Curriculum and Instruction Option (36 hours)
(Major Code: 5455)
Admission Requirements:
A candidate must:
- Meet University Graduate School admission requirements;
- Have 2.75 undergraduate grade point average;
- Have taken at least 18 hours of education courses.
Required courses (9 hours);
Required Education Graduate Core Courses (9 hours):
Degree Requirements:
The student and an advisor plan a curriculum of 36 hours, of which 24 hours will be in courses numbered 6000 or above. A minimum of 6 hours and maximum of 18 hours must be in a field(s) other than education.
Comprehensive Examination
In addition, graduate curriculum and instruction students are required to pass a comprehensive examination during or after their last semester of taking courses. Reading Education Option (36 hours)
Standard Professional Certification Major Code 5455 Admission Requirements:
A candidate must:
- Meet University Graduate School admission requirements;
- Have a 2.75 undergraduate grade point average;
- Submit 2 letters of recommendation, resume, and transcripts;
- Submit a personal letter with biographical information and a discussion of career goals; and
- Submit a writing sample of a conceptual paper from any course taken or a philosophy of education paper (1-2 pages single-spaced).

Electives (3-6 hours)
Three to six hours of graduate level elective courses approved by an adviser are required.
- Candidates seeking reading specialist certification have three hours of electives due to the requirement of the practicum course (EDRD 6399 ).
- Candidates seeking the degree without certification take six hours of electives.
- Up to six credit hours earned through the WTAMU Route 66 Writing Project can be used as electives.
Competency-Based Credit
Six competency-based student credit hours may be accepted from an accredited International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) program. The IMSLEC courses will be accepted for:
To confirm evidence of learning, a candidate seeking competency-based credit will:
- Provide documentation that graduate level training from an IMSLEC accredited program has been successfully completed.
- Score 80% or higher on a WTAMU competency-based exam which will assess the candidate’s knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, comprehension, and the candidate’s understanding of explicit, systematic, sequential, and multisensory instructional strategies.
All requests for competency-based credit must be approved through a Department of Education Competency Credit Faculty Review committee.
Comprehensive Examination
In addition, all graduate reading candidates are required to pass a comprehensive examination during or after their last semester of taking courses.
Reading Specialist Certification
Candidates seeking a Texas Reading Specialist Certification must hold a valid Texas teaching certificate and will be assessed a site supervision fee of $400 plus mileage (i.e., the total miles a supervisor must travel to supervise a candidate). Candidates graduate with a M.Ed. degree upon completion of all degree requirements; however, a state test is required for reading specialist certification.
Special Education Option (36 hours)
Major Code 5455 Admission Requirements:
A candidate must:
- Hold a standard classroom teaching certificate;
- Complete a formal application and mandatory interview;
- Meet University Graduate School admission requirements; and
- Have a 2.75 undergraduate grade point average.
Leveling Courses
Students who do not have a special education background at the undergraduate level are required to take 3 semester hours of the following leveling courses in addition to 36 semester hours of required special education courses to fulfill course work requirements of the M.Ed. in special education.
