Music Core Requirements


 Private study of piano, voice, organ, string, brass, woodwind, percussion instruments, composition and conducting is available to all students of the University on both beginning and advanced levels of instruction. The fee is $30 per semester (for one credit hour) for a half-hour lesson each week or $60 per semester (for two or three credit hours) for an hour lesson each week. (Exception: The fee for voice lessons for two or three credit hours is $260 per semester.)

NOTE: Only 80 hours of music (MUSI), music ensemble (MUEN) and applied music (MUAP) courses can be applied to a bachelor’s degree in music. All other course work must be taken outside the school.

Requirements for Composition Emphasis


Six semester hours of major ensemble. A minimum of three semesters of lower-division, and the remaining semesters must be upper-division.


MUAP 3087 (two credit hours for each of two semesters) in composition


MUAP 1087 (two credit hours for each of four semesters) in composition


MUAP 30XX (two credit hours for each of two semesters) in performance medium


MUAP 10XX (two credit hours for each of four semesters) in performance medium


Other Requirements


  •  A minimum of eight semester of major ensemble are required; enrollment in major ensemble is required in every semester for which the student is enrolled in 9 or more hours.
  • Recital, concert, weekly seminar and departmental meeting attendance.
  • Capstone recital project before graduation: This recital will feature the student’s composition portfolio performed by the composer and/or other soloists or ensembles.
  • Effective non-music hours to meet minimum requirement of 40 hours outside major.
