Since West Texas A&M University was founded in 1910, its roots have been in the teacher education program. A major purpose of the Department of Education is to prepare individuals for professional positions as teachers, counselors, administrators and other support service positions for both public and private schools at elementary and secondary levels. WTAMU is proud of its tradition of providing outstanding students through its graduate education programs.

Doctoral Degree Program

The West Texas A&M University’s Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership is a fully online Ed.D. degree program that has three Pathways. Pathway One prepares individuals to lead rural schools and to teach educational leadership within a university setting. Pathway Two prepares individuals for leadership positions within higher education and educational organizations. Pathway Three prepares leaders in the areas of educational business and finance. Although the program focuses on rural school leadership, all three Pathways equip educational leaders with a wide variety of tools to lead in any school district, university, or organization of any size, and in any location.

Admission Requirements for Doctoral Degree Program

One cohort per Pathway will be admitted annually each fall semester for a spring start date. The number of candidates in a cohort will be limited through a competitive selection process. The deadline for application is 5:00 p.m. on September 15. Candidates will be notified on or before November 1st as to acceptance. Applications received after the deadline will be considered in the following year’s review.

Applicants for the Ed.D. degree must hold a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from accredited institutions with at least one degree in education or a closely related discipline. Please find additional application information by going to the following link: https://www.wtamu.edu/academics/college-education-social-sciences/department-education/programs/edd/Admissions-Information/index.html.

Master’s Degree Programs

The Department of Education has seven options for a master’s degree. Passing a state test is required to earn a standard professional certificate. To ensure quality, master’s degree certificate programs are accredited by the Texas Education Agency/State Board for Educator Certification. Educator standards are set by the state of Texas and are subject to change.

Admission Requirements for Master’s Degree Programs

Prerequisite for all master’s degree programs, except professional counseling and instructional technology, is 18 semester credit hours of education. In addition, all programs require a minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 on all course work attempted or a 2.75 on the last 60 hours attempted for educator preparation program admission. Before beginning work toward the standard professional certificate, the student may be required to hold a valid classroom teaching certificate (see individual program requirements).

Curriculum/Certification Requirements

The specific degree program requirements are outlined in the Degree and Program Offerings  section of the Graduate Catalog.

If seeking a standard professional certificate, the student must complete the appropriate graduate program, meet the program requirements for teaching experience, pass the program comprehensive exam, and pass the appropriate state certification test (if seeking certification). The Master of Education degree must be completed within six years.

The professional certificate gives the holder legal authority to perform duties in public schools of Texas in the area designated on the face of the certificate.

Alternative Certification

A person who possesses at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and meets other specific qualifications may complete initial Texas teacher certification and gain course work to apply toward the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree.
