HIST 3319 - The Llano Estacado and Near Southwest

The Llano Estacado and Near Southwest will examine indigenous Native American cultures that existed in the region including the Apache, Comanche and other groups. The course will also examine the establishment of Spanish outposts and villages in Northern New Mexico, Pueblo Indian culture and the pivotal role played by the Comanche after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, as well as the connections forged between the region and Northern New Mexico based upon travels by Ciboleros, Comancheros, and Pastores well into the 19th century. The course will also examine the region’s geographical features, flora and fauna, the advent of mega-ranching and railroad construction, land promotion and town building to 1910. Spring
