family, friends and former students of William and Margaret Moore. Recipient must be a theatre or musical theatre major enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to students who have completed a minimum of 24 semester hours. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Georgia O’Keeffe Scholarship was established in 2000 to provide scholarships for and assist with recruitment and retention of outstanding studio art majors. Recipients must be full-time studio art students enrolled in required art courses; art portfolio and letters of recommendation must be submitted. Also, participation in annual student art exhibits. Recipient should possess the vision, passion and/or potential for excellence in the visual arts.
Don Ray Memorial Art Scholarship was established by family and friends of Ray as a tribute to his talent and love of learning. Recipient must be a junior, senior or graduate studio art major with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher. Preference will be given to student showing greatest financial need.
Isabel Robinson Art Scholarship was established in 1992 by Lois Hull, family, friends and former students of Robinson. Recipients must be junior, senior or graduate art majors enrolled a minimum of 12 hours per semester with a minimum of six hours in arts. A minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA and 3.0 GPA in major is required. This scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Emmitt and Alta Smith Scholarship, created in 1992 by the Tri-State Art Association to honor longtime WTAMU professor who made art his avocation and who helped found the association, provides scholarships to eligible art students. Recipient must be a full-time art major with preference to returning art students, demonstrated need and students with a cumulative 2.5 GPA with a 3.0 GPA in major.
USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology) Scholarship was established by the United States Institute of Theatre Technology to provide financial assistance for theatre design or technical theatre students. Recipient must be an active theatre student and must be a theatre design or technical theatre student and must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Recipient must complete the USITT scholarship application available through the department.
Department of Communication
Amarillo Advertising Club Scholarship is awarded to students of sophomore standing or higher who have at least a 2.5 GPA, are interested in an advertising career and participate in the WTAMU Advertising Federation. Financial need may be considered.
Mark A. Benton Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Benton who passed away in 2012. He was a mass communication major who loved radio, newspapers, television, and community service. The recipient must be a junior or senior mass communication major who has completed at least 60 hours or 18 hours in major and is an aspiring journalist. Additionally, the student must be a community service volunteer.
Cabot Journalism Scholarships were established in 1964 to provide scholarships for outstanding journalism students.
Lula Mae Irons Camp Endowment Scholarship was established by family and friends of Camp with earnings from the endowment used for a scholarship for a journalism major preparing for a journalism career.
Kay Winkler Fuqua Scholarship, established in 1994 to honor the memory of Fuqua, provides scholarships to students majoring in speech. Requirements include that students be deserving speech majors, maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA and be at least of junior standing; renewable.
Journalism Advisory Committee Scholarship Endowment Fund awards annual scholarships to journalism majors planning careers in journalism. Applications should be accompanied by at least one letter of recommendation from a journalism educator or professional journalist.
Bill R. Lee Scholarship was established in memory of Lee who taught in the Journalism Program from 1952-81. The scholarship is awarded annually to a junior, senior or graduate journalism major who has completed two regular semesters at WTAMU and has a minimum 3.0 GPA on all work completed in journalism.
PASO Scholarship was established by Panhandle Aids Support Organization (PASO) in 2007 and will be awarded to a broadcasting major; preference will be given to students with greatest financial need.
Garet von Netzer Journalism Scholarship was established in 1994 by family and friends of von Netzer to provide scholarships to deserving junior, senior or graduate students with 3.0 GPA majoring in journalism.
S.B. Whittenburg Journalism Scholarship was established in 1988 by family and friends of retired publisher of the Amarillo Globe-News and 18-year regent of Texas A&M University. Recipients must be journalism majors, have attended at least two regular semesters at WTAMU, attained junior standing and maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA. An essay on free enterprise is required.
Ann Wingo Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Speech was established in 2013 by the L. Jack “Jackie” Mercer Trust. Ms. Mercer was a graduate of West Texas Normal College and taught music in the public school system and supported fine arts endeavors in several communities. Scholarships will be awarded to exceptional incoming or continuing communication studies majors based on talent, academic qualifications, service and leadership, demonstration of financial need, and potential for success. Recipients must be full-time communication studies majors with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and 3.25 in major. Scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Guy Yates Forensics Scholarship was established in 1994 to award annual scholarships to deserving students in forensics. Recipient must travel with the WTAMU speech team, maintain a 3.0 GPA and be involved in community service.
You Make My Dreams Come True Scholarship was established by Dr. Marty Kuhlman in honor of Dr. Leigh Browning, who has helped facilitate Dr. Kuhlman’s time at KWTS 91.1, the voice of WTAMU for thousands of students. Recipient must be a broadcasting major and member of the student management team for KWTS 91.1.
Department of English, Philosophy and Modern Languages
Loula Grace Erdman Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and former students of Erdman. Undergraduate or graduate students who show unusual promise in creative writing are eligible.
Evelyn and Kenneth E. Frieze English Scholarship was established in memory of Evelyn Frieze, long-time English teacher, and her husband. Undergraduate and graduate English majors who demonstrate a love for language and literature.
Dr. Ples Harper Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Harper, a member of the modern languages faculty from 1946-74. The scholarship is awarded to Spanish majors who intend to teach or pursue graduate studies. Recipient must have completed 60 hours of course work, i.e., junior standing.
A.K. Knott Scholarship was established by friends and former students of Knott, who taught in the English department from 1940 until his retirement in 1973. Junior or senior English majors who show unusual promise for teaching are eligible.
Mattie Swayne Mack Scholarship was established in 1972 by Dr. Phyllis Bridges and other former students of Mack. WTAMU graduates who plan graduate work in English at WTAMU are eligible for the scholarship. Need and scholarship will be considered.
Helen White Moore Scholarship was established by friends and former students of Moore, who retired from the English faculty in 1976. Junior or senior English majors who show promise for teaching are eligible.
Richard and Donna Moseley English Academic Scholarship was established by Dr. Richard and Mrs. Donna Moseley. Recipient will be a full-time English major with a strong academic record.
Pat Sullivan Scholarship was established in 1991 by faculty, friends and former students of Sullivan, long-time WTAMU faculty member. English or English education majors are eligible.
Maria D. Tarrab Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Tarrab, a member of the language faculty from 1972-79. The scholarship is awarded to a junior, senior or graduate language major planning a career in Spanish. Recipient must have completed at least two semesters at WTAMU and maintained at least a 3.0 GPA in course work within the major.
Arlin Turner Memorial Scholarship was established in 1980 by family, friends and former students of Turner, author, editor, professor and distinguished graduate of WTAMU. Eligible for the scholarship are deserving junior or senior English majors.
Patricia O’Neill Ware Scholarship was established by Ware for deserving English students. Recipient must be a female English major, and preference will be given to a returning student who is a single parent.
Department of History
Break On Through to the Other Side Scholarship was established by Dr. Marty Kuhlman, associate professor in the Department of History, who has a passion for teaching and helping students. Recipient must be a history major and must maintain a 2.5 GPA with preference given based on need.
Marcia Caldwell Scholarship was established in 1974 by Caldwell to provide a scholarship to students preferably majoring in history.
Colonel Richard Henry Lee and Daniel Wing Chapters Texas Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century Scholarship was established through gifts from the Colonel Richard Henry Lee and Daniel Wing Chapters Texas Society Colonial Dames XVII Century. Recipient must be enrolled in the graduate program in history and have an interest in early American history.
Mary Elizabeth Davidson Scholarship was established in 1990 to honor this WTAMU faculty member, who served from 1957 until retirement in 1983 and was selected winner of the Faculty Excellence Award in 1970. The scholarship offers incentive and financial assistance to history majors.
Maxine Durrett Earl Charitable Foundation Scholarship in History was established in memory of Earl. Recipient must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in history with preference to Garza county students; second preference to the following counties: Gaines, Dawson, Borden, Scurry, Kent, Lynn, Terry, Yoakum, Cochran, Hockley, Lubbock, Crosby, Dickens, Motley, Floyd, Hale, Lamb and Bailey. Third preference to the following counties: Andrews, Martin, Howard, Mitchell, Nolan, Taylor, Callahan, Shackelford, Jones, Fisher, Stonewall, Haskell, Throckmorton, Baylor, Knox, King, Cottle, Foard, Wilbarger, Hardeman, Childress, Hall, Briscoe, Swisher, Castro, Parmer, Deaf Smith, Randall, Armstrong, Donley, Collingworth, Wheeler, Gray, Carson, Potter, Oldham, Hartley, Moore, Hutchinson, Roberts, Hemphill, Lipscomb, Ochiltree, Hansford, Sherman, Dallas, and the following counties in New Mexico: Chaves, Lea, Roosevelt, Curry and Quay. Additionally, th e student must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Forman/Rathjen History Scholarship was established in 1999 to honor Rathjen who was a professor in the Department of History. Recipient must be a graduate or have upper level classification majoring in history or education with an emphasis on history. Preference will be given to researchers in Texas topics, but awards may also be made to students conducting research in other historical fields. Also, past performance and potential of the individual may be taken into consideration. Additionally, GPA will be a factor in evaluation, but not necessarily the determinant.
Frank and Patsy Heflin Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for full-time junior and senior students with an overall 3.0 GPA. First preference will be given to history majors and second preference to elementary education majors. Renewable if criteria are met.
Magical History Tour Scholarship was established by Dr. Marty Kuhlman, associate professor in the Department of History, to assist students who have a deep appreciation of history. Recipient must be an outstanding student from one of the HIST 3314 , HIST 4312 , HIST 4313 or HIST 4321 classes.
Troy F. Martin Memorial Scholarship was established in the Martin’s name as a reflection of his love and involvement with WTAMU throughout the 24 years he published The Canyon News. The recipient must be a junior or senior history or geography major with a cumulative 3.0 GPA. In the event a qualified applicant with a major of history or geography is not available, the scholarship may be awarded to an English major. The scholarship is renewable for one additional year as long as the criteria are met.
SFC O.R. and 1SG Shirley C. Nichols History Scholarship was established in 2010 by Shirley to celebrate and commemorate the love and respect she and her late husband, O.R., shared for each other and for the many students who passed through their military career lives. Recipient must be a full-time student in the Department of History with preference to graduate students in the Department of History. Also, preference will be given based on need. Additionally, the student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Peter L. Petersen History Scholarship was established by friends and family of Petersen to provide scholarships for full-time (12 semester hours) WTAMU students majoring in history. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Phi Alpha Theta History Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide scholarships to history majors who are members of Phi Alpha Theta in good standing.
Retired Professors Scholarship for History and Geography was established in 1994 from gifts given by retired professors of history and political science, their colleagues, family and friends. Recipients must be majoring in history and geography.
Sheffy-Anderson Scholarship Fund was established in 1959. Interest from the fund provides a scholarship for a junior, senior or graduate student majoring in history. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Both Dr. L.F. Sheffy and Dr. Hattie M. Anderson were long-time WTAMU faculty members and guiding founders of Panhandle-Plains Historical Society and Museum.
Smith-Sheffy Fund was established by Dr. L.F. Sheffy to provide scholarships to worthy and deserving junior, senior and graduate students majoring in history.
Texas Panhandle/Amarillo History Scholarship was established by Mrs. Stanley Marsh 3 in honor of her husband, Stanley Marsh 3. This scholarship will be awarded to a talented and needy student interested in studying and writing about Amarillo or Texas Panhandle history.
Department of Music
Amarillo Music Teachers Association Scholarship provides scholarships for students majoring in keyboard.
Amarillo Symphony Scholarship, established in 1950 by the Amarillo Symphony, provides tuition and fees to qualified music majors playing with the symphony.
Archer Viola Scholarship was established by Carajean and Dr. Branch Archer to benefit violists in the Department of Music. This is a financial need-based scholarship.
Richard and Noreen Bales Music Scholarship was established in 2000 by gifts in honor of Richard Bales, on his retirement as minister of the First United Methodist Church of Canyon, to provide scholarships for full-time (12 hours) students majoring in instrumental, keyboard or vocal music with a 2.5 GPA.
Alton Wayne Bassett Music Scholarship was established by LaNelle B. Winn in memory of Bassett. Recipient must be a full-time music major, preferably piano or voice; renewable.
J.D. Bayless Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established by James D. and Maxine Bayless Sr. and other contributors for undergraduate voice music majors planning a career in music. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Janie Branch Endowed Music Scholarship was established by Lisa Nussbaum and Jennifer Branch in memory of their mother, Janie Branch. Recipient must be an entering freshman who is majoring in music performance; full-time (12 semester hours) student; maintain a 3.0 GPA; and must have participated in either a school or community music program; renewable.
Royal Brantley Vocal Scholarship was established in 1997 to provide scholarships for voice students majoring in music education, music therapy and music business. Recipient must have completed one year of study at WTAMU and must exhibit musical ability, talent and academic excellence.
Pauline Brigham Memorial Scholarship was established in 1977 in memory of Brigham, a member of the music faculty from 1917-1961. The scholarship is awarded annually to a music major with preference to a pianist.
Houston Bright Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide scholarships for students participating in the WTAMU choirs. Recipients must be deserving students whose outstanding vocal talent and leadership add to the quality of the WTAMU choral program.
Paula Britt Fine Arts Scholarship was established in support of music students. Recipient will be a worthy undergraduate student from the Texas Panhandle (northernmost 26 counties); must have completed their freshman year; financial need considered; preference given to a student with a music related major; and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Cansler Ranch Scholarship was established in 2008 by the Allen Cansler family, longtime supporters of WTAMU and voice students. Recipient must be a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate music major; must be a voice student and must maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA.
Dr. Howard Andrew Chamblin Memorial Music Scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Howard Andrew Chamblin by his parents, Ed and Caroline Chamblin, and friends. Dr. Chamblin earned a degree in mathematics from Rice University and his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Cambridge University. He was a highly accomplished scholar, and his work was regarded to be amongst the best in the field. Dr. Chamblin also loved music, studying keyboard both at WTAMU and under the direction of Amarillo Symphony Conductor, Robert Bernhardt. Recipient will be a keyboard major and must maintain a 3.0 GPA; renewable if criteria are met.
Billie Jeanne Hartness Davis Music Scholarship was established in memory of Davis by family and friends. Preference to students studying piano and/or voice.
Directors Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 to benefit full-time (12 hours per semester) undergraduate WTAMU students majoring in instrumental music education from the Texas Panhandle region and to honor the memory of deceased band directors of Region I.
Martha Estes Music Therapy Scholarship is presented to a WTAMU student of sophomore, junior or senior standing pursuing a career in music therapy.
David Fennell Memorial Scholarship was established to provide assistance to students majoring in band, orchestra.
First Chair Violin Student String Quartet Scholarship was established to attract and retain the quality of string students that WT’s program has become accustomed. Recipient must be accepted at WTAMU, major in music, audition for the music department and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
June and Dorothy Franks Piano Scholarship was established in 2003 by Noel Thurner in memory of her mother Dorothy Franks Thurner, an artist who found great satisfaction in encouraging the development of talent in others. Also, this scholarship honors Thurner’s childhood friend, Dr. Denise Parr-Scanlin. In 2008, the scholarship was renamed to also honor Thurner’s aunt, June Franks Montgomery. Recipient must be a piano major and demonstrate dedication to piano studies through practice and performance. The student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in major applied lessons, maintain a passing grade in music recital attendance and maintain an overall 3.0 GPA. Each recipient will receive a yearly evaluation by piano faculty and the department head for consideration of continuation of the scholarship. Preference will be given to an incoming freshman; transfer students will be considered.
Garner Band and Orchestra Scholarship was created in 1987 by former students, friends and colleagues to recognize Garner’s outstanding work on the occasion of his 25th year as a faculty member at WTAMU. Scholarships are awarded to members of the WTAMU Band and WTAMU Orchestra. Musicianship, attitude, need, and contributions to the band or orchestra will be considered.
Mariellen Garner Band Scholarship was established in 1994 by gifts from family and friends of Garner, long-time friend of WTAMU band students and a tireless band fund-raiser. The scholarship provides funds to WTAMU band students. Musicianship, attitude, need and contribution to the band will be considered. Renewable if criteria are met.
Matilda Gaume Music Scholarship was established in 2002 by Delpha Gard, friends and former students of Matilda Gaume to provide scholarships to students majoring in music. The student must have completed two semesters at WTAMU with a minimum 2.5 GPA; renewable if criteria are met.
Matilda Gaume Music Scholarship II was established in 2006 by Delpha Gard, Matilda’s sister, as a lasting tribute to Matilda who was a member of the music faculty at WTAMU for more than 30 years. The student must be a music major, completed at least two semesters at WTAMU with a minimum 2.5 GPA; renewable if criteria are met.
Mila Gibson Voice Scholarship was established in 2012. Gibson was an outstanding music student at WT who after graduate and doctoral work taught opera workshop and voice at Amarillo College. She founded Amarillo Opera in 1988 and under her leadership, Amarillo Opera was accepted as a professional member of Opera America. Recipient must be a voice major transferring from Amarillo College, enrolled full-time, and pursuing any of the music degrees for which voice is an applied music requirement with preference to performance majors. The student must be recommended by the voice faculty at AC and selected by audition by the voice faculty at WT. The scholarship is renewable for a second year provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA. Student must audition and perform in Amarillo Opera’s two main productions.
Eleanor Glazener Student String Quartet Scholarship was established by Glazener in 2005 to provide a scholarship to a deserving WTAMU string student. The gift was matched by the WTAMU Foundation to endow the scholarship. The recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) student with a cumulative 2.5 GPA and 3.0 GPA in major. Preference will be given to a string student, but a WTAMU orchestra student playing a different instrument may be considered. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Paula Jane Hill Memorial Scholarship was endowed by parents and friends of Hill in her memory to recognize outstanding achievement in music. Recipients must be a sophomore, junior or senior music major with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Mary Jane Johnson Scholarship was established by friends and family of Johnson to provide scholarships for voice students majoring in performance, music education, music therapy or music business. Recipients are selected by the music faculty and must be returning music majors at WTAMU. Additionally, they must exhibit musical ability, talent and academic excellence.
Kappa Kappa Psi Scholarship was established in 1949 and provides $100 to a freshman student with outstanding music ability. Applicants are selected during the fall semester for outstanding contribution to WTAMU band.
Betty Kilpatrick Kline Piano Scholarship was established in 2007 in honor of Kline who taught piano and music theory for 22 years in Amarillo. Recipient must be a graduate of a Texas Panhandle School who is majoring in piano; enrolled full-time (12 semester hours) as a junior or senior or enrolled nine semester hours as a graduate student; and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to nontraditional students and students showing financial need. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Grace M. Krause Scholarship was established in 2007 by family of Krause to honor her memory and all her lifetime achievements. She was an avid music lover and supporter of the WTAMU music department. Recipient must be a music major whose primary instrument is the oboe and must have a 3.0 GPA or better.
Robert J. Krause Honorary Scholarship was established by James and Janet Durham in honor of Krause, professor of oboe at WTAMU. Recipient must be a music major whose primary instrument is the oboe.
Dr. David A. and Lucy S. LaBrie Vocal Scholarship was established by Lucy S. LaBrie. Recipient must be a second-semester freshman or beyond; major in voice, music education, vocal performance, music therapy or music business. Criteria include exemplary work in vocal studies, ability, dedication and need.
McCulley-Porter Endowment Fund was established to provide scholarships to members of Mu Phi Epsilon and non-member music majors. Recipients must be sophomore, junior and senior music majors who promote music and have financial need.
McEntyre-Haines Music Scholarship was established in 1999 by gifts from J.R. McEntyre, Harry Haines and others to provide scholarships for music students from Permian High School who are attending WTAMU. Leadership, music and academic achievement will be considered.
Mercer Music Scholars Scholarship was established in 2013 by the L. Jack “Jackie” Mercer Trust. Ms. Mercer was a graduate of West Texas Normal College and taught music in the public school system and supported fine arts endeavors in several communities. Scholarships will be awarded to exceptional incoming freshmen music majors and based on talent, academic qualifications, service and leadership, demonstration of financial need, and potential for success. Recipients must be full-time music majors with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and 3.25 in major. Recipient will be selected based on a competitive audition by the music faculty with preference given to string players and to other underserved areas. Scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
L. Jack “Jackie” Mercer Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Music was established in 2013 by the L. Jack “Jackie” Mercer Trust. Ms. Mercer was a graduate of West Texas Normal College and taught music in the public school system and supported fine arts endeavors in several communities. Scholarship will be awarded to an exceptional full-time incoming freshman music major and based on talent, academic qualifications, service and leadership, demonstration of financial need, and potential for success. Student must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA and 3.5 or better in major. Recipient will be selected based on a competitive audition by the music faculty. Scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Dudley Moore Band Award was established in 1999 to provide an annual award to an outstanding band member. Recipient must exemplify the spirit and attitude of dedication exhibited by Dr. Moore, long-time friend and supporter of the WTAMU Band.
David Murray Double Bass Scholarship is the first scholarship exclusively for bassists and honors Murray who served as bass professor at WTAMU from 1985-1997. His studio became one of the largest bass studios in the history of the University. Recipient must be an incoming freshman or returning music major studying double bass as his/her primary instrument.
Orchestra Activities Scholarship awards funds to music majors and members of the University orchestra. Recipients must generally have a 2.75 gpa or higher with consideration to need and leadership.
Dr. Sue Park Music Scholarship was established by the WTAMU Department of Music in honor of Park’s 40 years of dedicated service to the University and long-time dean of the Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities. Recipient must be a junior music major, receive a letter of nomination from a member of the music faculty and maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA. Preference will be given to students who parallel Park’s character of leadership, involvement in the music program, and being a nice person and good representative of the University.
Elsa Porter Applied Voice Scholarship, established in 1993, provides annual scholarships for applied voice majors at WTAMU.
Dr. Kenneth and Marion Porter Applied Piano and Applied Vocal Music Scholarship was established in 2000 by the Porters to provide scholarships to WTAMU students pursuing a degree in music, with a major in voice or piano. This scholarship is for a full-time (12 hours) student, sophomore or above, with a 3.0 GPA studying applied piano or applied vocal music. Financial need will be considered; renewable if criteria are met.
Asalie Key Price Vocal Scholarship was established in 1997 by friends and family of Price to honor his memory and provide scholarships to full-time (12 hours per semester) WTAMU students majoring in voice who demonstrate academic excellence.
David G. Ritter Trumpet Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide a scholarship to a current trumpet student, who will be continuing next year, for outstanding work in the trumpet studio.
Hugh Sanders Scholarship was established in 2000 by donations from chorale alumni and others to provide a scholarship in vocal music education. The recipient of this scholarship must be a vocal music education major, full-time undergraduate student with a 2.5 GPA and completed at least 30 hours.
Gail and Helen Shannon Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Dr. Gail and Ms. Helen Shannon. Applicants must have completed two regular semesters at WTAMU, attained junior/senior/graduate standing, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and exhibit outstanding leadership qualities. Special consideration will be given to students majoring in music and fine arts.
Showcase Dinner Fund was established in 2000 by donations received from guests to the WTAMU Showcase of Music dinner and profits from WTAMU Band Camp to provide scholarships to WTAMU students pursuing a degree in music.
C.E. Strain Band Fund Scholarship was established by Jenie Lee Burke, Jr. and Joyce Gross Burk of Hobbs, New Mexico, through a 100-year trust set up in 1972. The funds are available for program and student support. Recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) junior, senior or graduate student with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Also, the recipient must be a member of the WTAMU band and open to all majors. The scholarship may be renewed at the discretion of the department.
Tau Beta Sigma Scholarship was established in 1950 by Tau Beta Sigma and is awarded in the amount of $100 to a freshman student of outstanding music ability. Applicants are selected during the fall semester for outstanding contribution to WTAMU Band.
Marcia McEntyre Zoffuto Music Fund-Scholarship was established by family and friends of Zoffuto to have a selection of music composed to memorialize her with remaining funds to award scholarships. Recipient must be a music major in good academic standing.
College of Nursing and Health Sciences
Michael Ley Feland and Candice Leigh Feland Scholarship was established in memory of Michael and Candice. Michael had a love for sports and in 1976, accepted a football scholarship from WTAMU, formerly WTSU and in 1977 was a part of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship winning team. He considered family and friends very important and provided a good life for his family. Candice attended Claude ISD and received many academic awards and recognitions. She was very close to her family and friends and always had a sense of humor. Candice had a zest for life and lived it to the fullest. Recipient must be a Department of Nursing or Department of Sports and Exercise major with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference will be given to students with financial need.
Greater Texas Foundation-Bruckner Family Foundation Removing Educational Barriers Scholarship was established by Ben and Peggy Bruckner in partnership with the Greater Texas Foundation. Peggy is a WTAMU alumna and wanted to provide scholarships to support the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Recipient must be enrolled a minimum of 12 hours per semester and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. All majors within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences will be considered, and preference will be given based on need.
Greater Texas Foundation-Kathryn Davis Acton, RN Removing Educational Barriers Scholarship was established in partnership with the Greater Texas Foundation and honors Acton who dedicated more than 40 years to caring for others as well as educating other nurses. Acton helped start an LVN school in Hereford, Texas, where she has played an integral role in caring for the community. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate (12 hours per semester) or graduate student (nine hours per semester) and have a 2.5 GPA in core curriculum classes and a 3.0 GPA in major. All majors within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences will be considered with preference to students who demonstrate financial need.
Department of Communication Disorders
Panhandle Regional Speech and Hearing Association Scholarship was established in 2000 for worthy and deserving junior, senior or graduate speech pathology majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA overall. Preference will be given to returning students and is renewable when criteria are met.
Department of Nursing
Martha Allison Nursing Scholarship was established in 2011 by Dr. Walter Allison as a Christmas gift to his wife, Martha, in honor of her many years of professional dedication. She was a dedicated nurse throughout her career serving in hospitals, cancer centers, and private practice. Recipient must be a nursing major or current registered nurse pursuing a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing with a 2.8 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Dr. Hazel Aslakson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1993 in memory of Aslakson by her family. Aslakson was the first dean of nursing and responsible for establishing the Department of Nursing. The annual award is presented to a nursing major of junior, senior or graduate standing with a minimum “B” average. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Joseph and Rhoanna (Griego) Austin Scholarship was established by Joseph (Joe) and Rhoanna (Rho) who met and graduated from WTAMU. They have an appreciation for the individual attention and encouragement provided by their professors as well as the overall “caring” environment that WTAMU provides. The Austins believe in the importance of a quality education in ensuring a high quality of life and want to help provide the opportunity to others. Recipient must be an incoming freshman majoring in information and decision management or nursing, enrolled full time, and have a “B+” average (85 or higher) or 3.25 GPA. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Mary E. Bivins Memorial Scholarship was established by the Mary E. Bivins Foundation to honor the memory of Mary Elizabeth Bivins and the commitment she had to the care of older people. Additionally, the scholarship was created to help curb the nursing shortage in the Texas Panhandle. Recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) nursing major and maintain an overall 2.5 GPA and 3.0 GPA in major. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in geriatric nursing and eldercare.
Lois Bose/AORN North Texas Panhandle Nursing Scholarship was established in 1995 to provide one scholarship to the junior nursing student with the highest grade point average and one scholarship to a worthy and deserving student with average grade point average.
Virginia Breiner Scholarship, established in 1991 from the estate of Breiner, former nursing instructor, provides scholarships for nursing majors with average grade point averages.
Deborah Bridges Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established in 2000 by Dr. Phyllis Bridges in memory of her sister, Deborah Bridges, and in honor of the intensive care nurses at Northwest Texas Hospital who cared for her in her final illness. It provides scholarships for WTAMU nursing students with preference given to nursing students interested in intensive care nursing.
Sally and John Carmen Endowed Scholarship in Nursing was established by the Carmens, proud WT alumni. Recipient must be a junior nursing major with a minimum 3.4 GPA. Scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Former Nursing Faculty Endowment was established by friends and family in honor of former nursing faculty. Criteria to be determined by the Nursing Scholarship Committee.
Winifred Gass Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1984 by persons who knew and loved Gass, director of nursing of the Texas Department of Human Resources, Region I, and friend of the Department of Nursing. Nursing majors who have completed at least 30 semester hours as nursing majors and who have a minimum 2.5 GPA overall on all work completed at the college level are eligible for the scholarship.
Christopher Cory Golden Memorial Nursing Provost Leadership Scholarship was established in 2008 in memory of Christopher Golden by Drew, Reggie and Sarah Golden. Recipient must be a graduate nursing student enrolled in nine semester hours who demonstrates service through leadership and has a strong interest in neonatal nursing care. The student must have at least a 3.0 GPA in major field of study.
Harrington Nursing Scholarship was established by gifts from Don and Sybil Harrington and the Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation. Interest from the endowment is awarded to full-time (12 hours per semester) freshman and continuing nursing majors. Incoming freshmen must have a minimum 21 ACT score and continuing students must have a minimum 2.8 GPA. The student must sign a commitment statement to work in the Texas Panhandle for one year for each year of scholarship support.
Betty Henry Nursing Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 to provide scholarships to faculty in the Department of Nursing pursuing doctoral degrees at WTAMU or other institutions of higher education. If there is no faculty doctoral candidate, an award will be made to an undergraduate nursing student.
T.H. Holloway Nursing Scholarship was established in 2001 by Baptist Community Services and High Plains Christian Ministries Foundation to honor Holloway and to provide an annual scholarship to a student in the Department of Nursing on a non-renewable basis. This scholarship is directed to the student with most financial need.
Hospice of Canyon Volunteers Scholarship provides scholarships for nursing majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA from one of the northernmost 26 counties in the Texas Panhandle.
Lee S. and Doris M. Jinkins Scholarship Fund was established in 1984 by the Brown Group Inc. Charitable Trust and other contributors who knew and loved the Jinkins. Nursing majors planning a career in nursing with overall minimum 3.0 GPAs on all work completed at the college level, or who have exhibited academic excellence in high school if they are incoming freshmen, are eligible.
Betty Kembel Nursing Scholarship provides scholarships for LVNs and RNs returning for a bachelor’s degree. Recipient must have a 2.5 GPA or higher.
Anna Belle Kritser II Foundation Nursing Scholarship was established in 2011 by the Anna Belle Kritser II Foundation. Recipient must be a junior nursing major enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given based on need. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Alvin and Liselotte Kuhlman Nursing Scholarship was established by Dr. Marty Kuhlman in honor of his parents, Alvin and Liselotte Kuhlman, and to honor the nursing profession for their excellence. Recipient will be a nursing student with a minimum 2.70 GPA and based primarily on financial need.
Jensen Carter Laszakovits Nursing Scholarship was established by Dr. Harry and Maryann Hueston in memory of their grandson, Jensen Carter Laszakovits. Recipient must be enrolled in the Department of Nursing, interested in pediatrics, postpartum or labor and delivery. Applicants must be a single parent taking a minimum of nine hours and must have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall and 3.0 GPA in their major.
Dale and Joyce McKee Nursing Scholarship was established in 2007 by the McKees to fund a nursing scholarship. Recipients must be nursing majors with a 3.0 GPA.
Nursing Student’s Scholarship Fund was established to award scholarships to senior nursing students.
Lorilie O’Donald/Melanie Mickey Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in 1983 by friends and family of O’Donald and Mickey, is available to all nursing students.
Palo Duro Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund was established by donations from the South Randall County Hospital District and others to provide scholarships for full-time (12 semester hours) senior nursing students who wish to pursue a career in nursing. Grade point average and financial need will be considered. Additionally, preference will be given to students who demonstrate leadership and commitment to the nursing profession.
Dipakben J. Patel Endowed Scholarship was established by gifts from Dr. and Mrs. Suryakant J. Patel and friends to provide scholarships to junior, senior or graduate students with a minimum 3.0 GPA with preference to a female in nursing, social work or teaching education.
Anita Thigpen Perry Nursing Excellence Endowment was established in 2001 by WTAMU, Amarillo/Canyon medical communities and friends of Governor and Mrs. Perry to honor the first lady of Texas, a 1974 nursing graduate of West Texas A&M University. The scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students that have been admitted to the nursing program. Additionally, they must be in good academic standing and show financial need.
Potter-Randall County Medical Alliance Nursing Scholarship provides scholarships for full-time students majoring in nursing or allied health field with plans to seek employment in the Texas Panhandle. The recipient must have a 3.0 GPA, never have been on disciplinary probation, show reasonable progress toward a degree and demonstrate financial need.
The Ed and Margaret Roberts Nursing Scholarship was established in 2010 by the Ed and Margaret Roberts Foundation. Recipient must be a full-time (12 semester hours) junior nursing major with a minimum 3.0 GPA and preference based on need. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Nell Robinson Book Scholarship for Nursing Students was established by Mrs. Joe Findley in memory of her aunt, Nell, who was superintendent of East Liverpool (Ohio) City Hospital for 40 years. Recipient must be a nursing major with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Request assistant with books by submitting a written request for support which outlines the amount requested and the student’s financial need.
Saint Anthony’s Auxiliary Scholarship in Nursing and Allied Health was established to provide scholarships for nursing and allied health majors. Recipients must be accepted in the nursing or the allied health program, be at least a sophomore student and be enrolled in a minimum of six semester hours. Grades and financial need will be considered. Priority will be given to BSA employees. This scholarship is renewable as long as criteria are met.
School of Nursing Scholarship Fund was established to award annual scholarships to nursing majors planning a career in any area of nursing. Recipients must have completed at least two regular semesters at WTAMU and maintained a 2.5 GPA overall.
The Laura Street Nursing Scholarship was established in 2013 by Joe and Laura Street. The recipient must be a junior nursing major with a minimum 3.0 GPA with preference to students that demonstrate financial need. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
James D. Taylor Oncological Nursing Scholarship was established in 2009 by Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center board of directors in recognition of Taylor’s contributions and dedicated service to Harrington Cancer Center. Taylor grew up in Lefors, Texas, and spent the majority of his career serving the medical community in the Texas Panhandle region. Recipient must be a junior, senior or graduate nursing major enrolled full time (12 hours per semester if undergraduate and nine hours per semester if graduate). Also, student must have a strong interest in pursuing an oncological nursing career as evidenced by a written statement of interest in oncology accompanying the application. Texas Paralyzed Veterans Association Scholarship-Panhandle Subchapter provides scholarships to junior or senior nursing majors; preference given to son or daughter of veteran.
Mary Cecile Powell Truitt Gerontological Nursing Scholarship was established in 1999 by Mary C. Truitt in memory of her parents, Cecil Victor Powell and Mary Louise Dew Powell, to provide scholarships to students in the Department of Nursing. The recipient must be a full-time student (12 semester hours) with a “B” or “C” average, junior or senior standing and interest in gerontological nursing. It is renewable if criteria continue to be met.
Matt Vaughn Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established as a memorial to Vaughn. This scholarship will be awarded to students who have completed an R.N. degree enrolled in a minimum of nine semester hours with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Crystelle Waggoner Charitable Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee Nursing Scholarship was established in 2011. Recipient must be a junior nursing major enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) with a 3.0 GPA. Recipient must provide character references from non-family members and write a letter about themselves and submit to the Nursing Department. Preference will be given based on need. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
Julie Barrett Weise Memorial Scholarship in Nursing was established in memory of Julie Barrett Weise through gifts and memorials from friends and family. Weise graduated from Canyon High School and in 2003 received a B.S.N. degree in nursing from WTAMU. Recipient must be a nursing major and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Recipient also must be compassionate, caring, willing to give back to the University and community, and a Texas resident. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
WTAMU Nursing Health Fairs for the Homeless Scholarship was established by friends of the WTAMU Nursing’s Health Fairs for the Homeless. Recipients must be nursing students.
Department of Sports and Exercise Sciences
Dr. Mary L. Green Sports and Exercise Sciences Scholarship was established in 2012 by gifts from the estate of Green, a graduate of the Department of Sports and Exercise Sciences. Recipient must be a Sports and Exercise Science major.
Jack Griswold Scholarship Fund was established by gifts from friends and family of Griswold. The scholarship is awarded to junior, senior or graduate health, physical education and recreation majors planning a career in coaching. Students must have completed at least two regular semesters at WTAMU and have a minimum 3.0 GPA in their major.
Borden Price Endowment Scholarship Fund was established in 1966 by family, friends and former students of Price and provides awards annually to an outstanding major of the department. Applicants must be at least of junior standing and have a 3.0 GPA in the major.
Allene J. Stovall Scholarship Fund was established in 1980 by Delta Psi Kappa, friends and former students as a tribute to Stovall and her dedication to WTAMU. From interest earned, scholarships are provided to full-time health, physical education and/or recreation majors who exemplify characteristics of Stovall and who have a minimum of 70 semester hours with a 3.0 GPA.
Ryan Strong Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and colleagues of Ryan’s wife, Lorna Strong, head of the Sports and Exercise Sciences Department. The scholarship was developed as a way for Ryan to continue to positively influence students that represent his character. In 2013, the scholarship was endowed by the gifts of many family, friends and colleagues. Recipients must be enrolled full-time (12 semester hours) with a minimum 45 hours completed and two semesters at WTAMU with a cumulative 2.75 GPA. Also, recipient must be majoring in athletic training or SES with plans to coach and teach. Additionally, preference will be given to students who show evidence of co-curricular, extracurricular, or service activities that support the academic preparation; evidence of leadership in these activities along with leadership in classroom/academic setting; and evidence of personal characteristics that embody the memory of Strong.
