Social Work B.A./B.S.

The Social Work Program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The principal educational objective of the program is to prepare students for employment as beginning, entry-level generalist practitioners. Preparation of students for graduate education is a secondary objective. Social work majors are urged to consult closely with program advisers to assure proper sequencing of courses and in selection of appropriate electives. Students are considered to be pre-major prior to completing the formal application for acceptance into the social work program.

University Core Curriculum Requirements

From Life and Physical Sciences - Code 30 (6 hours)


Take six hours from the following biology courses.

From Social and Behavioral Sciences - Code 80 (3 hours)


From Component Area Option - Code 90 (2 of 6 hours)


  • Fourth (lab) hours from Code 30

Required Courses from Other Areas


Take whichever course was not taken for University core (Code 80).

B.A. or B.S. Requirements (6-12 hours)

Prerequisite for Advanced Work


Admission to the Social Work Program is a prerequisite for admission into SOCW 4310 , SOCW 4341 , and SOCW 4383 , SOCW 4688  and SOCW 4698 . See individual course descriptions for additional prerequisites.

Criteria for Admission into the Social Work Program


All students registering as social work majors will be considered pre-majors (Major Code: 151) before they are officially admitted into the Social Work Program. Criteria for admission into the Social Work Program are*:

  1. Completion of the University’s core curriculum courses, including BIOL.
  2. Completion of the beginning-level social work courses: SOCW 2361 , SOCW 2315  and SOCW 3301 . A student must have earned a grade of “C” or better in all courses required for the major.
  3. An overall cumulative grade point of 2.50 or higher.
  4. An application for admission to the Social Work Program accompanied by (1) at least two letters of reference from people who can attest to the student’s desire and commitment to helping people, (2) the student’s latest transcripts and (3) a copy of the student’s degree plan. 
  5. Once students are officially admitted into the Social Work Program, the BSW Program Director of the student’s advisor will complete a Change of Major/Advisor Form, changing the major code to 152.

*Exceptions to these criteria will be considered on an individual basis. A letter explaining the request must be submitted with the program application to be considered by the program committee.
