The Department of Sports and Exercise Sciences offers courses meeting West Texas A&M University certification of physical education teachers for public schools in Texas, and preparation of students in sports and exercise sciences. The department is housed in the Virgil Henson Activities Center, a multi-purpose building which provides outstanding facilities for various programs the department offers. Specialized departmental facilities include state-of-the-art athletic training, biomechanics, and human performance laboratories.

Classes offered by the department are designed to create interest and develop skills in lifelong sports and to enable persons to use leisure time to benefit physical and mental health. Emphasis is placed on both individual and small-group recreational sports with portions of each class devoted to understanding the relationship of personal physical fitness to lifetime participation in vigorous activity.

The Department of Sports and Exercise Sciences prepares students for careers in Athletic Training, Exercise Sciences, Applied Sport and Teaching/Coaching. Athletic Trainers are prepared to pursue employment in the traditional, clinical, or emerging practices setting. Exercise Science students are prepared with foundational knowledge and skills for employment in a variety of rehabilitation and sport performance settings; curriculum can also lead to a graduate program in biomechanics, exercise physiology, medicine, occupational therapy, physical therapy, chiropractice, and many others. Applied Sport students are prepared for employment opportunities in a wide variety of sport fields, physical activity/wellness settings in the community, corporate, health related, therapeutic domains and coaching. A program leading to teacher certification is available in all-level physical education, plus a second teaching content area.
