Major in Computer Science


(Major Code: 307)

The computer science curriculum is designed to provide the student with significant exposure to the theory, abstraction and design components of the field of computer science.

Program Outcomes


Students completing this curriculum will be able to demonstrate:

  1. A system-level perspective;
  2. An appreciation of the interplay between theory and practice;
  3. Familiarity with common themes of computer science such as abstraction, complexity and evolutionary change; and
  4. Adaptability to the enormous pace of change in computing.

Students will have significant project experience.

A student must complete a minimum of 121 semester credit hours to include at least 39 advanced hours.

Core Curriculum Elections for Computer Science Majors


From Mathematics - Code 20 (3 hours)

Fourth hour will count toward Component Area Option.

From Life and Physical Sciences - Code 30 (6 hours)

Lab hours will count toward Component Area Option.

Note:

 Students selecting the mechanical engineering track must select PHYS 2425  and PHYS 2426 .

From Component Area Option - Code 90 (6 hours)

  • ENGL 2311  
  • Other 3 hours completed with core lab hours and extra hour from MATH 2413  

Mechanical Engineering Track


(This meets requirements for a minor in mechanical engineering.)

Nine hours advanced MENG


Note:


A grade of “C” or better is required for all prerequisites listed for ECS courses required for CS majors.

Minor in Computer Science


Students selecting a minor in computer science should complete CS 2321 , CS 1337 , and CS 2336  before attempting advanced courses. Requirements for a minor are specified elsewhere in the catalog.
