(Major Code: 5457)
School Counselor Standard Professional Certificate
General Requirements
Formal admission to the counselor education program requires:
- Complete application and interview for the counseling program.
- Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher in the last 60 hours of course work.
- Teacher certification, with one year of classroom teaching experience is highly preferred, but applicants will need to have an affiliation with a school in order to complete practicum requirements. Students who are unable to set up a practicum in K-12 settings (public or private) will not be permitted to advance in the program.
Before beginning work toward the standard professional certificate, the student must hold the appropriate standard/provisional certificate. Students entering this program must meet approval by the Counselor Admissions Committee. Before receiving the standard professional certificate, the student must complete the proper graduate program, have two years of teaching experience and pass the appropriate state test.
Note:
Certification as a school counselor by the State of Texas requires two years of teaching experience.
A candidate who is hired by a school district and requests recommendation for internship on a probationary certificate will be assessed an annual fee of $300 plus mileage (i.e., the total miles a supervisor must travel to supervise interns) to offset the expense of supervision required by the Texas Administrative Code.
