Music Therapy: Instrumental, Keyboard, or Vocal Emphasis (Music B.M.)

Students competing this degree program will be prepared to enter music therapy profession. Following all course work and a six-month internship, students are eligible for professional membership with the American Music Therapy Association. Students also are eligible to take a national certification exam. Upon successful completion of this exam, students will receive board certification (MT-BC).

Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Degree


Major in Music Therapy

Students completing this degree program will be prepared to enter music therapy profession. Music therapy professional sequence


 Students must receive approval from the director of music therapy before entering the music therapy professional sequence. Students may apply for acceptance into the sequence during the first month of the first semester of the sophomore year (third semester at WTAMU). Complete applications will be reviewed only twice per year. For admission requirements and application procedures, see the director of music therapy.

one 3-hour elective course in behavioral sciences

Other Requirements for all Emphases from Other Departments


  • A minimum of eight semester of major ensemble are required; enrollment in major ensemble is required in every semester for which the student is enrolled in 9 or more hours.
  • Recital, concert, weekly seminar and departmental meeting attendance.
  • Capstone recital project before graduation: This recital may feature the student’s major instrument, music therapy demonstration or a combination of these. If a music therapy demonstration is included, it must involve performances on the student’s major instrument plus another instrument.

 

Internship


Students must satisfactorily (which means a grade of “C” or better in 

 ) complete a six-month internship with an approved institution prior to being awarded the degree.
