Students may select from one of three programs of study: the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) program, which is a comprehensive master’s degree program focusing on advanced concepts in nursing education and management and leadership for administrative roles; the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) M.S.N. program, which prepares students for the specialized role of family nurse practitioner; and the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) M.S.N. program, which prepares nurses for specialized mental health care in all areas.
The comprehensive master’s degree is all online except for practica experiences which students may choose to explore at their current place of employment as a Registered Nurse. The FNP program is offered in a hybrid format; students complete online course work and meet monthly during clinical semesters. A post-master’s FNP course of study is available for nurses with an M.S.N. degree who seek to become FNPs.
The M.S.N. program in nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Students who select the FNP role are eligible to apply for State Board of Nursing approval to practice as an FNP after successfully passing a national certification examination.
Both the Bivins Nursing Learning Center, located on WTAMU’s Canyon campus, and the Harrington Academic Hall, located on WTAMU’s Amarillo campus, have skills labs, including simulation, and classrooms. Clinical experience is provided in health-care facilities in Amarillo, Canyon and surrounding rural areas. RN to B.S.N. degree students make arrangements for clinical sites with the program coordinator.
