Educational Leadership M.Ed.

Major in Educational Leadership with or without certification


(Major Code: 5454)

Admission requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree (with an overall GPA of 2.75 or a 2.75 on the last 60 hours attempted at a regionally accredited institution of higher education)

  • Valid teaching certificate or proof of pending teacher certification

  • Meet all Graduate School requirements

  • Complete application screening process, including:

    • Review of past academic performance

    • Professional employment evaluations (as applicable)

    • Professional resume

    • Two letters of recommendation

    • Service record

  • Additional program documents provided online at www.wtamu.edu/edleadership

    • Transcript Evaluation form

    • Ethics form

Required Educational Leadership Courses (27 hours)


Field experiences, clinical teaching, practicums, and internships required for Texas certification must be completed in a school accredited by the Texas Education Agency and approved by WTAMU. A non-certification option that does not require field experiences, clinical teaching, practicums, and internships is available for students whose residency is outside the state of Texas.

Note:


Candidates must complete three sections of EDLD 6299 consecutively during the last three semesters of enrollment that must include a fall, spring, and summer section in any order. Candidates graduate with a M.Ed. degree upon completion of 36 semester credit hours of required course work and successful completion of the master’s comprehensive exam taken during or after the last semester of enrollment. Two years of creditable teaching experience and successful completion of the principal TExES is required for Texas Certification.

Requirements for Principal Certification

  • Master’s degree and valid teaching certificate
  • Two years of creditable teaching experience
  • Completion of admission requirements for the educational leadership/principal certification program
  • Completion of 30 semester credit hours of prescribed educational leadership courses
  • Successful completion of the principal TExES is required for Texas certification

Requirements for Superintendent Certification only


(Major Code: 5476)

  • Master’s degree and valid teaching certificate
  • Principal certification (must be held prior to completion of superintendent certification program)
  • Completion of admission requirements for the educational leadership/superintendent certification program
  • Completion of 15 semester credit hours of prescribed educational leadership courses
  • Successful completion of the superintendent TExES is required for Texas certification

Educational Leadership Practicum and Internship Supervision (Principal and Superintendent)


Candidates will be assessed a one-time program fee of $400 plus mileage (i.e., the total miles a supervisor must travel to supervise interns) per probationary certificate and/or during the practicum (EDLD 6299 for principal certification and EDLD 7313, EDLD 7320, or EDLD 7322 for superintendent certification) to offset the expense of supervision required by 19 TAC §228.35(h), 19 TAC §241.10(b), and 19 TAC §242.10(b).

Probationary Certificate Requirements


Each of the following credentials is valid for one year and is renewable for two additional calendar years, if necessary.

Principal


  • Master’s degree and valid teaching certificate
  • Two years of creditable teaching experience
  • Completion of admission requirements for the educational leadership program
  • Completion of 30 semester credit hours of prescribed educational leadership courses
  • Provide a copy of employment contract for administrative position
  • Serve in a supervised internship

Superintendent


  • Master’s degree and principal certificate
  • Completion of admission requirements for the professional superintendent program
  • Completion of 15 semester credit hours of prescribed educational leadership courses
  • Provide a copy of employment contract for administrative position
  • Serve in a supervised internship
