Survey of the contemporary world in historical and cultural context, focusing on events of the twentieth century and emphasizing the distinctive character of the societies under investigation. The course traces the decline of empires, the rise of the nation-state, the world wars, the struggle for independence, the Cold War, and globalization. Themes include comparative government, social, and economic systems, cultural geography, comparative religion and philosophy, women and gender, current events, popular culture, and the arts.
