University Core Curriculum Requirements


Refer to the “University Core Curriculum ” section of this catalog.

Note:


Music majors cannot receive core credit for MUSI 1306 . MUSI 1208  and MUSI 1209  satisfies “Creative Arts” in the core curriculum.

A maximum of 80 hours of music (MUSI), music ensemble (MUEN) and applied music (MUAP) courses can be applied to a bachelor’s degree in music. A minimum of 40 semester hours must be taken outside the school.

Music Emphases


Performance (Major Code: 202): Instrumental, Keyboard, Piano Pedagogy, or Voice


Required Music Courses for Instrumental Performance Emphasis

MUAP 10XX (two credit hours for each of four semesters)

MUAP 30XX (three credit hours for each of four semesters)

Required Music Courses for Keyboard Performance Emphasis

Applied minor instrument MUAP 10XX (one credit hour for each of four semesters).

Applied minor instrument MUAP 30XX (one credit hour for each of two semesters).

Required Music Courses for Piano Performance with Piano Pedagogy Emphasis

Applied minor instrument MUAP 10XX (one credit hour for each of four semesters)

Applied minor instrument MUAP 30XX (one credit hour for each of two semesters)

Six semester hours major ensemble (See “other requirements” below)

Eight semester hours of music electives

Organ Option: After four semesters of secondary instruction at the 1000 level, students in the degree programs Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in piano performance and B.M. in piano performance with emphasis in piano pedagogy will have the option of registering for two semesters of organ at the 1000 level.

Other Requirements

  • A minimum of eight semesters of major ensemble are required; enrollment in major ensemble is required in every semester for which the student is enrolled in 9 or more hours.
  • Recital, concert weekly seminar and departmental meeting attendance.
  • Satisfactory senior recital performance before graduation.
  • Elective non-music hours to meet minimum requirement of 40 hours outside major.

All-Level Certification (Major Code: 452): Instrumental, Keyboard, or Vocal Emphasis


MUAP 10XX (two credit hours for each of four semesters


MUAP 30XX (two credit hours for each of two semesters)


Four semester hours major ensemble (See “other requirements” below)


Four one-hour enrollments in:

  • MUAP 1081 - Applied Music - Voice
Two hours music electives

Other Requirements for all emphases


  • A minimum of seven semesters of major ensemble are required; enrollment in major ensemble is required in every semester for which the student is enrolled in 9 or more hours.
  • Recital, concert weekly seminar and departmental meeting attendance.
  • Satisfactory senior recital performance or capstone project before graduation.
  • Requirements for piano must be completed before the semester of student teaching.

 

 

NOTE:

  • Students majoring in music (all-level certification) are encouraged to attend at least one summer school session to allow greater freedom during regular semesters to participate in unrequired but valuable courses, such as small ensembles.

Eight semester hours structured electives in music


being sure to complete the 39 hours of required 3000- to 4000-level course work, of which one course must be taken from each group:

MUAP 10XX (two credit hours for each of four semesters)

Six semester hours of major ensemble credit


Two semester hours of:


  and    or MUAP 1069  (one credit hour each semester). Two semesters of piano with a grade of “C” or higher are required for graduation.

Other Requirements for Elective Studies in Music Industry


  • A minimum of eight semesters of major ensemble are required; enrollment in major ensemble is required in ever semester for which the student is enrolled in 9 or more hours.
  • Recital, concert, weekly seminar and departmental meeting attendance.
  • Capstone project before graduation: students in Option One may do a senior recital or senior portfolio project; students in Option Two will produce an audio and/or video project.
