Formal admittance to the counselor education program requires:
- Complete application and interview for the counseling program.
- Three letters of recommendation with at least one from a previous supervisor familiar with your work.
- Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher in the last 60 hours of course work.
Note:
Students wishing to provide supervision after licensure are required to take COUN 6382.
After completing the 48-semester-hour program, students must apply for a temporary license which is needed prior to beginning the required 3,000-clock-hour internship under approved supervision.
Marriage and Family Emphasis
Note:
The marriage and family emphasis meets academic requirements set by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists.
NOTE:
Licensure as a Professional Counselor by the State of Texas, according to the Texas Administrative Code Title 22, Part 30, Section 681, requires the candidate to hold a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling or a counseling related field from an accredited college or university meeting the academic requirements; as part of the graduate program, a supervised practicum experience that is primarily counseling in nature; after the graduate degree, an applicant must take and pass the National Counselor Exam and the Texas Jurisprudence Exam; after receiving temporary LPC licensure, applicant must complete a 3,000 clock-hour (1,500 direct client contact) under the supervision of a board-approved supervisor.
