Major in Communication Disorders


(Major Code: 240)

The American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), in order to certify and provide professional speech and hearing services, requires a master’s degree in communication disorders. WTAMU’s Communication Disorders Program is nationally accredited through ASHA by the CAA.

University Core Curriculum Requirements (42 hours)

Core 40 - Language, Philosophy and Culture (3 hours)

Core 70 - Government / Political Science (6 hours)

Core 80 - Social and Behavioral Sciences (3 hours)

Core 90 - Component Area Option (6 hours or fewer; may depend on major requirements)

Major-Specific University Core Requirements


**IMPORTANT: The following courses are required for their specific Core areas instead of the courses listed above in the general University Core Curriculum.**

Core 80 - Social and Behavioral Sciences (3 hours)


Core 90 - Component Area Option (3-5 of 6 hours)


The remaining 1-3 required hours for Core 90 may be satisfied by any additional course from the full list of Core 90 options.

Electives (8 hours)


Total hours required to complete degree: 120 hours


A student must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours to include at least 36 advanced hours.

Observation Requirements for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)


  •  Total of 25 hours.

Communication Disorders Honors Requirements


Admission Requirements for Communication Disorders


Admission to the undergraduate Communication Disorders Program is selective and competitive. Preference is given to WTAMU pre-communication disorders students. Applications are due by April 1 for admission into the following fall CD classes. One class is admitted each year and will be capped at 40 students. Student acceptance will be confirmed by June 15. Prerequisite: CD admission course includes CD 2373 .

Minimum admission criteria include:

  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Completion of CD 2373  with a minimum grade of “B”.
  • Complete application.
  • Meet the criteria of minimal technical standards.

The completed application and an official copy of all college transcripts (except WTAMU students) must be returned prior to April 1 for consideration. Return all items to:

Applicants are accepted for admission by ranked order using the formula listed below.

  • Academic performance - cumulative GPA and prerequisite GPA: 50%
  • Application and committee review: 50%
  • Total: 100%

Full acceptance - A student may be accepted to the CD program upon completion of all stated WTAMU CD program admission requirements without any deficiencies.

Applicants not selected may reapply for admission the following year.
