Post-M.S.N. Certificate Program for Nurse Educator

A 15-hour plan of graduate study leading to completion of a post-graduate certificate program that will increase the number of nurse educators and will lay the foundation for national certification as a nurse educator.

The primary aim of the Family Nurse Practitioner role specialization option at WTAMU is to prepare nurses for primary care in underserved areas and to improve access to primary healthcare for all. The post-master’s program is designed as a certificate course of study that enables a practicing nurse who holds a Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree to prepare for credentialing as and FNP. Upon completion of the prescribed course of study, the student’s transcript indicates that he/she has completed the education preparation as regulated by the Texas Board of Nursing. The student is then eligible to take a national FNP certification exam.

Pre-requisite to admission

Master’s degree in nursing.
Completed graduate level coursework in Pathophysiology, Pharmacotherapeutics, and Advanced Physical Assessment with a grade of “B” or higher. A student who has one or more of the pre-requisite courses on his/her M.S.N. transcript may receive credit toward the FNP requirements if those courses have been taken within five years of enrollment in the post-Master’s course of study and if they correspond to the WTAMU course descriptions.

3 hour elective (5000 or 6000 level) to support teaching role.
