Admission requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (with an overall GPA of 2.75 or a 2.75 on the last 60 hours attempted at a regionally accredited institution of higher education)
- Valid teaching certificate or proof of pending teacher certification
- Meet all Graduate School requirements
- Complete application screening process, including:
- Review of past academic performance
- Professional employment evaluations (as applicable)
- Professional resume
- Two letters of recommendation
- Service record
- Additional program documents provided online at www.wtamu.edu/edleadership
- Transcript Evaluation form
- Ethics form
Education Graduate Core Requirements (nine hours):
Required Educational Leadership Courses (27 hours)
Field experiences, clinical teaching, practicums, and internships required for Texas certification must be completed in a school accredited by the Texas Education Agency and approved by WTAMU. A non-certification option that does not require field experiences, clinical teaching, practicums, and internships is available for students whose residency is outside the state of Texas.
Note:
Students must take EDLD 6312 just prior to EDLD 6399 . EDLD 6399 is taken in the last semester (after passing principal TExES). Students graduate with a M.Ed. degree upon completion of 36 semester hours (including completion of master’s comprehensive exam). See notes on degree plan at www.wtamu.edu/edleadership. Two years of creditable teaching experience as a classroom teacher and a TExES test is required for certification.
Requirements for Principal Certification only
(Major Code: 5475)
- Master’s degree
- Valid teaching certificate
- Two years of creditable teaching experience as a classroom teacher
- TExES test is required for certification
For a total of 30 semester hours:
Requirements for Superintendent Certification only
(Major Code: 5476)
- Master’s degree
- Principal certification (must be held prior to completion of superintendent certification).
- TExES test is required for certification
For a total of 15 semester hours:
Probationary Certificate Requirements
Each of the following credentials is valid for one year and is renewable for two additional calendar years, if necessary. The student must complete the full certification program requirements within a 10-year period from the date of the first course taken.
Principal
- Master’s degree and valid teaching certificate
- Two years of classroom teaching experience
- Completion of 12 hours in educational leadership courses. A minimum of two courses in educational leadership must have been completed at WTAMU
- Completion of admission requirements for the educational leadership program
- Serve in a supervised internship
- Provide a copy of employment contract for administrative position
Superintendent
- Master’s degree and Standard Principal Certificate
- Completion of admission requirements for the professional superintendent program
- Serve in a supervised internship
- Provide a copy of employment contract for administrative position
