Admission Requirements
To be accepted into the MSE program, students must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Following admission, each student will have an individualized plan of study (due at the end of the first semester.) This plan of study will be developed in consultation with and approved by the student’s graduate advisory committee. Advising for students that possess a bachelor’s degree in a field other than engineering, physics, mathematics, or computer science will be done on a case by case basis.
Admission Deadlines
All application materials must be received by August 1st to be considered for fall admission and December 1st to be considered for spring admission.
Application Process
- Apply through the Graduate School using their application page.
- Submit payment of the $40 graduate admissions fee through the above page.
- Submit all university transcripts. All students must submit official copies of transcripts before admission.
- Submit a letter of intent describing your interest in engineering and what you hope to get out of this program. There is no particular format for this letter. The Graduate School Admission Committee (GSAC) would like to get a feel for your interest in engineering, experience level, and expectations for this degree program. Please email letters to graduateschool@wtamu.edu.
- Once all application materials have been received, you will be contacted by the Associate Dean of ECM in charge of Graduate Programs to set up an advising appointment.
Leveling Coursework
Leveling coursework may be required for students admitted without an undergraduate degree in engineering equivalent to the bachelor’s degree requirements in engineering at WTAMU or for students admitted with an undergraduate engineering degree that differs from the intended area of graduate study. Students will speak with an advisor prior to enrollment in the graduate program to determine what leveling coursework may be necessary.
Thesis Option (30 hours)
Twenty-four (24) semester hours of approved courses and six (6) additional hours of thesis research credit, a successful defense of a research thesis, national or international presentation of work, and publication in proceedings are required to complete this option.
Area of Specialization (15 hours)
Take fifteen hours from one of the following areas (5000-level or above): Mechanical Engineering (MENG), Civil Engineering (CENG), Environmental Engineering (EVEG), Electrical Engineering (EENG), or multidisciplinary (by advisement).
Environmental Engineering
Sub-Specialization (6 hours)
Take six hours from a second area of specialization: MENG, CENG, EVEG, EENG, or multi-disciplinary (by advisement).
Elective (3 hours)
Take any subject code by advisement.
Further requirements:
Other STEM (MATH, CHEM, PHYS, etc.) can be substituted as advised by Engineering Graduate Advisory Committee (EGAC) or thesis committee, but a minimum of 18 total hours of the degree must be engineering.
Non-Thesis Option (36 hours)
The non-thesis (project) option requires a minimum of thirty-six (36) semester hours of course work including a three-credit hour project course. The project course incorporates a written report and oral presentation to the Engineering Graduate Advisory Committee (EGAC). Additional course work may be necessary for students lacking the proper course prerequisites or as required by the EGAC and specified in an approved plan of study. The 36-hour program will facilitate students who want post-graduate study as a requirement for professional certification.
Area of Specialization (15 hours)
Take fifteen hours from one of the following areas (5000-level or above): Mechanical Engineering (MENG), Civil Engineering (CENG), Environmental Engineering (EVEG), Electrical Engineering (EENG), or multi-disciplinary (by advisement).
Environmental Engineering
Sub-Specialization (12 hours)
Take twelve hours from a second area of specialization: MENG, CENG, EVEG, EENG, or multi-disciplinary (by advisement).
Electives (6 hours)
Take six hours of electives at the 5000-level or above by advisement.
Non-Thesis Project (3 hours)
Further requirements:

Non-Thesis Option with Emphasis on Leadership and Management (36 hours)
The non-thesis option with emphasis on leadership and management requires thirty-six (36) credit hours of course work including a three-hour project course. The project course incorporates a written report and oral presentation to the Engineering Graduate Advisory Committee (EGAC). Additional course work may be necessary for students lacking the proper course prerequisites or as required by the EGAC and specified in an approved plan of study. The 36-hour program will facilitate students who want to focus post-graduate study on leadership and management within an engineering context.

Comprehensive Exam
All students must pass the comprehensive exam for their respective programs (thesis and non-thesis options) in order to earn a graduate degree.
NOTE: The comprehensive exam is not a course the student needs to enroll in. The requirement is listed merely as a reminder to the student.
